The Home of Guardian Maintenance Honda Mini-Bikes Riding a mini-bike is fun, But making a Mini-Trail is a serious business. Even though they're compact and portable, Honda builds Mini-Trails the same way we build our big bikes: strong enough to take it; tough enough to keep on taking it. And because we take building them so seriously, you can keep on having fun with them longer. If you buy a Mini-Trail, please re- member this: motorcycles, however small, are not toys. Make sure you know how to ride well before you try to ride fast. And always wear a helmet and protective clothing wherever possible. Riding is a lot of fun. The Huron-Perth is one of the oldest intermediate leagues in the province of Ontario and this year eight clubs are expected to compete. An organization meeting of the Exeter team will be held tonight, Thursday at the Exeter arena at seven o'clock, Baseball enthusiasts of all sorts are asked to attend this very important meeting. Players in particular will be welcome along with persons willing to assist in any way, We heartily endorse this attempt to get back on the baseball scene as there appears to be plenty of playing talent available. Jim Pfaff, a former pitcher with Zurich and Mitchell teams in the Huron-Perth is the driving force behind the proposed Exeter club, Pfaff represented Exeter at Saturday's initial league meeting along with Jack Glover. A meeting to draw up the schedule has been set for May 15 in Clinton, Other teams entered are from Dashwood, Clinton, Mitchell, Arva, Thorndale, Wingham and Walkerton. Mrs. White and Mrs, Bob Baynham received roses from the players, presented by Mrs. Erwin Bestard and Mrs. Lorne Haugh. Music for dancing was provided by the Country Tones and lunch was prepared by a group of enthusiastic lady sup ti - porters, including mothers of the players. Saturday afternoon, the entire club and management were paraded through the streets of Exeter in convertibles and pick- up trucks displaying their many trophies, Ron Janke picked up the Bob I3aynharn trophy donated by the Hawk manager to the best defenceman on the club. In attendance at the evening festivities were Huron MP Bob McKinley and Exeter Mayor Jack Delbridge, EMHA president Harvey Pfaff was master of ceremonies. Pfaff, on behalf of the players presented a special award to Ruth White. The coach's wife received a pair of miniature boxing gloves in recognition of her 'fighting spirit' in supporting the Hawks during the year. Competing in the all-day event are expected to be about 150 retarded children from all parts of Western Ontario. About 30 boys and girls from the Children's Centre at Palmerston will be included. Area recreation officials are pitching in to organize and supervise the various events. Ron Bogart of South Huron District High School will be the director while Exeter's recreation director Alvin Willert and his counterpart in Wingham will be in charge of sports demonstrations. In the track and field events each competitor must enter the 50 and 100 yard dashes while two other classes are optional. Entry may be made in either the 400 yard run, standing broad jump, high jump or ball throw. The demonstrations will cover at least six different sports. Trampolene and gymnastics, horse back riding, hockey, floor hockey, soccer and wrestling will be on the agenda. Helping out with the demonstrations will be representatives from the Exeter Saddle Club, the Exeter Hawks and athletes from South Huron high school. The final cheers for the 1971.72 edition of the Exeter junior Hawks were heard Saturday night but not from the usual place, Instead of being cheered on at the arena, the Hawks received plaudits from more than 300 of their more enthusiastic fans at the Exeter Legion hall, The players received a large number of trophies from various donors and the balance of in- dividual awards were made. Some of the trophies were handed out at the Hawks banquet a week earlier, but this time, all were awarded for the benefit of the large crowd of supporters, Each player received a trophy with a picture puck from the Exeter Minor Hockey Association, a gold key chain memento from the OHA and pen set trophies from Ruth and Bob White. Individual awards were many. Goalie John Hayter and speedy forward Steve Murley were named the most valuable players through the season and playoffs, respectively. Bob Rowe was named the most improved player over the year and also received a trophy as the most "aggravating" player on the club. The rookie of the year was Defenceman Rob Lindenfield with