Formers to pay tax
on diesel -fuel bills
HurOn County Federation of
Agriculture. fieldman William
Crawford has confirmed that
farmers will have to pay tax on
DISCUSSING CAN CROP$ — The annual Huron-Perth Can-Crop banquet at the Exeter Legion Hall,
Thursday was well attended. Chatting during a break are from the left canning crop farmers Paul
Coates and John Simpson, negotiating representative Clarence Down and Perth Ag Rep Newt Ashton.

diesel fuel even though they can
later apply for a rebate.
Crawford said the payment of
new tax introduced in the
provincial budget the end of
March is unnecessary "double-
booking."
The payment of the tax came to
light at a Huron federation
meeting last week. The meeting
was told Huron County farmers
are paying 25 cents per gallon on
diesel fuel that costs only 24 cents
a gallon wholesale.
To confuse the issue further,
not all diesel fuel distributors are
levying the tax, said Allan
Turnbull of RR 1, Grand Bend,
Mr. Crawford said the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture op-
poses the tax payment.
Mervin Smith of Walton, vice-
chairman of the Huron County
federation, complained that the
price of fuel oil In the county is the
highest in Ontario - as much as
eight cents higher than in other
counties.
"This deserves looking into,"
he said.
The county federation also
approved a pilot project in
l-iullett township to help bring
down the cost of fuel. Twenty-five
farmers will join forces to buy
their fuel in bulk, thereby
reducing the cost per gallon for
each farmer,
The farmers reported that a
similar venture in Napanee,
Lennox County, last year reduced
the cost of gasoline by six cents
per gallon and the cost of diesel
by four cents per gallon.
.Conning crop
contract let
Letting of contracts for pea and
Corn acreage by the Exeter plant
of Canadian Canners should
begin this week.
This announcement was made
Thursday night at the Annual
banquet of the Huron-Perth. Can-
Crop Growers by local Canners
manager Jack Urquhart,
Urquhart said 'Pea acreage
will be about the same as last
year with some reduction in the
amount of corn being planted."
Clarence Down, local
representative of the priee
negotiating board said prices for
peas and corn were settled and
were essentially the same.
There is a change in insurance
this year with crops being
covered under the Ontario Crop
Insurance program if the grower
so desires,
The premium rates for this
year are $3,50 per acre for peas
and $2.25 per acre for corn.
Insurance may be taken out at
the Exeter Canners office with
premiums being paid either in
cash or deducted from the crop
cheques in the fall.
The chairman of the local
Growers Association is Gerald
Paul of Kirkton who was also
chairman for Thursday evening's
program.
Also in attendance in addition
to processor and grower
representatives were Don Pullen,
Huron's Ag Rep and Newt
Ashton, the Ag Rep for Perth
County.
In a short speech, Don Pullen
read from a news report of 1918
listing a total of 68 acres of corn
being grown for the Exeter
canning plant.
Newt Ashton spoke about the
upcoming International Plowing
match which will be held in his
county near Sebringville from
September 26 - 30, which is two
weeks earlier than usual.
The entertainment for the
evening was provided by Bill
Meek from the CTV television
show The Pig and Whistle.

The Ontario Egg and Fowl
Producers Marketing Board has
asked the Ontario government
for a guaranteed loan and the
federal government for a subsidy
to help bail producers out of
financial difficulties incurred in
the past two years.
Announcement of the requests
was made at the annual meeting
of the board held in Melton.
The move to seek provincial
help originated with a motion put
forward by Huron and Perth
county producers whose
representative said, at the
meeting, he was "alarmed and
shocked to see the plight of some
producers."
The provincial government
request asked for a loan of two
dollars a bird to a maximum of
20,000 birds per producer. The
money would not be used for
expansion of facilities and would
be made available only to those
who had been in production for
the past two years.
It was suggested that the loan
should be interest-free for the
first two years with repayment of
principal and interest (at five
percent) to commence in the
third year and total repayment in
10 years.
The request to the federal
government directed to the farm
products stabilization board,
asked for a subsidy payment of
two dollars per laying hen
marketed, the subsidy limited to
20 percent of each producer's
present laying flock. It was
suggested the payment end April
30 this year.
To make the program ef-
fective, producers asked for a
total embargo on the importation
of table egg production stock, and
for a higher duty on imported
eggs.
A motion seeking provincial
authority to reduce the number of
hens in the province through a
compulsory fowl sell-off
program, was tabled when Brian
Ellsworth, board secretary, said
there was no legal basis for the
action,
The 3,500 registered producers
in the province own nearly 14
million hens.
Statistics show that producers
with under 5,000 hens represent
78 percent of the total
registration but have only 14
percent of the province's total
laying hens.
Producers with more than 5,000
hens represent 22 percent of
registration, but have 86 percent
of the hens.
In an effort to define an egg
producer, delegates approved a
motion that the Ontario Farm
Products Marketing Board be
asked to accept as a producer one
who has 500 egg-laying hens or
more for at least two years
preceding the time a question
(requiring a vote) arises.
If this definition is acceptable,
