Plan construction
at Parkhill school
At its regular meeting April 4
the Middlesex County Board of
Education approved a con-
struction brief on North Mid-
dlesex District High School in
Parkhill. The plan calls for
alterations to the present
building and a one-storey ad-
dition to be completed by Sep-
tember 1973.
The project, if approved by the
Ontario Department of
Education, will increase the
school's capacity from 470 to 791
• students. The enlarged school
will accommodate Grades 7 and 8
in addition to . the traditional
secondary school years.
Enrolment in September 1973 is
expected to be about 670.
As well as adding three stan-
dard classrooms, the addition
would contain a senior special
education room, boys' and girls'
occupation shops, two industrial
arts rooms, a combined music
and theatre arts room and a
double gymnasium. There would
also be a stage, two change
rooms, and a storage area.
The present gymnasium would
become a library resource centre
and the room now used as a
library would return to its
original use as a classroom.
Approval of the construction
brief is the latest step taken to
carry out a plan adopted in 1969.
At that time, the Board approved
the concept of a school ac-
commodating Grades 7 to 13.
There has been a growing need to
improve facilities at North
Middlesex District High School
and at many of its feeder schools.
Rather than building small ad-
ditions, the Board has chosen to
build one large one. Not only will
the enlarged high school serve
more students, but there will be
improved use of space in the
elementary schools.
In other business, the Board
agreed to a request from the
Directors of Craigwood School
for emotionally disturbed boys,
near Nairn, that the Board
provide administrative and
supervisory services, Craigwood,
operated by the Mennonite
Central Committee of Ontario,
Will pay for the County Board
services. There are about 28 boys
currently enrolled at the school.
The agreement between
Craigwood and the Board reflects
a trend towards increased
cooperation arid liaison between
Boards of Education and
Organizations which operate
Specialized programs for
students with partiettlar needs.
