SQUI RE When Blanche McNeil was growing up in Port Alma, Ontario, she prayed that she'd awaken one morning to discover that God had answered her prayers. "Dear God, I hate myself so! Why can't you turn me into a dainty, radiant, slender girl?" But even in Port Alma, on Highway 3, a little East of Wheatley, on Lake Erie, God doesn't answer that kind of supplication, at least directly! "Would you believe it? I weighed thirteen pounds at birth, What a headstart I had." Sparkling eyes and a wide, in- fectious smile visually testify her happy state of mind, She moves around the bright living room, trying to make me comfortable. Blanche settles her neat, slender figure into a chair so that I can begin the interview, To the first question, she throws up her hands. "I had the dullest, unhappiest teen-years imaginable! I'd never wish those years back again, High school in Chatham was my big interest. I took nurse's training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chatham and after graduation, hoped that life would become more exciting." Blanche dashes down the hall to her bedroom and returns with a pile of photographs, many of them battered from constant handling. "Here's a picture of me in my nurse's uniform," points out Blanche. It's difficult to believe this good-looking but obviously overweight girl is the same Cut cone-shaped pieces out of the tops of cupcakes. Place a dipper of vanilla ice cream on the cupcake and top with cone- shaped portion of cupcake placed upside-down at an angle, Cut each cherry into five strips. To Make Face: Arrange three chocolate pieces to designate eyes and nose, For mouth use a small sliver of cherry. Prepare as much orange beverage as you think necessary to quench the thirst of these little goblins. A black licorice twizzler completes the black and orange colour scheme, The kids will agree your easy-to-prepare tricks are just the greatest for Hallowe'en treats. Kilb, Vice-president, of Middlesex Presbyterial U,C.W. speaking at the "Celebration" service sponsored by the UCW told the congregation that "The Church is Alive, and Well . " She asked, "Why didn't God create a world where Love is a certainty?" and con- tinued "we can't help but wonder that some have said "God is Dead" when they looked at our non-commitment, our non-loving and our immaturity. The Church is alive wherever people are moving from despair to hope from complacency to action." The service was conducted by Program Convener, Mrs. Wm. Froats and President, Mrs. M. H. Hodgins. Mrs. David Park lead a hymn sing which opened the "Celebration" and Mrs. A. Jones • sang. "Let's say it's wise to do so," Blanche says, "Dieting is a 'serious business. Coming together to talk over one's ,,prablems has a beneficial effect, A member can lose or gain a pound, or just stay the same. The experience of the previous week can be shared with others. Talking out one's problems seems to be half the battle in losing weight." Blanche would like to write a book. While Ben drives the car to and from meetings, Blanche tapes anecdotes that come to mind. Blanche says, "Once a member's wishful thinking changes to actively wanting to lose weight, wonderful results will follow." Losing one hundred pounds changed the appearance and the lifestyle of the redhead from Port Alma and it can change yours too. insecurity... .a bid for attention, I suppose," Blanche concluded. Then she brightened, threw up her arms, and said, "I certainly managed to get his attention, and to hold it," "Ben's business took him to the United States for years. We had two children: a girl and then a boy. I worked in a doctor's office, still fat, still promising myself that I'd go on that miracle diet where I'd quickly see the fat melt off," "On January 15, 1909," con- tinued Blanche, "the want power that I had learned to pray for, finally came. I joined a class of would-be weight-losers, and from that day on, persevered through hell and heaven until my goal was reached. My goal was to lose 100 pounds!" To picture this bouncy, slender woman being smothered in 100 pounds of fat is a Herculean task. Nevertheless the photos on the table bore out the truth of her words, "How Ben ever put up with me through the nine months it took to lose the weight, proves that he is some man," says Blanche seriously. The McNeils always admired the City of London and just over two years ago, decided to move here. Blanche's intentions were to nurse again, but Ben could tell that her heart wasn't in the job. "I really wanted to help and work with people, but this time as an advisor to obese people. Overweight individuals can do wonders if they have the correct medical and nutritive advice, I have the knowledge to help them. "We started our organization on a shoestring in London, in July 1971. Every member of this family pitched in and helped to make it a success. There are now 17 branches to the organiztion, Blanche solemnly says, "That doesn't sound like many, does it?" Blanche McNeil is the founder and director of Weigh-Rite. Husband Ben designed the logo, a maple leaf superimposed with the letters W R. The organization's aim is to help obese men and women 'lose weight the right way'. Weigh-Kite's advertisements claim that it is not necessary to starve to, get thin. Diets are nutritionally sound and medically approved, because they follow the Canada Health Guide. Blanche will co-operate fully with a member's doctor, if required. Weigh-Rite's menus are not .only nutritious, but at- tractive sand satisfying. 'Want power' is the most im- portant nequisite to losing and maintaining weight. Joan Cunningham presided at the organ. Rev. R. A. Carson preached on the theme Christian nurture. He said the Church's interest in education goes back to Old Testament times when education was a lifelong process which began with small children, and continued till death. He said that Christian maturation involves a deep intellectual attitude. Three accidents in the area were investigated during the week by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police detachment at Lucan. No boy ever bothered with me, except to tease me." We move to the diningroom table, sip coffee and look at "before and after" pictures, She ruffles through the pile to find the one she wants. "Here I am with my Ben." "Who's Ben?" I ask and she says, "Ben's a darling. He's my husband and also my friend." A glorious combination, if you can get it! "One night I went to a party, unescorted naturally. Here was this wild, rough Irish McNeil from Chatham. I'd known him years before and how he had changed. Fat girl or not, we really clicked, He liked my sense of humour. All fat girls think they have to be clowns.
