The Hawks reached the finals and the right to meet Bancroft by downing the Fergus Green Machine 6 - 4 in Fergus Tuesday night. Tuesday's win was. the Hawks 16th in 14 playoff starts and eliminated Fergus four games to one. The Hawks patented come- from-behind "never say die" pattern was at its best against Fergus. After losing the first game in Fergus by 4114 - 3 count, the Exeter club bounced back to win four straight. After tying the series on Exeter ice last Tuesday at a game apiece, the Hawks moved into Fergus Friday night togain a 5.3 w i n, won 5 2 at home Sunday afternoon and wrapped the series up Tuesday night. Tuesday's win was also ac- complished in a come from behind fashion. Trailing 4 - 3 at the halfway mark of the third period, the Hawks again caught fire and scored three times in less than four minutes to assure their participation in the Ontario finals. Penalty marred In Tuesday's game either Ott had little chance to show their proper scoring abilities until the third period, Penalties came fast and furious in the first period which took almost an -hour to play. The Hawks were able to score one goal early in the first period before the penalty parade started and OM back with another late in the period with the teams playing five aside. Penalties again curtailed action in the second period but behind his own net and hit Brian Bestard with a pass up along the right boards near his own blueline, Bestard in turn found Perry Stover with a pass at centre. Stover broke right through the defence and es he was moving in on goal slid a perfect pass across to Pete Kleinstiver and the Dashwood youngster Made no mistake in bulging the twine. Less than a minute later Pete Glover scored for the Hawks to make it 2 - 0 at the end of the first period. Again it was a good passing play to set up the score, Bob Rowe and Bob Parsons picked up assists. Fergus fought back in the second period and scored two goals by Randy Fleming and Mery Griffin while the Hawks were having penalty problems, Griffin's goal came with Rob and Ron Lindenfieid sitting out in- fractions. The actual winning goal came at the .48 second mark of the third period with the Exeter club again playing shorthanded. It was the — Please turn to Page 7 the ability to get loose in front .of the Fergus net paid off for the Hawks Sunday afternoon as they chalked up their third win of the series by a score of 5 - 2. The two goals from the stick of Steve Murley in the third period to sew .up the game for the Hawks came as the Hawks left winger was left completely uncovered in front of the net, With the score 3 2 at 15,57 centre Larry Haugh, got the puck back to the blueline where Jim Guenther let a hard shot go right on the net. The Fergus goalie made the stop but the puck dropped right at his feet and Murley was johnny-en-the-spot with no Fergus opponent in sight and he had little trouble in scoring. • With only 45 seconds remaining it was a similar situation with Murley getting loose in front of the net and counting on a play started by Ron Lindenfield and Larry Haugh, The first Hawk goal of the game actually came on a four- way passing play, Rob Lin- denfield picked up the puck Each week we keep mentioning exciting hockey action that is coming up in the near future and this week is far from being any exception. In fact this week, the district has one hockey club in the Ontario finals and another club very, very close, in fact they may be in by this time, The Lucan-Ilderton Jets are back in the OHA Intermediate "B" final round after an absence of one year and at the time of writing the Exeter Hawks are only one game away from provincial final competition. The Jets will be meeting the Napanee Comets in a best-of-seven final with the first two games at the Huron Park arena this weekend. Napanee won the championship last year after losing to the Jets in the 1969-70 season. The Comets defeated the Durham 1-luskies for the title last year. The first game of the weekend will go at the Huron Park arena Saturday night at eight o'clock with the second slated for Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. This series promises to be a good one. Each team has added eight new players since they met in the finals two years ago. Of the additions to the L-1 club three are from Exeter, Bill Bonnie and Barry Baynham will see action this weekend while the third Larry Willert will be on the sidelines because of injuries suffered in a car accident a couple of weeks ago. Terry Bourne is in his third year with the Jets. Also on the list of newcomers since the 1969-70 title winning effort are goal tender Lorne Deer along with Dick Doughty, Bill White, Pete Loveless, Bob Knack and Bill Dunnell. The situation for the Exeter Hawks in making the Ontario finals also looks very good. The Hawks