A, MacDDNALD The principal of Centralia's College of Agricultural Technology, Jim MacDonald recently returned _from, a trip to China as a member of an Ontario government mission, In the following article he gives some of his impressions of the country. In March I was privileged to participate in an Ontario Trade Mission to Peking in the People's Republic of China, The mission provided mean opportunity to .* travel in China and then to continue on to the Phillipines, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Honolulu. In recent years China has indicated an interest in ex- paneling her animal agriculture and my responsibility was to exchange technical information and provide information on Canadian livestock production and management systems, China recognizes Canada as one of her close friends — this friendship dates back to the contribution made to China by Dr. Norman Bethune in the field of medicine. In the years 1937 to 1939 Dr. Bethune, a native of Gravenhurst, Ontario, trained medical technicians and treated hundreds of wounded Chinese soldiers during the Sino Japanese war, Memorials have been erected and the "Bethune" building in Canton tells of the many heroic deeds performed by Bethune, The Chinese policy is to make their country as self sufficient as possible. Imports are restricted to domestic products that are in short supply and to other high priority items required in their development and expansion plans. They rely on export ear- nings to pay for imports and hence China carries no foreign debts. Canada is China's sixth most important trading partner and in 1971 total trade to China exceeded $200 million. In turn, however, Canada imported approximately $20 million of goods from China. Wheat ac- counts for most of the Canadian exports received in China, Since the revolution in 1949 China has placed a high priority on improving agricultural production in an attempt to achieve self sufficiency in food production. With less than 10 per cent of her land arable and with a population of over 800 million people a quarter of the world's population — it is doubtful if they can achieve complete self suf- ficiency but their improvement in recent years is dramatic. This has been accomplished by im- proved land, water, and fertility management. A gigantic land levelling program has produced huge tracts of level farm land in the areas we visited, around sPekinge This program is still in progress and new areas are being prepared for agricultural production. This has been a colossal task and practically all of the improvements have been made by hand labour. The land levelling program has provided them with a more effective water control system — this combined with increased use of chemical fertilizers and good production practices has resulted in con- siderably higher yields of feed and food crops. The farms in China are organized on the large commune basis. The commune I visited comprised 9,000 acres of land and included extensive livestock, poultry, fish, and fruit en- terprises, The livestock operation included 2,200 head of Holstein cows, a breeding herd of 500 sows as well as a large broiler and Peking duck enterprise. In ad- dition to supporting the 3,600 households and the 29,000 people associated with this commune, the workers have an annual commitment to produce required quotas of meat, milk, fish and fruit for the State, Although several tractors are used on this commune — many of them two wheeled hand operated, most of the field work is per- formed manually. Over 80 per cent of China's 800 million people live in the rural areas and although much of their land would adapt to mechanization it Jets lose Continued from page 8 except a 10 minute misconduct to Barry Baynham of the Jets in the third period. During one hectic session around the Jet net early in the third period when the Comets had the pressure on, goalie Lorne Daer lost his stick and one glove. His mates were able to clear the puck away and with the help of Barry Baynham and Dick Doughty was able to get all his equipment back, The Jets were without forwards Bill White, Pete Loveless and Steve Storey for the final game. All were out with injuries. Talking about the final series with Napanee, manager Don Urbshott commented, "I don't think we were consistent enough. We played good hockey for awhile and then if we letdown for a couple of minutes, they scored goals." Urbshott continued, "If a club is playing real well, letdowns won't hurt you." Questioned about the lack of stiff competition during the year, the manager replied, "I don't think the lack of stiffer games hurt ifs toceniuch. Although, if the. competition 'would have been a little, teughes, during the season some of our faults would have shown up quicker and we could have corrected them." The Jets were unable to find a suitable league to play in during the season and had to settle for exhibition games. is difficult to imagine an in- dustrial expansion that would provide enough employment for the peasants should they mechanize their agriculture, We had an opportunity to visit primary and middle schoolS at the commune where 8,000 students attended. Also located on this commune was a hospital and supporting health centres and clinics, China has had a very colorful and turbulent history and it was equally interesting to see many of the famous historical sites located near Peking the capital city of China, Majestic Tien An Men (Gate of Heavenly Peace) faces Tien An Men square in the central part of the city, More than half a million people gather here annually when Chairman Mao Tse Tung and Premier Chou En Lai address the people and A SOUVENIR -.- Jim MacDonald wears a "Mau" cap he brought back from his trip to China. successive dynasties a beautiful summer home consisting once again of magnificently designed buildings set in a beautiful garden on the edge of Kunming Lake. Over the centuries the Summer Palace has on occasions been damaged by invading forces — but it has been restored and is now a beautiful location for the Chinese people to visit and enjoy. Much has been written about the Great Wall of China — in fact it has been said that it is the only man made structure on earth that could be seen by telescope from the moon, The Great Wall is built in an extremely moun- tainous area in the northern provinces and extends over 6,000 kilometers in a winding haphazard manner. The wall is at least 20 feet high and on the top approximately 16 feet wide. The wall was built over 2,000 years ago by forced labour — it was built in parts by the different provincial rulers and was later joined to form the one continuous wall. The tombs of 13 Ming emperors are located in a natural am- phitheatre formed by a backdrop of mountains, The entrance to the tomb areas is guarded by large carved figures of many animals and soldiers, We visited the Bowling scores MEN'S "A" LEAGUE CA (W. Ming Emperor Wan Li, who ruled from 1573 to 1629. The tomb consisted of huge marble lined halls and rooms that provided burial space for the emperor, his many treasures, his wives and his concubines. The Chinese are excellent hosts and have an established reputation for their excellent cuisine. The menus of the many luncheons and dinners we at- tended generally included a range of fish, pork, poultry — often the Peking Duck — and vegetable dishes. Provided also were the traditional dishes of rice and different kinds of soup. Normally dessert included a variety of fresh fruit, After our eight day visit in China I must say that I became quite proficient with chop sticks. Considerable publicity was given to mao tai by the Nixon party on their return from Peking. Mao tai is a clear liquor (130 proof) made from sorghum and it is used in the many toasts that are proposed throughout the seven and eight course meals. We were en- tertained on two occasions at the world famous Peking Duck restaurant and in the dining room at the Peking hotel. Although the meals we were served contained a great variety of food this is not generally the case in China. Fresh pork is perhaps one of the main sources of animal protein but the diet of the people generally is restricted to rice and bean curd — a protein drink made from soybeans. The combination of these foods is nevertheless very nutritious and in our travel in China we saw no evidence of starvation or malnutrition because of the apparent adequate supply of these protein and energy foods. Although their system of government may have its faults it has achieved one important thing — a general distribution of the country's wealth among the masses of its population and has provided adequate clothing and food for the people.
