One of the problems that Israel had with God (or was it the other way around) was that he was using other, sometimes pagan nations to do His will. From an ethical point of view, the Sunday School may not be any different from say, the secular humanist. The good humanist loves his neighbour, cares about the underprivileged, upholds the rights of the in- dividual, etc. etc. The Christian does essentially the same, but does so within a Christian frame of reference, Although what is done is the same, the Christian acts because of a belief in God, the secular humanist doesn't. The value of the Sunday School lies in its being a place of assessment and celebration: a place where a child can look at experiences and feelings, at- titudes and values in the light of what we believe God has said and is saying, In that experience the child is affirmed: he gets to know himself as a child of God. Through that perspective he influences society, This doesn't mean that should we drop the Sunday School, our society would become "im- moral." It might lose something of the God dimension and that would be unfortunate, but society, if for no other reason than its own survival would find a way to seek justice, will take only so much garbage. Technology demands large amounts of the earth's mineral wealth. The U.S. for example with 6 percent of the world's population uses 40 percent of the world's resources. Someone has compared the earth to a space ship with a given amount of "rations." We have a respon- sibility to plan for the longest journey possible. I'm reasonably optimistic that we will control population. India, a country with an aecnte shor- tage of food for its number of people has been advocating family planning for some years and with some success. Canada, apparently one of the "more backward" nations in advocating birth control, nevertheless seems to be moving toward smaller families. According to a survey last year in the Toronto area, at the present rate of decline, Canada will reach the two children per family average within a hundred years. Do you believe that religion should be taught in the Public School System? This is the fourth in a series of controversial questions asked of district ministers. Rev. Glen Wright of Exeter United Church and Rev, J. T Beaton, who is the minister of the Zion-Centralia United Church charge, are this week's contributors. Mr. Beaton is also presently attending A Ithouse college of Education. We are sorry to report that Rev. R, H. Thynne, Emmanuel Baptist Church, who had also agreed to give his opinions, was hospitalized last week. in view of population explosion do you feel families should be limited to two children? Mr, Beaton; I have not yet been able to come to a conclusion as to the exact number of children a family should have, We have two girls and a boy whom we love very dearly, but, I hope that we have no more. I believe in family planning and I discuss it at length with every couple that comes to be married and send them to see a doctor. There are some situations where I think a couple should be denied the right of having children, I don't know who will play God but someone ought to at times. I will give one example but many other situations can be cited, When parents are before proach then would become one of examining the claims of a 'religion" from an historical and ethical point of view, In no sense, at least in terms of Christianity, should one suggest that what is being taught is the Christian faith. Christianity can be experienced only within the church setting. What I am suggesting is that schools can teach content and teach it well. For the church, subject content is not primary: what is most im- portant is exposing the child through relationships to the love of God. I believe the religious curriculum should go beyond Christianity to include other major world religions as well as secular humanism, This would enable the student to respect and appreciate beliefs and cultures that differ from his own — rather important I suspect, if we are to live in a world that has been called a global village. Do you think Sunday School still has an important role to play in our Society? Mr. Wright: Certainly the church or more specifically, the Christian ethic has and does influence society. The Sunday School as a facet of the churches understanding and expression of God's good news is a part of that influence. The Sunday School or church, however, has no exclusive rights to the ten commandments or the "golden rule" and certainly not Mr. Beaton: Sunday School still has a very valid place in our society. It is not fulfilling the same role as it did 50 years ago but is still very im- portant in the life of a church, THE Huronia Male Chorus Presents The HURONIA SINGERS In The Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta PATIENCE April 6, 7, and 8 South Huron District High School TICKETS ON SALE AT Dinney Furniture Store, Exeter Ron's Health Centre, Hensall Russell Electric, Exeter Tieman's Hardware, Deshwood Lindenfield Hardware, Exeter Oesch Shoe Store, Zurich Tickets may also be purchased at the door KIIII*1.11•60.111,041.1.0.14.01............M.01•11•04110.11•111.(10•M(1411111.1.100111.01.0.M. /.... rE0114.111•041010.4.0.4.11.1101.0410.1.1111......10.0.1141.111,11.•••41.1101.011111.1.00004•00IIMW11100.7 I i Entertainment NOTICE We have been in business since 1971. But they are competing with highly paid, skilled, well-trained professionals in the school and on T.V. I believe the time has come when we should have paid, highly skilled religious educators as teachers in Sunday School. But I have not yet found a church that will give enough to fulfill the concept. Until then, my hat is off to those dedicated volunteers, ill-paid, ill- appreciated teachers and may God bless them in their en- deavours. The Separate School System in Ontario is by legal definition a public school supported out of public coffers. The same privilege is not given to all. This I object to . I do think that if religion is going to be taught it should be comparative religion with a larger proportion of time spent on Christianity as it is the basis of our Western culture. The problem arises when you try to find a common deposit of New Testament doctrine in the Christian Church, To overcome this present impossible task, some of the government reports, such as the McKay & Wright report, talk about moral teaching. This happens whether you want it or not by what is called hidden agenda' by precept and example. What is the basis of morality that should be taught? In my present studies at Althouse College of Education, I have heard a professor tell a class that they would be priests and priestesses of the future ( I wonder if they know the role that will have to be fulfilled). This refers to religion and not merely morality, My deep feeling is that teachers, educators and educational professors are confused as to what ought to really happen. Much of this confusion arises from the almost total lack of training on a professional theological basis. My own children have had some teachers who let religious ideas and values come through in teaching and were very creative and valuable. The reverse has also happened and I have had to spend extra time to reteach Christian doctrines that were confused by naive and very immature Christians, To be valid, I also have to say that there are some ministers I never want my children to have in Religious Education if it exists or is to exist. I suppose that they would have the same feeling about my religious instruction. This all goes to point up the confusion and almost impossible task of religious education but it is not a valid reason to abdicate the throne of responsibility. I believe that religion should be taught in all public schools but we are in desperate need of organization and order. Rev. John Beaton our Courts and are declared unfit parents and the child has to be taken from them to be protected, these people I believe should be sterilized. It is difficult enough for children to cope with modern life and the pressure of school and society when parents are loving, but with parents who do not love or even hate, beat up or try to kill, it is very damaging and some of the children never recover emotionally. Our Courts can do nothing to save these children until there is legal reason or proof of cruelty. This is similar to blowing out the match after the fire has been started. I think it would be better never to light the match. }1111111111,1111{51}1111111tt{!1{1111111[llllll1111111l111111111111111111111111Illtllll}Illlllllllllflilliilii}811111{/f 11111f11mmt Mr. Wright: Religion has made too im- portant a contribution to man's development to be ignored. I believe it should be a part of the school curriculm. The public school system, however, is limited in what can be taught, not only because of its objective analytical approach, but because it must respect the variety of religious — or humanistic approaches held by students and teachers. The ap- Mr. Wright: Cutting down on the birth rate is not only desirable, it's a necessity if the human race is to survive more than a few hundred years. Limiting families to two children is good survival policy. It took the human race from its beginning to 1850 to reach a billion people. Now we are adding a billion every 12 years. The total world population is doubling every 35 years, At that rate of growth there will be one person for every square yard of land surface in a scant 600 years. Granted, the earth will ac- commodate more people than there are now — but it won't accommodate an infinite number, Its space is limited. Reaching a zero rate of growth i.e., two children per family is desirable for another reason: the earth not only has limited space but limited resources, There is only so much copper and oil; the atmosphere has only so much oxygen: the water, air and soil By MRS.
