Tiger
year
The many enthusiastic Detroit Tiger fans in the
area are beginning to stir again. With the Tigers in first
place, although only by a small margin, pennant fever
could become a distinct possibility,
So far it's been a case of the home run ball and
adequate pitching performances. The veteran performers
on the club have been standouts to date, despite a lot of
cold and wet weather.
Just wait until the temperatures go up and fellows
like Al Kaline, Norm Cash, Jim Northrup and Mickey
Lolich really hit their stride.
These first three paragraphs were written Friday
afternoon. The happenings at Tiger Stadium Saturday
would certainly bear out our optimistic views.
Before more than 40,000 roaring Tiger fans, Al
Kaline stroked a home run, Mickey Lolich won his 13th
game of the season and Jim Northrup leaped high above
the fence to grab a Dave Johnson line drive and fired a
perfect throw back to the infield for a spine tingling
double play to end the game and give the Tigers a 2-0
victory.
Lolich is well on the way to his best season in the
majors. He now has 13 wins and five losses as compared
to a 10-6 record at the same time last year. In
Saturday's game he threw only 98 pitches in gaining the
victory. In 1971 Lolich finished with 25 wins, the best
in either league.
As for Northrup, it couldn't happen to a nicer
guy as far as we are concerned. At the 1968 World
Series in Detroit we had a chance to talk to Jim for a
little while and he was just great.
On Saturday's spectacular catch, Mickey Stanley
who usually makes this type of play said Northrup's
glove was at least six inches above the nine-foot barrier
when he made the catch.
Kaline, in his 20th season with the Tigers has
been getting his share of home runs. In a recent game,
Aurelio Rodrigues, Kaline and Willie Horton hit
consecutive home runs.
A game like Saturday's again restores one's faith
in baseball in general. Often the action, or the lack of it
dulls the senses and practically puts you to sleep.
Then it comes to life with a couple of great
fielding plays by Brinkman and Rodrigues, Kaline's
home run and the game ending double play.
The Tigers image of being the worst base running
team in the majors is being spoiled this year. Tony
Taylor stole second base Saturday on believe it or not, a
pitchout. To put the icing on the cake, Lolich went
from second to third on a fly to right field.
Actually, only six bases have been stolen by
Tigers this year. Taylor has three in as many attempts,
Gates Brown has two and Jim Northrup one.
Not all excitement in baseball is limited to the
major leagues. Only last week, the Exeter pee wees
completed a neat triple play.
First baseman Perry Pooley grabbed a hot line
drive stepped on first to double the runner there and
then fired to shortstop Fred Robinson who stepped on
second for three outs in a hurry.
[rti\ TA BallQuiz
The answers to last week's questions are as
follows. The big league ball parks with the smallest
seating capacities are Jarry Park in Montreal and
Fenway Park in Boston. The original name of the home
of the Detroit Tigers was Navin Field.
Questions — When the New York Mets first joined
the National League, the fans along the first base line
wore T-shirts with the letters VRAM on the front. This
was a joke about their inept fielding first baseman. Who
was he?

Expos break into win column,
streak lasts for one game
The Crediton midgets won both
starts this week in Western
Ontario athletic Association
baseball league play.
Sunday night in Crediton, they
edged Hanover 11 - 10 and
Tuesday night it was a 6 - 2 win in
Goderich.
Two Innings Enough
Three run rallies in each of the
fourth and fifth innings were
enough to give Credi ton their 6 - 2
win over Goderich.
Singles by Bill Hodge and Keith
Davey were the only Crediton
hits in the fourth inning rally and
the three runs in the fifth came
without any hits.
The only other Crediton
safeties during the game were
singles from the bats of Pete
Wuerth and Ron Funston.
Rick Bowers went the distance
on the mound for Crediton and
gave up only four hits while
striking out seven Goderich
batters.
A single run in the bottom of the
sixth inning proved to be enough
to give the Crediton midgets an
1140 win over Hanover in
Western Ontario Athletic
Association play in Crediton
Sunday evening.
Larry Clarke's single sent Bill
Hodge home from second base
with the game winning run.
Hanover threatened to tie the•
score in the seventh inning but
Crediton hurler Kevin Bestard
shut the door quickly. The first
Hanover batter in the inning
reached first safely but Bestard
struck the next visitor out.
retired the second on a roller
back to the mound and got the
last on a fly to left field.
In chalking up the victory
Bestard recorded an even dozen
strike-outs and gave up eight well
scattered hits,
Singles by Rick Bowers,
Rodger Finkbeiner and Bill
Hodge produced the first three
Crediton runs in the third inning.
The Crediton club came up with
a big rally in the fourth that
netted six runs, Rick Bowers
smashed a long home run to start
the scoring splurge. Following
singles by Ron Funston, Rodger
Vinkbeiner and Larry Clarke
along with a couple of Hanover
errors completed the fourth in-
ning tallying.
The tenth Crediton run came in
the fifth when Rick Bowers
singled and scored on Ron
Funston's double.

Tigers winning .by a score of 4-1,

contest and Sunday afternoon at
two o'clock they will be at home
to Arva,
Come close
The Expos loaded the bases
with nobody out in the ninth in-
ning in Dashwood Sunday af-
ternoon but were unable to get a
run across the plate.
Excellent relief pitching by
southpaw Jim Guenther
preserved the 4-1 Dashwood lead.
Cons'ecutive singles by Terry
Bourne, Bill Fairbairn and Scott
Burton loaded the sacks and
Guenther switched from his
catching position to the mound.
The stocky left hander quickly
struck out two batters and got the
third on a grounder to short and
the ball game was over,
Bill Schade started on the
mound for Dashwood and gave up
only three hits until the ninth.

easy win
The Exeter bantams scored a 7
- 1 win over Dashwood Monday
night in a regularly scheduled
Western Ontario Athletic
Association baseball game in
Dashwood.
The Exeter club scored four
runs in the first inning to take a
good sized early lead, The only
Dashwood marker came in the
bottom half of the same inning.
In the Exeter first, Doug
Osgood and John Gould walked
and Brian Taylor, Bill Wilson and
Paul Brooks each singled and all

Exeter youngsters and limited
Dashwood to five well scattered
hits. Doug Mclsaac clouted four
of the five Dashwood safeties.
Wayne Clarke was the Dash-
wood hurler allowing a total of 12
hits. Brian Taylor led the Exeter
hitting attack with his home run
and two accompanying singles,
started off right with single runs
in each of the first two frames.

back to the bench by way of
strike-outs.

were the top Exeter batsmen,

two singles while Stover had a
single, a double and two bases on
balls in four trips to the plate.

one hit apiece were Brad Gregus,

of the third when Barry Baynham
NNW safe on a fielder's choice
stole second and third and scored
on an error.
Baynham was actually picked
off third on a good move by
Schade but this throw to third.
tore the webbing on third
baseman Pete Ravelle's glove
and Baynham scored as the ball
rolled away.
Singles by Gary Hartman, Bob
Hoffman and John Hayter off

wood runs across the plate. Jim

held the Tigers scoreless the rest
of the way,

recorded four strike-outs.

ning Expo hurler Scott Burton
experienced any problems.
In the Expo opening inning,
Barry Baynham walked, Bill
Bourne doubled, Terry Bourne
singled and all came home on
Scott Burton's booming triple.
The big smash in the Tiger
scoring rally was Jim Hayter's
home run to deep left field that
carried all the way to the horse
barns. Adding a single for Dash-
wood was Jim Neilson.

Grant, Bill and Terry Bourne
