1, Amateur Radio
Electro-magnetism, A.C. & D.C. theory, inductance and
capacitance, measuring and test equipment,
transformers, tubes & transistor, code sending and
receiving, International regulations and operating
procedures, wave propagation, antennae assistance,
transmitters & receivers, station accessories, T.V.I.,
& B.C.I., diagrams, electronic circuits and analyses.
24. Fibre
This is a new course that will provide for both group and
individual projects. There is something to appeal to all
interests - weaving and spinning, embroidery,
basketry, braiding, carding weaving, dyeing (tie
dyeing, batik, etc.), patchwork, hairpin lace, crocheting,
knitting and rug making.

General Information
1) Classes are open to students who are 16 years of age or over and are not in
attendance at a day school. Day school students wishing tutorial help, enrichment
or program acceleration may apply for admission, Registrations by day school
students in academic credit courses must be accompanied by written endorsement
from the day school principal,
2) A minimum registration of 15 students is required for any class to begin for either
the first or second semesters.
3) If there is insufficient registration to hold classes in the same subject in more than
one school, the Board reserves the right to designate at which school the class will
be held.
4) Registration costs are payable on the first night of regular classes for the course
concerned, not on registration night. There is no provision for refunds.
5) The registration charge for each student is $5.00 except for Driver Education
where an additional $30.00 is necessary to cover in-car instruction costs.
6) Credit for vocational subjects: It is possible, by arrangement with the principal of
the continuing education school concerned, to receive credit for vocational courses
towards a Secondary School Graduation Diploma.
7) Academic credit courses may be used to progress towards a Secondary School
Graduation Diploma (27 credits) or Honour Graduation Diploma (6 credits from
the 5th year level). Consultation with the principal on registration nights or during
the evenings when classes are held may be arranged to discuss the requirements for
such a program.

Fifth year courses (grade 13): All courses will be 20
weeks in length. Classes will be held twice a week for 2
hours each evening that the classes are in session.
Ministry of Education time requirements will be met
by each student contracting to complete a project
assigned by the teacher each semester. Each project
assigned would be expected to involve some or all of
the following: research, reading as well as a final
written report or oral presentation.

4. Arts and Crafts
Experiment and have fun with a wide range of mixed
media. An introduction to basic techniques of water-
colours, Make batiks, collages, paper sculptures,
mobiles, posters. Would you like to learn the techniques
of line drawings, shaded drawings, or pen and ink
sketches?
5. Auto Body
This increasingly popular course will teach you how to
keep your car looking young.
6. Auto Mechanics
This course of study entails safety practices and the
safety checking of a vehicle. Maintenance items such as
lubrication, cooling system, fuel and electrical systems
are covered. Use of test equipment and methods of
engine tune-up, wheel balancing and alignment are
practiced.
The majority of time allotted to individual instruction
and practical application.
7. Auto Servicing
Here is another"money saving" course - everything
from grease jobs, oil changes and tire repairs to motor
tune-ups.
8. Beginning Computer Science
A comprehensive appreciation course. The student will
master some topics in considerable detail, but a general
understanding of data processing and the ability to
write basic computer programmes in (HYPO), a low-
level language, and (5LI), a hi-level language, is the
major consideration.
9. Bridge
Instruction commences with the very basics for beginners
but moves quickly to give the students a more complete
understanding of the "Standard American" bidding
system and the conventions contained therein. Some of
the more prominent ones being - Stayman, Gerber,
Blackwood and cue bids.
10. Building Construction
Planning to build a garden shed or garage? Learn the
proper use of basic hand toes and power equipment.
11. Cake Decorating & Sugarcraft
This is a fun course providing the foundation for an
interesting and artistic hobby. Learn the techniques of
cake decorating and the creation of sugar flowers and
novelty designs.
12. Contemporary Religion & Philosophy
Contemporary Christianity, Judaism, and Contem-
porary Philosophy as Yogi, Astrology, etc. The emphasis
will be on current trends in religion and philosophy.