Brian Campbell getting the Gary and Shirley Middleton trophy as the most gentlemanlike competitor. Two brand new trophies were presented Saturday night. Randy Preszcator, a member of last year's Hawk club and this year with OHA Junior "B" champion Markham Waxers donated a trophy to the top Hawk scorer of the year, It went to captain Larry Haugh. T-A photo The Huron-Perth intermediate baseball league will be back in action again this year with a record number of teams ready to start the season about May 24. For the first time in about eight years, Exeter will be represented. The first meeting of the year was held Saturday af- ternoon in Mitchell with a good representation in attendance. Entering teams in addition to Exeter were the reigning OBA "D" champs from Dashwood, Mitchell, Arva, Thorndale, Wingham, Walkerton and ;Clinton. The new Exeter entry was represented by Jim Pfaff and Jack Glover, A local organiza meeting is being held tonight, Thursday at the Exeter arena at seven o'clock. Attending Saturday's meeting for the Dashwood Tigers were Bob Hoffman and Bill Schade. The Dashwood Tigers will be holding their first practices of the season tonight, Thursday at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Minor season closes with hot dog feed Cliff Russell Consumers' Association of Canada reports that each year children are drowned because they have been using air-filled plastic toys as floats. Parents are warned to keep a vigilant eye on their youngsters to make sure these playthings are used safely. R.R. 2 DASHWOOD, ONT. PHONE 238-2481 GRAND BEND was the midget winner. The novice house league championship was won by Vancouver. Tony Mattucci and Alvin Willert were the coaches with Dan Bell handling the captain duties. Chan Livingstone and Gary Middleton were in charge of the pee wee ct'ubs. The Black Hawks with Dennis Preszcator as captain won the league cham- pionship while the Bruins with captain Paul Pooley won the playoff title. Bob Rowe of the Exeter Hawks was in charge of the second bantam all-star club. Ron Horn and Tony Mattucci were in charge of the mites with Wilmar Wein and Mike Higgins looking after the squirts. A very successful season of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association came to a close Saturday afternoon with a hot dog feed at the Exeter arena. The appetites of the boys was as good as their enthusiasm for playing hockey. About 150 youngsters consumed more than 600 buns and wieners. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the awarding of most improved player trophies to the six different categories. Scott Batten was named the best improved among the squirts with Doug Fletcher winning in the mite division. Getting the novice award was David Cann, Jim Cockwell was the pee wee winner, the bantam trophy went to Jeff Davis and Bill Van Bergen A sporting pair While this next item isn't exactly classed as sports, it's worth mentioning. Our good friend Sid Daley of the Lucan Legion left Saturday for a one-month tour of Europe. The interesting factor here is Sid's travelling companion, his 95 year old father. We met the senior Daley about a year ago. He is a sprightly fellow for his advanced years. Have a good holiday, fellows. Final plaudits While the recent championship win of the Exeter Hawks will long be remembered, the final get-together of the year was held Saturday night at the Legion hall. Coach Bob White, a very modest fellow paid tribute to the boys for their excellent behaviour on the final week-end in Bancroft and the terrific fan support received. The coach said his biggest problem was in convincing 'his boys' they should skate away from the numerous high sticks without retaliation. Before Sunday's final game with at least half the club showing signs of physical abuse from the night before, he was trying to get them up for the big win. At this point, the dressing room door opened and the chant of 'Go Hawks, Go' came from about 500 Exeter supporters. White said with the loud noise, the players came alive and he knew he had a championship club. The players received a variety of trophies Saturday night. In addition to a memento from the OHA and personal picture trophies from the Exeter Minor Hockey Association they received pen set trophies from Ruth •White, wife of the champion coach. Mrs. White was alsia receipierit of an award. EMHA president Harvey Pfaff presented her with a miniature pair of boxing gloves. It seems she somehow got into a slight skirmish with an opposing female fan in Clinton early in the year.
