FOR ALL GOAD SPORTS
By Ross .Haugh
Big weekend
If effort and planning mean anything at all, this
weekend's Friedsburg Days at Dashwood will be a
huge success. The second annual event, sort of an Old
Boys Reunion will get underway late Friday af-
ternoon, continue through a complete day of ac-
tivities Saturday and probably conclude in the wee
hours of Sunday morning.
Nearly all of the townsfolk and many residents of
the nearby farming communities are pitching in to
ensure a successful program.
Committees are working hard on every section of
the Days to iron out kinks which appeared in last
year's first presentation.
Sports will again play a big part in the two-day
event with the tug-of-war promising to provide plenty
of thrills and excitement.
The defending tug-of-war champions, the Shipka
Bulldogs will have to be at their very best to defend
their crown.
Invaders from the north will be in Saturday's
pulling competition and from all reports they are
strong. George Tiernan, co-chairman of the sports
committee with Glenn Webb told us Monday night
that Cargill, champs of Bruce county have entered
and will be travelling to Dashwood by bus with a load
of enthusiastic supporters.
We have heard from reliable sources that the
Cargill team pulls against a team of horses in prac-
tice sessions. Sounds like a good way to get top notch
opposition.
The first round of the tug-of-war battles will start
around four o'clock. At the moment only three teams
have entered but Webb and Tiernan hope to have a
fourth competitor by Saturday to ensure an even
playoff.
The first rounds will be a two-out-of-three pulls
duration. Each team will be allowed eight men to do
the pulling. An official coach will be allowed to give
all the directions he deems necessary.
After supper the finals will be staged, again of a
two-out-of-three variety. The third team definitely to
be in action in addition to Shipka and Cargill will be
Jack Guenther's Strongmen.
Saturday night sport action will pit Lieury
against the Exeter softball all-stars.
All in all, Friedsburg Days should be bigger and
better than ever. See you in Dashwood, Friday and
Saturday.
Friday night activities include a challenge soft-
ball game between rivals from neighbouring com-
munities of Shipka and Mount Carmel.
While eating is probably not listed as a sport,
Friedsburg Days get off and running Friday night
with sauerkraut, spare ribs and sausages available to
all. We had a sample of the sauerkraut Monday night
and with the Dashwood reputation for sausage we
know the appetites of all invaders should be well
taken care of.
Saturday's activities get rolling early in the af-
ternoon with a mammoth parade. Last year's parade
was the best you could ever hope to witness in a small
town and the 1972 version promises to be even better.
The middle of the afternoon hours will be filled
with an exhibition baseball game featuring the Dash-
wood bantams. This will allow the tug-of-warriors to
get their muscles flexed and ready to go.
We almost forgot the horse shoe tournament
which will be going continuously Saturday afternoon
with top throwers from all parts of Western Ontario
competing.
Let's swim
With a little more help from the weatherman,
activities at the Exeter swimming pool should be into
full swing next week especially with all school
students out on the loose for the summer.
Recreation director AlvinWillert asksus toadvise
that starting next week open swimming hours will be
from two to four in the afternoon and 7.30 to 9 p.m. in
the evening. For the rest of this week it's after school
swimming from 3.30 to 5 p.m.
Adult swimming lessons get underway at the pool
Monday night with a charge of fifty cents per evening.
They will go weekly Monday through Thursday.
Open swimming charges will be 15 cents for each
outing for those 16 years of age and under and 30 cents
for persons 17 or older.
Season tickets for swimming go on sale at the pool
this week and include a few changes in prices from
last year. The charge for those 16 years and under will
be $7.50 with a $10 fee for those 17 and over. The
family plan will be in effect for $20.
Last year the charge was $5 up to 14 years of age
and $7.50 for swimmers 15 years and older with the
same $20 charge for a family group.
Baseball Quiz
On the suggestion of a couple of our readers
(probably all of them) we are going to run a baseball
quiz for the balance of the summer.
One week we will ask two questions and in the
following column provide the answers. So here goes
for this week.
Which parks in the American and National
baseball leagues are the smallest as far as seating
capacity are concerned?
The home park of the Detroit Tigers is now called
Tiger Stadium and before that Briggs Stadium. What
was the name of the first Tiger park?
