MI of us, sooner or later, face
the reality of losing someone near
and dear to us. During the past
year, three people very close to
Me have died, one being my
mother.
Regardless of one's beliefs,
death is very final and absolute
as the beacon light of life sud-
denly goes out leaving no
shining pathway to guide the
living, loving relationship.
Instantaniously , there is only
darkness where once there was
light and warmth and cheer,
First of all one is numb to the
shock and scarcely can take in
the loss that has befallen. But
finally, comes the cold, savage
realization that the person is gone

soul comforting promise,
While at the conference in
Jerusalem someone told the story
Of a ship going out to sea, The
people on shore sadly watched
her fading in the distance and as
she finally dipped below the
horizon their hearts were
wrenched as they sobbed, "Look,
she's gone."
Meanwhile on a different shore
beyond their sight another group
looked out to sea and as the ship
rose above the horizon line their
happy shouts filled the air,
"Look, she's coming in," A lovely
analogy of death, I think.
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale
says much depends on your point
of view on how you handle the
loss of a loved one, You can think
of death as a dark door, or a dark
valley or you can think of it as
a rainbow bridge stretching
between two marvelous worlds, a
bridge which all our departed
loved ones have crossed and
which we too will cross one day to
be reunited with them.
After my mother's death we
found a piece of verse pasted in
the front of her Bible. It brought a
marvellous comfort to our family
and may also bring solace to you.
"No funeral gloom, my dears,
when I am gone;
Corpse-gazing, tears, black
raiment, graveyard grim-
ness.
Think of me as withdrawn into
the dimness,
Yours still, you mine, Remember
all the best
Of our past moments, and forget
the rest;
And so, to where I wait, come
gently on."

really gone. No longer is he or
she there to give advice, show
concern and love, share a joke, or
exchange the chit-chat of the day
over a cup of coffee.
For weeks, months perhaps,
you experience times when you
forget this loved one is no longer
within the range of earthly
communication. You read an
article, hear an interesting story
and automatically say, "Jack
would enjoy that . . must
remember tell him," Or you face
a stickly problem and think,
"Well, I'll ask Mother about
that" .,,for even in her frailty
there was still a strength that
came from her wisdom and
knowledge. Then the lonely tide
of comprenshion washes over you
and you know it's not possible to
do these things anymore,
I'm thankful, that as a
Christian, I believe in the
goodness of God and in the
promises of immortality He's
given us. Jesus said, "I am the
resurrection and the life . . ,"
Surely one of the greatest
statements ever made for it
means that life here on earth is
not the end but only the begin-
ning.
This summer I visited the little
town of Bethany which is nestled
in the hills a few miles from
Jerusalem. Here Jesus' friends,
Lazarus, Mary and Martha, lived
and here one still finds the tomb
in which Lazarus is said to have
been buried before Jesus raised
him from the dead,
I decended the two dozen steps
into the small chamber far down
in the earth and hewn out of solid
rock, It was dark, cold, and
clammy. As I came back out into
the glorious sunshine I was
almost overcome by the in-
tangible, unexplainable,
beautiful conviction that "he that
believeth in me, though he were
dead, yet shall he live." What a

missionary has a different
meaning to-day. Comparing her
work,today'smissionary is more
of a co-worker and one is invited
to the country instead of being
sent as an engineer or agriculture
worker or home training per-
sonnel.
In the Congo where she worked
they were never allowed to teach
English, now they do. She finds
the U.C.W.doesn'twant to study
missions anymore, She feels
parents are selfish in not letting
their teenagers\ be interested in
missionary work; they never
think of a church calling. The
African is aware of the outside
world and not impressed by the
white man's wealth and bombs.
The new generation is growing
up and is better educated. The
study on Africa is just beginning.
Miss. Elizabeth Facey,
Stratford presented her
literature available. The study
for 1973 will be on India.
Greetings were brought by
Mrs. S. Shier president of Huron-
Perth Presbytery.

by Mrs. Parkinson who received
and accepted an invitation from
St. Mary's for the 1973 regional.
Mrs. Lorne Marshall will be the
new secretary replacing Mrs.
Harry Hern.
