Bell Aerospace's manufaturing
plant is located on the former air
force base property, two miles
south-east of Grand Bend.
Under a similar FAIT
program, Bell developed and
built two of the larger, 40-
gross-ton. Voyageur ACVs. The
second of these is now owned by
the Canadian. Ministry of
Transport and is being operated
on Lake Ontario by Northern
Transportation Co. Ltd„ Ottawa.
The first - which was used. in
extensive tests to prove the
Voyageur concept - is un-
dergoing modification and ad-
ditional testing.
Gisel said work has begun
toward production of additional
Voyageurs beginning in 1973.
The Viking will have the same
ruggedness and flat cargo deck
configuration as Voyageur. And
it will be composed of six bolt-
together modules, similar to the
Voyageur which has 11 modules
designed for ease in disassembly
and transportation. Aluminum
hull modules for Voyageur and
Viking are manufactured for Bell
by Fleet Manufacturing Co, of
Fort Erie.
Viking will be powered by one
Twin-Pac T75 marine gas turbine
engine with 1,3 0 0 shaft
horsepower. This unit built by
United Aircraft of Canada, will
be coupled to two variable-pitch
propellers through a V-drive
transmission. This transmission
will be developed for Bell by Spar
Aerospace Products Ltd. of
Toronto. The engine will also
turn a fan providing lift for the
vehicle. Many of the mechanical
and structural items will be iden-
tical to those used on the
Voyageur.
Twin propellers will provide
more thrust and better control
than the single propeller used in
earlier generations of small
ACVs. Also, since the Twin-Pac
is actually two engines, the craft
will be able to operate with one
engine out,
Also adding to the controllabili-
ty of Viking will be "puff port"
openings on the port and star-
board sides of the bow just above
the flexible trunk. These ports
can be opened or closed to allow
cushion air to escape, providing
thrust for directional control.
Various studies have shown a
need for a special-purpose craft
the size of Viking which will
complement fleets of heavy-haul
Voyageurs, The potential Cana-
dian and export market includes:
-Federal agencies, especially
coast guard units which have a
need for fast, amphibious craft
for search and rescue and for
aids-to-navigation monitoring
duties.
Plans have been announced for
development of a new air cushion
vehicle - the Viking -and for
manufacture of additional.
Voyageur .multi-purpose Air
etishiOn vehicles,
William G. Gisel, president of
Bell Aerospace Canada, Division
of Textron Canada Ltd., said
work has started on the design of
Viking, which will gross 15 tons
and be able to haul a 5-ton
payload on a 530-square-foot
deck,
Cost of the project is estimated
at $2-million. About half the
development of Viking Will be.
funded under a Program for Ad,
vancement of Industrial
Technology (FAIT) agreement
with the Canadian Department of
Industry, Trade and Commerce
(DOITC).