High salaries
With Bobby Hull expected to sign this week with
the Winnipeg Jets for several million dollars, it
prompted us to do a little checking to find how much
sports stars of other eras received.
Babe Ruth has to be one of the all-time greats in
baseball so his salary should be a good comparison.
Most people will probably be surprised to learn Ruth's
salary in the season of 1932 was $80,000 with an added
bonus of $2,500.
An area harness racing en-
thusiast for more than 40 years
has fulfilled a long-time am-
bition.
Jack Morrissey of Crediton is
now a full-time presiding judge
Crediton gets
midget win
In the only midget action of the
week in the district in the
Western Ontario Athletic
Association, Crediton downed
Exeter by a 12 - 3 count in Exeter,
Wednesday night.
Each team scored twice in the
first inning and then Crediton
broke the game open with a seven
run outburst in the third frame.
Brian Tuckey and Perry Stover
singled and scored for Exeter in
the opening inning after Bob
Heywood and Kevin Bestard
counted for Crediton as the result
of Bill Hodge's single.
Keith Davey's two bagger and
singles by Ron Funston, Bob
Heywood and Bill Hodge
provided most of the power for
the seven run Crediton rally in
the third.
Hodge's third, straight safety
sent Rodger Finkbeiner home for
the winners in the fourth and
Rick Bowers and Ron Funston
scored the final Crediton runs in
the seventh.
The final Exeter marker came
in the fifth when Brad Gregus
tripled and came in to score on a
Crediton fielding miscue.
Rick Bowers was the winning
pitcher for Crediton giving up but
five well scattered hits while
fanning nine. John Wuerth went
the distance for the losers.
Weather wins
over bowlers
The weatherman curtailed
activities at the Exeter lawn
bowling club this week. In the
only jitney which was played
Tuesday night, Elizabeth
Lamport finished in first place
for the third time this year.
Mrs, Lamport headed the
competitors with two wins, a plus
of 20 and aggregate of 31. Next in
line came Alvin Pym with a plus
of 18 and 32 aggregate to go with a
double win.
A new member in the club this
year, Charlie Hendy was third
with two victories, a plus of 11
and aggregate of 31. Finishing
fourth and fifth, respectively
were Lillian Pym and Glenn
McKnight.
Some members of the local
club will be participating in
holiday tournaments in Aylmer
and Goderich over the upcoming
weekend.
Good turnout
for men's nite
The regular men's nite at the
Ausable golf course attracted
more than 30 golfers Tuesday
night.
Joe Fulop emerged as the low
gross winner with a score of 76.
Next in line with an 82 was Bryan
Propozanski. Following in order
were Doug Pinder, Bob White
and Gerry Smith.
A real battle took place for the
low net prize with Don Gifford
and Doug Ellison finishing with
equal scores of 72. Earl
Knoblauch was close behind with
a 73 while Bob Callingham and
Walt Romaniuk each turned in
net scores of 74.

Although working part-time as
a racing judge for about nine
years, Morrissey is now under
contract to the C.T.A. from April
1 to December 1 of each racing
year,
His trip to the west will include
presiding at two top notch tracks.
He starts at Edmonton on August
16 and will then move to
JACK MORRISSEY
Assiniboia Downs at Winnipeg,
September 16 and continue until
November 14,
Until the time comes for the
western trip, Morrissey will be
busy six days per week at
Western Ontario tracks.
His schedule for July has stops
in Woodstock, Tuesday; Owen
Sound, Wednesday; Orangeville,
Thursday; Elmira, Friday;
Hanover, Saturday and back to
Orangeville Sunday afternoon.
In 1971 he was presiding judge
at Dresden, Elmira, Clinton and
Goderich.
While unable to see his own
horses in action very often due to
the busy schedule as a presiding
judge, Morrissey maintains a
stable of four pacers.
The pride of the Morrissey
string is Philbuck Grattan, who
has earned more than $11,000 this
year. Others in the stable are
Super Roy, Chris Gold and a
green colt named Nancy's Roy.
As a presiding judge, he is
responsible for handling of all
inquiries, objections and testing
of horses.
At most meets, all winners
along with eight or nine other
horses picked at random by the
judges are tested.
Morrissey said during his
judging career he has found only
four or five positive reactions
from tests.