13. Conversational French
Do you want to be able to order meals, ask directions
and shop in French? Come and spend one delightful
evening a week speaking French with your friends and a
well qualified Francophone teacher, Some basic gram-
mar is studied but the emphasis is on oral work.
14. Conversational Spanish
Empohasis is given to enable the students to converse in
simple Spanish although some basic grammar is under-
taken.
15. Copper Tooling
Just as the name implies - a design of your own
choosing or one supplied by the instructor is traced onto
the copper, then embossed, tooled, antiqued, and
lacquered. Students will make such things os pictures,
jewel boxes, book ends, planters, waste-baskets,
firescreens, etc.
The approximate cost to the student for a beginners set
of supplies would be $4.00 with the purchase of extra
pieces of copper as the need arises.
16. Crafts & Creative Stitches
Crafts include Christmas and Holiday decorations,
tablecloths, stockings and Tee-shirts, etc. Also included is
woolcraft articles, bazaar items, beads, feltwork and
wall-hangings, candles.
Creative Stitches include all types of surface em-
broidery: applique, cutwork and crewel embroidery.
Canvas work is included: needlepoint, petit point and
Bargello.
17. Crocheting
Crocheting and knitting from basic techniques of
crocheting and knitting to professional projects of rugs,
tapestries, etc.
18, Dancing (Ballroom)
This involves detailed Instruction of the basic steps and
elementary variations involved In fox-trot, polka, slow
waltz, viennese waltz, rhumba, jive, tango, cha-cha,
samba. About 75% of the time is spent where the
students are on the floor practising these steps with their
own and other partners. As proficiency develops, group
dances such as the F,iokey Pokey, Schottische, Bunny Hop
and Mexican Hat Dance add variety to the sessions.
19. Drafting (Mechanical)
Mechanical drafting is primarily concerned with the
drawing of bearings, gears, simple frameworks, etc.
This drafting is related to machining in industry.
20. Drapery Making
Here is a complete course that will teach you all the skills
and techniques to enable you to beautify your home'-
enjoy doing it - and save money.
21. Driver Education
learn to drive with expert instruction in a well equipped
facility. This course is based on Department of Transport
regulations. Insurance savings are possible for successful
students between the ages of 16 to 25 years, Three
hours per week for 8 weeks in addition to 6 hours of in-
car training. The fee for the course is $35.00 per student
to cover the cost of in-car instruction.
22. English & Citizenship
This course is for beginners in the English language. A
basic English vocabulary is introduced, Then simple
sentences and verb constructions'are studied, Finally for
citizenship purposes the various federal, provincial anfd
local governments ate briefly studied along with a short
history of Canada,
23. Ertglitft arszr Second Language
The students are encouraged in this course to become
more fluent in reading, speaking and writing the English
Language. Basic phonics, spelling, and grammar are
introduced and developed.
25, Fibre Craft
A new course in fibrecrafts will be introduced. Such
options as batik, tiedye, rug hooking, weaving, silk
screen, etc. will be undertaken. Thus the emphasis is
entirely on crafts.
26. Floriculture
A repeat of a very popular course'offered to make your
home and garden more enjoyable, Learn home gar-.
dening techniques and floral designing, to enchance a
more gracious indoor-outdoor living.
27, General Shop
General Shop is comprised of the following courses
a) auto repair and servicing
b) welding
c) woodworking
d) machine shop
Each area is project oriented and individual instruction is
provided as the need arises.
28. Gourmet Cooking
This ever popular course is designed for those who really
want to cook - for those who really love to eat.
29, Gym & Swim (Men)
During the first hour the men take jogging exercises
followed by calisthenics. Then individual participation is
encouraged in one of the following: volleyball, basket-
ball, swimming, weight training, trampolining, or
paddle-ball,
30. Gym & Swim (Women)
The ladies are taught basic swimming strokes along with
artificial respiration and drownproofing. The advanced
swimmers are allowed to play water ball, dive and take
some synchronized swimming.
