JULY 1972
IDENTIFICATION OF A MEDICINE
Can you tell what a medicine is just by looking
at it? How difficult this is to do was recently
brought out in an interesting study done on the
colors, shapes and markings of just tablets and
capsules.
HOW MANY SHAPES ARE THERE?
Enough to make it complicated—bevelled, con-
cave, convex, elliptical, flat, diamond, heart,
pear, oblong, oblong with neck, octagonal, oval,
pentagonal, round, square and triangular were
some of those listed as commonly found shapes
of medicines.
WHAT ABOUT COLOR?
Besides the thirty three separate and distinct
color guides shown on our chart there were
the notations that in addition to these there
were forty-five other tablets and capsules that
could not be described in terms of a single plain
color. It further noted that all of the above
did not include white and that white accounted
for nearly twenty per cent of all tablets and
capsules produced.
THERE ARE ALSO MARKINGS!
Still another aid to identification of a particu-
lar drug is by the manufacturer's marking.
The study reported that there were nearly 500
different markings that could appear on tablets
and capsules.
THE COMBINATIONS ARE ENDLESS
Knowing about medicines is the most impor-
tant part of being a pharmacist. We take this
responsibility and challenge seriously and care-
fully study about each new drug as it is released
for public use. But, when someone stops in and
says, "You know, it was a little red pill." It
may take a little Citric to recognize the exact
medicine. Bob Middleton, PhmB

highly intelligent, After a couple
of goes at university, he quit, He
had his wild times and bad times.
Now he too is a Bahai. He doesn't
have a degree, but he can talk
rings around most university
professors, in French or English.
He works at a tough job, second
chef in a restaurant, to support
himself, He had a chance to be
bar-tender for more money, but
serving liquor is against his
principles. He planned to go to
Frobisher to pioneer the faith.
Then he thought there were
enough "missionaries" there and
made a deliberate decision to
attempt to spread the faith in the
east end of Montreal.
I can't see much future in
trying to convert to Bahai any
substantial number of French-
Canadian Catholics. But Hugh
has a peace and serenity and a
simplicity of life'that one can only
envy. He doesn't want any
"tnings," just enough to keep
alive and keep covered, I wish I
were twenty years younger.
