Meet defending champs
The Luean-Ilderton Jets are
back in an Ontario Hockey
Association Intermediate "II"
final after an absence of one
year.
The Jets polished off the
Ingersoll Marlands in five games
in a semi-final round and now
meet the Napanee Comets for the
provincial championship, The
Comets are defending champs
having defeated the Durham
Huskies a year ago.
In the 1969-70 series, the Jets
downed the Comets for the
Ontario title, Each club has eight
new players since they last met in
the finals,
The Jets completed the
Ingersoll series with a4 - 1 win in
Ingersoll Wednesday night and a
6 - 3 decision at Huron Park
Friday night,
The championship series, a
best-of-seven affair opens at the
Huron Park arena, Saturday
night at eight o'clock with the
second contest slated for the
same place Sunday afternoon at
two o'clock, The next two games
will be played in Napanee the
following weekend.
Off to flying start
While the Hawks only scored
one first period goal in Fergus
Friday night, they came out
flying from the opening whistle
and missing a hatful of scoring
opportunities in the first couple of
minutes.
The first Hawk score came at
3.40 when Perry Stover was able
to display good puck control.
Stover broke over the Fergus
blueline with only one defender
back. His shot was blocked by the
defenceman but he was able to
poke the puck through the Fergus
player's legs and although get-
ting turned around was able to
slide the puck into the net.
With only 30 seconds to go in the
initial period, Hawk goalie John
Hayter came up with a spec-
tacular save as Kim Biernes
broke in all alone.
The second period was only a
minute and a half old when the
Hawk lead suddenly rose to two,
Larry Haugh got the face-off
right back to Ron Lindenfield
and before Fergus goalie Torn
Broderick could blink the puck
was in the net.
At 4.02 of the same period, the
Hawks moved three goals in front
on a good passing effort with Pete
Glover converting a pass from
Bob Parsons.
The Green Machine hit the
scoreboard for the first time at
6.42 as Mery Griffin broke loose
behind the Exeter defence and
made a good play to pull Hayter
out of position.
Steve Schwint was on the firing
end of the second successful
Fergus shot near the end of the
second period. With only two
minutes gone in the final session,
Terry Bolger tied the game up for
Fergus.
The winning goal for Exeter
coming at 6.08 was due to per-
sistent checking by Bob Rowe,
Pete Glover and Steve Murley,
shortly after the latter returned
from serving a penalty. Murley
got the puck loose to Glover and
he scored on a quick shot.
The insurance tally came about
on a similar effort, This time
Murley poke checked a Fergus
man coming out of his own end,

started the play underway.
Bob Rowe picked the puck up

out the right boards to Pete
Glover who in turn hit a high
flying Rowe in the centre ice area
and he went roaring into the
Fergus end and scored from close
in.

into the net,
In the last minute of play, Jim
Guenther of the Hawks and Ron
Driscoll of Fergus engaged in
fisticuffs which ended quickly
when Guenther flopped on top of
his opponent.
Another exciting wrestling
match took place at the same
time with Pete Glover and Bob
Rowe containing Brian Bestard
who wanted to join in the fray.
The Fergus arena was jammed
with the largest crowd of the
season, 1,397 to see Fergus lose
their first game of the season on