In thegymnasium the ladies concentrate on calisthenics,
These exercises are followed by such sports as
volleyball, basketball, badminton, floor hockey and folk
dancing.
31. Hairdressing
Learn the techniques of personal good grooming.
Areas covered: hairstyling, curler placement, pin-curls,
back brushing, permanent waving, razor and scissor
cutting, wig placement and servicing, tinting, hair
conditioning, facial make-up procedure, eyebrow
arching and manicure.
32. Home Maintenance
Learn preventative maintenance on large appliances,
electrical maintenance, basic pipefitting, toilet tank
repairs, door knobs and locks, small appliance repair,
etc. In other words, everything you wanted to know
about home maintenance, but were afraid to try.
33. Horseshoeing
Anatomy of the horse's foot. Trimming and paring.
Fitting and nailing hot shoe and cold shoe.
34. Industrial Electricity
Part 1
A review of basic direct current theory including the
study of simple series, parallel, and signalling circuits,
The principles of permanent and electromagnetism and
their association to the operation of electrical equipment
such as signalling devices, generators, D.C. Motors and
Controllers.
Part II
An introduction to basic alternating current theory
including a brief study on inductive, capacitive reac-
tance and power factor terminology are related accor-
ding to student interest.
Three-phase across the line, motor starters and circuits,
transformer connections, types of three-phase and
single-phase motors, and a brief study of residential
wiring systems are also included according to time
allowance.
35. Instrumental Music
Join this group of beginners to learn to play a musical
instrument and have fun doing it.
36. Judo (Self Defence)
The basics of this course are: exercises, breakfalls, judo
rolls, study of throwing, self defence. It is the purpose of
this class to improve physical fitness and to study how to
master a situation by yielding - that is - agreeing
with the force of an agressor and using his weight and
strength against him.
37. Knitting
For both beginners and advanced knitters. The beginner
will be taught the basic stitches of knitting. The
advanced knitters are taught more complex stitches
enabling them to create intricate designs and patterns.
Knitting has proven to be beneficial and enjoyable as a
relaxing hobby.
38. Lapidary and Metal Spinning
An introduction to lapidary equipment and supplies.
Selection, cutting, polishing and mounting of rocks. Rack
tumbling and barocque jewellery making. Surprise your
family and friends with unique gifts.
39. Law
All adults should acquire a basic knowledge of the law
of contracts, relationship of servant and master, etc. The
emphasis is on business law not criminal law.
40. Leathercraft
All students start with the creation of a coin purse: then
more difficult to make articles such as a key case, a
wallet, a belt, braided belts, leather buttons, sandals,
end table covers and patch work purse.
41. Liquid Embroidery
The use of transfer in applying designs to different
materials.
The idea of using leisure time for making useful
decorative items for your home and wearing apparel,
as well as many useful gifts for your friends.
42. Macrame
Learn the ancient Turkish art of knotting and create your
own place mats, lamp shade, wall hanging, belt,
necklace, purse, or planter sling. Materials used are
very basic, but the results will amaze you.
43, Map Reading & Air Photo Analysis
Discover the landscape through the art and craft ohhe
map maker. Get more out of your travels and leisure
time, Aeronautical and navigational as well as
geological maps will be introduced.
The section on airphotos will include analysis of oblique
and overhead air pholcis,. Students will learn the
tecnique of map making from aerial photographs.
44. Modern Day Cooking
Here is a course designed to help, you prepare in a half.
hour economic full-course meals, which are colorful,
appetizing, and well-balanced.
45. Oil Painting
The classes assist in developiorig the knowledge and skill
of individual students in expressing themselves in
painting. An effort is Made to meet the needs of students
and such subjects as colour, design, techniques of painting and appreciation 61, art, Seginners and ex-
perienced students are welcomed as each can work to
his own level at his own speed,
