Hydro strike becomes one of longest
Hydro's operations, neglect of
routine work has created a back-
log which probably won't be
cleaned up until the strike comes
to an end.
"Supervisory staff have been
successful in maintaining the
vast power system across the
entire province. In addition, by
working exceptionally long hours
they have restored service to
thousands of homes following
severe storm damage in just
about every section of Ontario,"
Mr. Palmer explained,
He said one of the main con-
cerns was the inconvenience to
about 2,000 new home owners
whose residences are ready for
electrical service, but can't be
connected to the system because
of the strike,
There appears little hope of
very many of them being con-
nected until personnel in the area
offices return to work.
Scots coming

The Campbells are coming
and so are the MacDonalds,
MacMillans, MacPhersons,
MacGregors and all their
Highland cousins from all over
Canada and the United States for
the first annual Scottish World
Festival to be held at the
Canadian National Exhibition,
Toronto, Canada, August 17 - 20.
It will be the greatest Ceilidh
ever held in North America.
Ceilidh is Gaelic for party — and
that's just what it will be in
Toronto, Canada, as the Scots
take over the 350-acre Canadian
National Exhibition for an
International Gathering of the
Clans.
The Duke of Argyll, Chief of
Clan Campbell, heads the parade
of Scottish Chiefs coming to
Toronto for the Festival. Also
coming are; the Rt. Hon. Lord
MacDonald, Chief of the Clan
Donald; General Sir Gordon
MacMillan of MacMillan, Chief of
the Clan MacMillan; William
Macpherson of Cluny, Chief of the
Clan Macpherson, and Lt. Col. Sir
Gregor MacGregor of
MacGregor of the Scots Guards,
Chief of Clan MacGregor.
The four days in August, the
17th to 20th will feature a Scottish
military tattoo, Scottish displays,
a Scottish variety show and the
military band of the famed Scots
Guards — plus over 2,000 pipers
and 500 Highland Dancers from
Canada, the United States,
Scotland and New Zealand.

May," Mr. Palmer stated.
However, a news release this
week from cup4. said Hydro
continues to mislead the public
by saying the Union has made no
reply to its May 2 offer, "We did
present a very much reduced
package to the government
mediator, but Hydro refused to
budge on its preconditions of split
wage, continental work week
and no job security clause,
thereby blocking negotiations,"
The Union also claims many of
their members are not on strike,
but in reality have been locked
out.
The present Hydro offer would
mean an average increase in
wages for CUPE members of
about 11 percent over two years,
plus an extra three percent in-
crease in the second year of the
contract if the consumer price
index rose three percent.
Mr, Palmer also said im-
provements to the pension ,plan
and introduction of a long-term
disability plan would be in-
troduced,

GB to limit
street parking
At a special meeting Thursday
night, Grand Bend council in-
structed the village solicitor to
prepare a bylaw restricting
parking on Main street.
Between the hours of 8 a.m. and
2 a.m. parking will be limited to
one hour, At the same time,
motorcycles will be restricted to
one for each parking spot.
The parking regulations would
be in effect each year from May
15 to October 15.
At the same meeting a motion
to proceed with erosion control
work on the Ausable River in
Grand Bend was defeated.
An estimate from the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority
had listed the village's share of
the work at about $17,000, In a
recorded vote, councillors Bill
Cochrane and Dave Jackson
voted in favour of the motion with
councillor Murray Des Jardins
and Reeve John Payne opposing.
Payne said it was not fair to
bind another council to a debt of
this amount.

Dear Sir;
I was wondering if you could
see your way clear to give us
first, a few minutes of your time
to read my letter and secondly, if
you consider it worthwhile spal;e
in your paper so that the general
public can peruse it and think
about it; then take some action to
bring the problem to a successful
conclusion.
My story starts with the saying
that we often hear in the spring
just when the snow has left "Isn't
everything so dirty. It sure will
be nice when the grass starts to
grow and greens up, and we get
the spring rains to wash things
down."
Well the spring rains come, and
the grass grows and greens, but
there are some articles that the
rains cannot wash away — or the
grass doesn't grow tall enough to
cover it and that is the litter that
is so carelessly thrown or placed
along our highways, picnic or
park lands.
Even if the grass does manage
to cover it, there are people who
keep adding to the litter year
round.
, The Highway Traffic Act states
ttiat "Eyery person who throws
'or deposites or causes to be
depbsited any glass, nails, tacks
pr scraps of metal or any rubbish,
refuse, waste or litter upon, along
or adjacent to the highway, ex-
cept in receptacles provided for
the purpose, is guilty of the of-
fence of littering on the high-
wa.'
If
y
a person is convicted of this
offence, a sizeable fine can be
imposed by the courts.
A police officer can never be
everywhere, so it is up to the
public to help their police force
because a police force is only as
good as the co-operation they
receive from the public. A
policeman is an employee of the
public, but like an employee, he
must have the equipment to do
the job and in his case, the more
information he can receive, the
better the job can be done.
In this case, we are not asking
the public for information, but
rather that they police them-
selves and the members of their
families.
It's true that one little cigarette
butt, one facial tissue, one pop
can or one ice cream wrapper,
just to mention a few articles,
doesn't cover much area, but
WOW! — If everybody that uses
our highways or parks dropped
one little article what a mess it
would be,

Local potter
attends course
Interest in Canadian arts and
crafts is making a come-back,
and Exeter is not without its
share of very capable craftsmen,
or women, as the case may be.
Mrs. Flora Doerr, a local lady
specializing in pottery has
recently returned from a three-
week advanced summer course
in ceramics at Sheridan college.
The course was taught by a
well-known American artist,
Donald Reitz, Professor of Art at
the University of Wisconsin. Most
of the students in the program
were Americans, both because its
much cheaper to take such a
course in Canada, and because
they are following Prof. Reitz and
his reputation.
"It was a fantastic three
weeks," said Mrs. Doerr. "We
started at 9 every morning, and
didn't stop until the wee hours of
the morning:: She said that Prof.
Reitz taught not only technique,
but lectured on his personal
philosophy with regards to a
person and his art work.
"We all felt the same . like
we'd gotten a three-year course
in three weeks," said Mrs. Doerr.
The next show for which Mrs.
Doerr is preparing will take place
August 4 and 5 in Lucknow. She
makes stoneware pottery. "Most
of it is very functional," she
said. "Just about anything one
would use in a house."
Horse winner
Lloyd Venner of Hensall won
the senior division of the Ontario
horseshoe pitching competitions
held in Dowling, near Sarnia
recently.
Venner downed Elmer
Crawford of Minesing and Oscar
Rowe of New Lowell with even
scores of .4-2,
Emmerson Anderson of Kippen
placed second in the men's ,"B"
championship class with an 8-3
score.-