at the time of writing are leading the Fergus Green Machine three games to one and may have it wrapped up by this time. If the Hawks do get by Fergus they will meet Bancroft for the championship which eluded them last year. This series could also get underway on the weekend. Bancroft, winners of the grouping which includes Lakefield and Haliburton has apparently not met any competition outside their own league. At the moment the Hawks possess a tremendous playoff record with fifteen wins and only two losses in playoffs with one of those losses being to the Clinton Mustangs in the opening round of the local league. The Hawks have been turning in an exciting brand of hockey for the past month. Friday night's game in Fergus was one of the best all-round team performances the local club has turned in in many a year. Everybody was hustling and giving more than a one hundred percent effort. TOP SCORERS WITH GOALIE — The top scorers for the Hawks with five goals each during the last three playoff games were Steve Murley, left and Pete Glover, right shown with goalie John Hayter who continues to come up with the big saves. T-A photo Local Broncos bow out of OMHA playdown action The Exeter Broncos bowed out of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association final round Sunday afternoon as they lost a 6 - 3 decision to Petrolia at the Exeter arena. Bogart was the top Bronco scorer with 14 goals and 10 assists. Next in line with 11 goals and nine assists was Brian Mercer. Dan Bell was third with 15 points and Steve Skinner next with 11 points. Only one strike so far The score is nothing to nothing with one strike and somebody likely to be caught off base. That appears to cover the current strike between the major league ball clubs and their players. When this column was written early Monday afternoon, there seemed to be little hope for a settlement before Wednesday's scheduled opening games in the American and National leagues. This is the first time an entire league of teams has refused to play ball but not the first for an individual team. Back in 1912, the Detroit Tigers went on strike when their ace outfielder Ty Cobb was suspended for hitting a fan. The strike lasted only a day when the league president decided to reinstate Cobb. For one game, The Tiger management recruited a team from college and amateur ranks around Detroit and lost to the Philadelphia Athletics by some twenty runs. Tie for top in dart loop three goals were scored. Exeter held a 3 - 2 edge at the end of the second. The first forty minutes of play produced a total of 33 penalties with the Hawks drawing down 18. Both teams stuck strictly to hockey in the third period with each club getting only one penalty until the last minute of play when the third scrap of the night broke out, Most of the Hawk goals came as the result of persistent Checking. The game was only 51 seconds old when the Hawks hit the score sheet, Perry Stover intercepted a Fergus pass inside the blue line and sent a pass to the left side to Brian Bestard who in turn fired across to the right side to Pete, Kleinstiver and the puck was in the,net in a hurry. The second Exeter score came at 16,02 of the first. With the forward lines mixed up due to penalty killing, Ron Lindenfield and Larry Haugh started Pete Glover away at centre ice. He took a couple of strides toward the Fergus blue line and let a blistering slap shot go that handcuffed Don Giles in the Fergus net and dribbled over the goal line. The first Fergus goal was . scored early in the second with the Hawks playing two men short. Bruce Bolger was the goal getter, At 12.18, the Green Machine tied the count at 2 - 2, again on a power play. The Hawks moved back in front about three minutes later with two players from each club in the penalty box. Steve Murley fired in a slap shot from close in on a good second effort in taking the puck away from an opponent. The teams were back at full strength when Fergus scored two quick goals in the first six minutes of the third period to move in front 4 - 3. The tying, winning and in- surance goals for the Hawks came as the result of persistent checking and the ability to take the puck away from the op- position in their own end. Captain Larry Haugh scored the tying goal on a three-way effort with Ron Lindenfield and Steve Murley at 10.38. Only 36 seconds later the Hawks were in front to stay as Pete Glover fired his second goal of the night on a backhander after stealing the puck with help from Bob Rowe. Steve Murley put the icing on the cake at 14,24, stealing the puck deep in Fergus territory and flipping in a quick shot, John Hayter in the Hawks nets continued his superb goal tending with quick glove grabs of-shots which appeared labelled for the net. Hayter's best stop of the night came