of carbohydrates, one of the
outstanding manifestations of
thiamine deficiency is a central
nervous system disorder— polio.
Most diets have sufficient
thiamine to supply the needs of
cattle, he continued, but it is now
known that certain thiamine-
destroying enzymes thiaminase,
can find their way into cattle
feeds and cause a deficiency,
"The source of the thiamenase
in cattle could be due to certain
fungi and moulds and it has been
suggested that these may live in
the rumen and continue to
produce thiaminase, thereby
destroying dietary thiamine as it
is consumed."
He said the disease occurs in
animals of all ages but cows and
yearlings are most commonly
hit.
The disease is characterized by
sudden onset of blindness. The
animal may stand with head held
high, usually separated from the
others.
In 12 to 24 hours the animals

Pork producers

there is a surplus in Canada.
The board was asked to push
for adjustments by Bruce and
York county producers, although
one director suggested there
"wasn't a hope in hell" for
success when member nations of
the General Agreement of Tariffs
and Trade were making an effort
to reduce tariffs.
A Middlesex County resolution
which would have ruled on the
eligibility of committeemen was
lost. The resolution stated that in
order to be eligible for election a
committeeman should be a
producer who had marketed a
minimum of 100 hogs and
maintained a herd of 25 or more
sows in the previous year.
Carl Clayton of Napanee
pointed out that eligibility
',i-equirements could be changed
in the future and that there was
the danger that the market board
someday be operated exclusively
by larger producers,
Another resolution asked that
seed manufacturers be obliged to
label the percentage and source
of protein and other trace
elements used in seed con-
centrates. One delegate ex-
plained that protein derived from
feathers is less desirable in seed
and is widely substituted for
protein from other sources.
Delegates turned down a
resolution from Elgin County
which asked the federal
government to discontinue
freight subsidy on western feed
grain brought into Ontario.
Another resolution which was
defeated would have given pork
producers membership in the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture and consideration for
the annual grant which the
OPPMB makes to the OFA.
