Come Close
In Walsingham Sunday af-
ternoon the Tigers came close to
getting on even terms or going
ahead on the scoreboard in the
top of the ninth.
With the Senators in front 6 - 4,
Dashwood scored once in the top
of the ninth and had runners on
second and third with only one
out but were unable to get
another runner across the plate.
The Tigers were first in the
scoring department with three
runs in their first trip to the plate
and were able to hold a 4 - 3
margin until Walsingham broke
out with three markers in the
eighth to go ahead.
Bob Hoffman opened the game
with a walk, moved up on John
Hayter's single and both crossed
the plate as Bill Schade rapped
his third home run in as many
games.
The Tigers upped their game
lead to four runs in the top of the
fifth when John Hayter led off
with a long home run, The
Senators were able to score two
runs in the fifth and one in the
sixth before their final three run
outburst in the eighth.

The Zurich midgets bowed out
of contention in the semi-final
round of the Ontario Baseball
Association "E" series over the
weekend.
The Zurich club travelled to
Emeryville Saturday and were
trounced 13 - 2, Back on the
Zurich diamond Sunday af-
ternoon it was much the same
story with Emeryville gaining a
15 - 8 victory.
Errors cause downfall
Five errors in the sixth inning,
Sunday, allowed Emeryville to
score six runs and carry onto the
15 - 8 win,
The Zurich runs came one at a
time in five of the first seven
innings and the final three
markers were scored in the
bottom of the eighth frame.
Gerald Weido led the Zurich
club at the plate with a double
and triple to his credit. Close
behind with a pair of singles was
Danny Schilbe, Chipping in with
one hit each were Don Ayotte and
Harvey Desjardine,
Pat Bedard was the starting
pitcher for Zurich with John
Mommersteeg taking over
during the big Emeryville rally in
the sixth.

Early runs only
In Emeryville in the opening
game Saturday, the Zurich boys
scored their only two runs in the
first inning.
John Mommersteeg singled
and scored on Gerald Weida's
long triple. Weido in turn scored
on an error. The only other
Zurich hits throughout the entice
game were singles from the bats
of Danny Schilbe and Don Ayotte.
The Zurich pitching procedure
was reversed with John Mom-
mersteeg starting and Pat
Bedard coming on later in relief.

One Big Inning
The fifth inning in Friday's
opening game of the series
produced most of the scoring,
Each team scored five times in
the fifth and the Tigers came
back with two runs in the bottom
of the eighth to get the victory,
Three Dashwood fielding
errors helped Walsingham to
move ahead with their five run
outburst as starting and winning
pitcher Dave Ratz allowed only
two base hits.
Basically the same thing
happened when the Tigers brake
loose in the bottom of the same
frame with three errors helping
the cause.
Bob Hoffman started things off
with a walk, Bill Schade was safe
on an error and Jim Guenther
cleared the bases with a long
blast that cleared the fence in
deep centre field.
Bud Desjardine opened the
rally with a double, Bob Hoffman
walked and Bill Schade was safe
on a Walsingham fielding
Miscue. Desjardine scored as
Schade was safe at first.
Jim Guenther then stepped to
the plate and cleared the bases
with a long blast which easily
cleared the center field fence.
Jim Hayter, next at the plate
was safe on an error as was Gary
Hartman and scored on Dave
Ratz's single to left field.
Both teams remained scoreless
through the sixth and seventh
innings. After two were out in the
ninth, Brian Bestard scored what
proved to be the game winner
with a solo shot over the outfield
fences,
Bob Hoffman was safe on an
error and scored an insurance
run on the strength of consecutive
singles from the bats of John
Hayter and Bill Schade.
Lefty Dave Ratz gave up only
five hits to the visiting
Walsingham club -and was in
Despite the fact, Team Canada finds itself on the
short end of the score to date in the series with the
Russians, the brand of hockey displayed in the four
games has to be the best ever played anywhere.
All games of the first half of the series provided
exciting end-to-end action for the full sixty minutes,
which is missing in a lot of NHL games.
A lot of reasons and excuses are being given for
the Canadian failure to win more than one game so far.
The facts are there the Russians are a complete hockey
club in every facet of the game.
Probably the biggest Canadian fault was the very
optimistic attitude taken by most observers which must
have beep reflected in the playing of the team.
The most glaring error in our opinion was the
report brought home from Russia by two Canadians.
They were Toronto Maple Leaf coach John McLellan
and chief scout Bob Davidson.
We don't know when the two Leaf officials saw
the Russians in action but they should be long gone to
an eye specialist.
The scouting report listed only one Russian,
Alexander Yakushev as good enough to play for Team
Canada. They could find no particular promise in goal
tender Vladislav Tretiak.
They were quite confident goal tending in the
series would be the big difference. They were right. It
has been the difference. But, in a little different way.
Tretiak's glove hand has been attracting pucks as if a
magnet was enclosed inside and his stand-up style of
goal tending has frustrated most of the Canadians.
Another Canadian theory that the Russians would
be unable to stand up to the hard hitting brand of
hockey supposedly dished up by Team Canada quickly
went out the window.
In order to slow down our ladies' editor in the
office next door, we made an offer that if the Soviet
club won five games in the overall series we would eat
our column with a little catsup added. In order to avoid
adding to our ulcer situation, Team Canada needs to win
at least two games on the trip to Russia.
Regardless of our wager, the Canadians in our
opinion will still put up a good showing in the final half
of the series against Russia.
Everybody talks about the disadvantages of
playing in the larger rinks in the Soviet Union, but we
can hardly buy all of this. Our Team Canada is made up
of our top professional hockey players and as such
should be able to switch to any playing condition.
The strong Russian skaters and their star Valery
Karlmakov in particular will certainly be harder to stop
on a larger ice surface.
It will really be an interesting series and promised
to provide exciting hockey in the four games in the
Soviet Union.
The Canadian team reaction to the boos in
Vancouver Friday night, shows they are really
concerned about the outcome of the series.
Phil Esposito became the team spokesman and he
seems to have the right to speak out. Esposito has been
the top Canadian player to date with terrific efforts
going both ways.

SOME TIGER POWER — The Dashwood Tigers won the first game
of their OBA Intermediate "D" finals at home Friday night by a
score of 7-5 and the two fellows shown above provided batting
power with the home run ball. Jim Guenther, left homered during
the fifth inning rally with two •men on base and Brian Bestard
slammed the game winner with the bases empty in the eighth.

Terrific Record
While Canadians are not doing as well in world
hockey play as most citizens would like, one native is
continuing a tremendous record in another sport. We're
referring to Fergie Jenkins of Chatham, by far the best
Canadian ever to appear on the American baseball scene.
Jenkins won his twentieth game of the season
Friday for the Chicago Cubs. This is the sixth
consecutive year, that Jenkins, the pride of Chatham has
won 20 or more games.
A Tight Finish
While on the big league baseball scene, the
pennant race in the eastern division of the American
league will probably go right down to the wire before a
winner is declared to meet the Oakland A's in the junior
circuit final.
No less than four teams have a chance at winning
and this really complicates the situation, Almost every
day two of the clubs are involved in games against each
other and this tends to make the race much closer.
As far as our favorite Detroit Tigers are
concerned, a four game series this week with the
Baltimore Orioles is very important.
