Once they get over the idea that
art is not just for girls, they enjoy
it, and work hard at it. "Girls are
sometimes too finicky,"' said

MR. AND MRS. JAMES R. BLOMFIELD
For Ruth Anne Merner, Dash-
wood, this is the first summer she
has been really free to do what
she likes best. But for the London
high school art teacher, this
doesn't mean just sitting around
at the cottage in Port Franks.
She has been very busy getting
ready for two displays of her arts
and crafts, both of which take
place this week.
Her specialty is Salish
weaving. This is an art form
which originated with the Salish
Indians of British Columbia and
is now becoming popular again,
after almost disappearing, In the
wall hangings and other ap-
plications of this weaving, Ruth
Anne can incorporate all colors
and textures of materials,
everything from unwoven Wool
and yarns to rope, sticks and
pottery, It is much chunkier than
macrame, or other similar types
of crafts, and this is the way Ruth
Anne likes it. She feels she can
make a much wider variety of
hangings, because of the freedom
with the colors and textures.
Some of her work is on display
in the lobby of the Huron Country
Playhouse. With three other
ladies, Mary Coonan, London;
Helen Watts, Grand Bend; and
Mary Morris, Lucan, Ruth Anne

is in charge of the art displays for
the Playhouse. Mrs. Coonan and
Mrs. West are displaying pain-
tings, while Ruth Anne and Mrs.
Morris are providing wall
hangings. One of the most im-
pressive pieces on display is an
eight-foot wall hanging, done by
Ruth Anne,
In addition to preparing for the
opening of the Playhouse, she is
preparing for the Arts and Crafts
display and sale in Grand Bend
Friday and Saturday, Along with
the Salish weaving, Ruth Anne
and Mrs. Morris will display
stained glass mobiles, macrame
purses, note paper made from
wood cuts and prints, weed pots,
and jewelry, among other
things.
Right now, Ruth Anne is just
waiting to get her kiln hooked up.
Then she hopes to be able to make
much more use of pottery in her
work.
She is also learning to weave
from Mrs. Fred Messner,
Dashwood, both for herself and so
she can teach her students at
Banting Secondary School in
London.
Ruth Anne majored in fine art
at the University of Toronto, and
really enjoys her work. "I
couldn't teach anything else,"
she said.