midway through the first period when Fergus captain Brian Walker broke loose from the blueline in. Hay ter grabbed off a hard shot from only a few feet out as Walker tried to blast the puck past him. More than 300 Exeter fans were among the more than 1,000 in attendance at the Fergus arena. Well finished passing plays and The Petrolia boys posted a similar 6 - 3 win on their home ice Saturday afternoon, With the double weekend win, Petrolia took the series and the cham- pionship three games to one. The Exeter club are still competing for the Shamrock championship having lost the first game of the finals to Lambeth. On Exeter ice, Sunday af- ternoon, Dave Bogart was the top point getter for the Broncos with two goals and an assist, Bogart scored both goals in the first period to give Exeter a 2 - 1 lead as the teams rested for the first time. Brian Mercer assisted on the first Bogart marker with David Cann helping on the second. Petrolia tied the game with the only goal of the second period and broke the game wide open in the final game with four suc- cessful shots while the Broncos could only get one goal back, The final Exeter goal in the third period came from the stick of Brian Mercer with Bogart providing the pass. In Petrolia, Saturday the pattern of play was reversed with the home team taking a 2 -1 lead after the first period of play and extending it to 3 - 1 after the second. Dan Bell notched the first period Exeter goal with the assist going to Steve Skinner. In the third period, Bell scored again from Brian Mercer and Dave Bogart while Bogart registered from Dave Atthill. In OMHA playoffs, Dave After the smoke cleared from Friday's regular schedule of the Exeter Legion mixed dart league, two teams were tied for first place. The Dark Angels and Sharp- shooters have 88 points apiece to lead the league while the BJ's are right behind with 87 points. The Doublers follow in fourth spot with 84 points. In' the mens division Duff Roth- bauer has upped his victory total to 43 while Barb Hearn leads the ladies with 27 wins. This week's scores were: Late Niters 4 — B'J's 1 Dark Angels 3 — Swimmers 2 Doublers 3 — Noisy Ones 2 Itchy Four 3 — Scotties 2 Dart Sharks 3 — Featherflights 2 Winkers 3 D & S's 2 Sharpshooters 3 — Canners 2 Friday's schedule 8 p.m. Sharpshooters vs BJ's BA's vs Doublers Dark Angels vs Featherflights Dart Sharks vs Swimmers 9:30p.m. Itchy Four vs Winkers Late Niters vs Canners Noisy Ones vs Shiphunters D&S's vs Scotties Never over A hockey game is never over until the final whistle sounds. The Philadelphia Flyers will attest to that after their fateful game of Sunday night. The Flyers were playing the Buffalo Sabres Sunday night and needed only a tie to ensure reaching the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western division of the NHL. Gerry Meehan of Buffalo scored on a 35-foot shot with only four seconds left in the game to give the Sabres a one goal decision over Philadelphia. Anybody far soccer Any prospective soccer players in the area will be more than welcome to turn out to the Huron Park athletic field for a practice session. A Huron Park team is being entered in the Ausable Valley soccer league along with two teams from Grand Bend and one each from Parkhill, Ailsa Craig, Forest and Strathroy, The Ausable league has been in operation for about four years and has the reputation of producing a good brand of soccer. Any players wishing to try out for the Huron Park club are asked to attend Sunday's practice or contact Colin Brewer at 293-3166. Bantams even with Huron Park The Exeter and Huron Park bantams met last night, Wed- nesday in the third game of the Shamrock league "B" final. After Exeter won the first game in the series, Huron Park bounced back Wednesday to gain a 3 - 3 tie and force another game. In the first game of the Shamrock midget final, Lucan downed Exeter by a score of 4 - 2. In the bantam game, Exeter moved in front quickly with Ken Pinder scoring at the .12 second mark. Before the first period was over Steve Schroeder had upped the Exeter lead to two goals and Dave Regier scored early in the second. Huron Park hit the scoreboard for the first time at twelve minutes of the second with Randy Funston hitting the mark. Robert Stock scored twice in the third period to put the clubs on even terms and that's the way the game finished. The Lucan midget win over Exeter was led by single goals from the sticks of Dave Crane, Jeff Culbert, Ken Freeman and Dave Smith. Scoring for Exeter were Larry Clarke and Brian Taylor, Brinsley holds lead in Ausable Rec final Lieury bounced back in the Ausable Valley Rec playoffs Sunday night with a 7 - 2 win over Brinsley after the Brinsley club has scored an easy 8 0 victory Wednesday night to move two games up in the best-of-seven final.
