HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1972-04-13, Page 6All roads from this area will lead to. Eastern Ontario this week when two area hockey teams head out in pursuit of Ontario hockey championships. Most important for hockey fans in the immediate area is the jaunt by the Exeter Hawks to Bancroft Saturday morning. The Hawks in the middle of a tremendous winning streak are within two games of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" championship which eluded them a year ago. The local juniors scored two decisive victories over Bancroft here over the weekend and should have a good chance in wrapping up the title Sunday afternoon* Coach Bob White has his club in high gear and the boys appear in the right frame of mind and "up for the big games,." White has his club thinking hockey continuously and they are giving him one hundred per- cent at all times. The Bancroft club could be a bit tougher on their home ice with more vocal support but we feel the Hawks are capable of bringing home the championship. Most of the players were in last year's final against Haliburton and gained a lot of experience that should come in mighty handy this weekend. The entire club has been turning in a good team effort ever since the playoffs got underway, With Sunday's 10-4 win over, the Hawks chalked up their 18th win in 20 playoff starts and ran their current win streak to six games. The only losses in post-schedule play were a 4-2 loss to the Clinton Mustangs in the second game of the league semi-final series and an 8,2 defeat at the hands of the Fergus Green Machine in the first game of the provincial During the 20 playoff games to date, the Hawks have scored 117 times while having a total of 67 goals scored against them. Goalie-John Hayter continues to hold a "hot glove" over the opposition while the defensive corps has been more than steady during the playoffs. The three forward lines have been showing their scoring abilities through most of the games. The line of captain Larry Haugh, Steve Murley and Ron Lindenfield came up with II goals in the two weekend games with Bancroft. Another imp octant aspect to the Hawks success to date in the playoffs has been the terrific fan support they receive at home and on the road. Fans are important to the success of any club and the Hawks appear to have the best in the country. Since they were eliminated by the Hawks in an earlier round, at least six members of the Simcoe IGA's have followed the Exeter club in every game and expect to be in Bancroft this weekend. One of the Simcoe players told us the Exeter fans are the loudest they have come across this year. Best of luck to the Hawks as they head to Bancroft Saturday morning and the Ontario championship, At the same time, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets will be heading for Napanee and the third and fourth games of their OHA Intermediate "B" finals. From all appearances, this series could quite easily go the full seven games with a break or two deciding the issue. The two weekend games at Huron Park were decided in the latter stages of play. The two teams are very evenly matched and produce a rugged brand of hockey. The Jets won the coin flip and will be back at the Huron Park arena, Friday, April 21 for the fifth game and the seventh on April 29 if it becomes necessary. Two extremes in speed Two sporting events over the weekend showed a remarkable contrast in speed. During the television coverage of the Masters golf tournament early Saturday evening we were amazed to see a putt by Charles Coody hang on the lip of the cup for at least eight seconds and then drop. After the ball stopped rolling Coady just looked at it for several moments without making a move and then the announcer said, "it might drop" and it did. The fastest action over the weekend has to be the overtime goal by Pit Martin of the Chicago Black Hawks. Martin scored at the .12 second mark of sudden-death overtime to give the Hawks a quick four game sweep over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Going strong While the current edition of the Exeter Hawks could end the 1971-72 hockey season this weekend, a member of last year's club has still plenty of hockey ahead of him this year, The Markham juniors with Randy Preszcator as a valuable member are currently leading Peterboro in the OHA Junior '13' semi-final and are odds on favorites to Meet either St. Catharines or St. Marys in the final. If Markham and St. Marys do meet in the final, it Will give local fans a good chance to see Preszcator in action. Randy was the first draft choice of the Toronto Marlboros and despite a layoff because of illness has been a valuable addition to the Markham club. Another incentive While the Exeter Hawks seem to have plenty of desire and the backing of their more than enthusiastic fans, the boys were given another incentive this week to bring home the championship, George Rether of the Ausable Golf Course announced he would provide a free year's membership to the course to all players and management of the Hawks for winning the provincial title. Hawks are flying high and in many cases score. In both games, the visitors from Bancroft were able to stay close to the Hawks for the early portions, especially in the first period. The halfway mark of the second period was reached in the Sunday game before the Exeter club was able to get a two goal margin for any length of time. Saturday night after a close first period with the Hawks holding only a one goal lead, the locals broke loose with three quick goals the first six minutes of play to take the steam out of the visitors. Scoring for Exeter in the middle frame were Ron Lin- denfield, Pete Glover, Pete. Kleinstiver and Steve Murley, Tallying for the Jets were Dunne and Grant Bronson. Very little scoring took place in the third period. Jim Guenther scored the first of two Exeter markers taking a direct pass from the face-off from Larry Haugh and finding the range, The other Hawk scorer was Pete Glover on a play set up by Bob Rowe. This time Bancroft sqoared the score in exactly a minute with the goal being fired by Philip Scott, Three fast goals in about three minutes near the halfway mark of the second period put the Hawks into a lead they never relinquished. All three goals came on three-way passing ef- forts. The first at seven minutes came from Haugh with help from Murley and JimGuenther, Then it was Pete Glover on a play started by Ron Janke and Bob Rowe and Janke completed the quick scoring with assists going to Ron Lindenfield and Haugh, The only Bancroft goal of the middle frame was notched by Jim Dunne, one of their more effective performers. Before the second period was over the Hawks had moved the score to 0-3 as Perry Stover was on the finishing end of a passing play with Brian Bestard and Pete Glover to beat Kim Young in the Bancroft cage. The Hawks scored twice in the final session, before the Bancroft boys were able to get the puck past John Hayter in the Hawks net, Peter Kleinstiver grabbed the first goal of the third on a neat unassisted effort and Larry Haugh scored from Steve Murley for the other.
