The height of folly is to live poor so you can die rich, Inflation wouldn't be so bad if the prices didn't keep going up. up a new harvesting system. Livestock specialists will discuss building ventilation, systemic warble control or any other questions you may have, Crop specialists will be pleased to discuss the economics of corn production as compared to other cropping systems, both for the corn producer or anyone con- sidering corn production. William A. Stewart, Ontario minister of Agriculture and Food, turned the first sod at the site of the 1972 International Plowing Match on 0,C. Zehr's farm, Grants ready; bugs hit trefoil Farmers who grew wheat in 1970 and have not yet applied for payment of the Federal Government's $1.04 per bushel are .urged to get forms im- mediately from the Huron Agricultural Office as the ap- plications should be in by Sep- tember 30, 1972. Producers will receive a maximum payment based on 500 bushel, Crops from 1969 through 67 are eligible for a smaller percentage payment. Trefoil seed growers are ad- vised of a problem with the clover wasp which lays eggs in the seed of trefoil and tiny larvae develop inside rendering the seed useless. Growers can find out if their seed is affected by squeezing a number of ripe seeds. Infected seeds squash easily as only the seed coat remains. To date 30 percent of the seeds in Bruce County are infected so we urge trefoil growers to sample their fields. Warning on gas issued As farmers are now filling silos with green corn, the Farm Safety Council warns of possible silo gas accumulating one to three days after filling. If it is necessary to enter the silo, do so only after running the blower for one half hour to ventilate it. Most silo gases are heavier than air and may sink down the shaft and fill the barn or feed room with poison gas. Farmers are advised to keep feed room doors open and stables well ventilated to prevent loss of livestock or possible human life for the first few days following silo filling. Sebringville, laS.t week. Dates for this year's match, a highlight of the fall season, are September 26 to 30, moving the event up from the traditional October dates in hopes of an assist from the weatherman, In his opening remarks Mr. Stewart referred to the friendly competition of the plowing match and to the general competition in farming which, he said, is the greatestecompetitive industry in Canada today. He referred also, to the quality and neatness of farms in Perth County, hosts for the 1972 plowing match, The occasion game members of the press and exhibitors an op- portunity to view the site of the tented city which will cover some 100 acres of land. All the staking of lots was completed at that time. Before moving to the site the crowd of almost 200 people met for a briefing at the Sebringville Athletic Centre with Ellard Lange, RR 2, Tavistock, chair- man. Mr. Lange is general chairman of the Perth County local committee for the 1970 IPM, Mr. Lange then led a parade of cars driving the official sod- turning tractor owned by Wes Noack of Sebringville, to the site. Local committee members have spent more than a year planning for this year's match in Perth, assisted in arrangements by the Ontario Plowman's Association and the ministry of Agriculture and Food. Meanwhile, as last minute preparations are underway throughout Perth, Lambton County officials are already planning the 1973 match which will be held in their county. Confirmed cases of rabies in animals have increased markedly in Huron County, during the first fl months of 197e, Total confirmed cases, involving both domestic and wild animale were 52 for the period, representing an increase of approximately 50 percent over the same period in 1971, Undetected cases of rabies in an epidemicarea usually far exceeds confirmed incidents. The 52 positive animals were composed of the following species of animals: Fox, 16; Bovine, 16; Skunk, 13; swine, 4; dog, 1; cat, 1; bat, 1. The above figures indicate a relative low incidence in dogs and cats, which are considered to be animals which present a greater risk to our human population, During the past 6 years the Canada Department of Agriculture, Health of Animals Branch and the Huron County Health Unit have sponsored free Anti-Rabies Vaccination Clinins for dogs and cats, which at- tributes to the low incidence of rabies in these animals. It is gratifying to note that the residents of Huron County are taking more advantage of these clinics, as can be seen by the following statistics; Year Dogs Cats Total 1966 1,957 673 2,630 1967 1,768 780 2,548 1968 2,711 1,201 3,912 1969 3,230 1,887 5,117 1970 3,423 1,955 5,378 1971 3,899 2,432 6,331 The sponsoring groups have therefore decided in view of the increased incidence of rabies, to again hold Anti-Rabies Vac- cination Clinics in 1972, These clinics will commence October 2, in the northern areas of the county and continue south- ward to completion on October 25;72. Please consult your local newspaper and radio station for clinic dates and times in your area, Rabies is a virus disease which affects the central nervous system of animals and humans. The symptoms produced by the disease vary from incident to incident, but, by and large, all animals behave in a peculiar manner and attempt to attack other animals and thus propagate the disease, as live virus is frequently present in the saliva of infected animals, The disease is usually fatal, unless proper evasive action is taken prior to the onset of symptoms of the disease. Rabies infection is mainly centered in southern areas of Ontario and Quebec, Total elimination of the condition is highly unlikely because of the residual constant infection in our wild life. Spread to our human population is therefore a constant and real threat, and for this reason control in our domestic animal population is one of the major concerns of the Canada Department of Agriculture, Health of Animals Branch, Rabies clinics in the southern part of Huron will begin at the 0 0 0 0 fire hall in Brucefield, Thursday morning, October 19 from 9 toll noon and in the afternoon will be at the Hayfield village hall in the afternoon from 1.30 to 4.30, Friday afternoon, October 20„ the Exeter arena will be the clinic site from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 23, the clinic moves to the Zurich Community Centre for a morning session from nine until noon and will be at the Hensall arena from 1.30 to 4,30. The next day it's to the Dash- wood fire hall in the morning from 9 to noon and in the af- ternoon, the Crediton fire hall from 1.30 to 4,30, Wednesday, October 25 com- pletes the clinic schedule in this area with a visit to the Usborne township building at Elimville in the morning and the Grand Bend fire hall in the afternoon.
