The Exeter bantam hockey
team, their coaches and some
parents spent an enjoyable
weekend in Trenton, Michigan,
The bantams participated in a
doubleheader with the Michigan
team and won both games by
scores of 9 -2 and 6 - 2.
Coach Ray Brooks said the
reception received by the Exeter
contingent was "tremendous."
The coach added, "The
hospitality was terrific and they
made us really feel. at home.
The parents of the Trenton boys,
treated us to a social night,
Saturday night."
The Exeter team presented
their Trenton hosts with an
Exeter Hawks puck and an
autographed bantam stick. In
return, the locals received
pennants,
In Saturday's opening game,
the Exeter team broke the game

Exeter club a 1 - 0 lead. In the
second period, each team scored

chase came back at 8.18 to score
for Hensall but within two
minutes Bob Merner and Bob
Johnston had counted for Zurich
to end the game scoring.

of the first period. About a minute
later Doug Osgood scored

Before the first period ended,
Howard Schenk put the Exeter
club up three goals on an
unassisted effort.
Brian Taylor increased the
Exeter margin to four goals at
the .12 second mark of the third
period before Roberts scored to
put the home club on the
scoreboard for the first time.
At 5.04 Larry Clarke fired his
second successful shot with the
assist going to Brad Roelofson.
Only two minutes later David
Jump scored for Trenton on a
three-way passing combination
with Ken Peacock and Scott. At
the halfway mark of the final
period Randy Regier closed out
the Exeter scoring with passing
help from Brian Taylor.
The Exeter contingent included
manager Bob Osgood, coach
Ray Brooks and his wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Pinder, Mr. and Mrs.
Doug Gould, Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Schenk and Mr. and Mrs. Russ
Clarke,
The coach of the Trenton team
is Gary Flaishans.
In Shamrock playoffs, Exeter
defeated Huron Park 4 - 1 this
week. Randy Regier was the top
Exeter scorer with two goals
while single goals were notched
by John Van Gerwen and Brian
Taylor.
Hensall, Bill Chipchase was the
scoring star with a six goal
performance. The other two
goals for the winners were fired
by Ken Smale.
Fred Lamb was best for Zurich
with a two goal effort while Dick
Bedard, Gerald Schantz, Bob
Merner, and Bob Johnston added
singles.
The Exeter Broncos par-
ticipated in two novice playoff
series this week and broke even
in a pair of games.
In Ontario Minor Hockey
Association Novice "B"
playdowns on Exeter ice Sunday
afternoon, the Broncos edged
Petrolia 3 - 2 to tie their best-of-
five series at a game apiece. The
third game is in Petrolia
Saturday at four o'clock with the
fifth back in Exeter Sunday af-
ternoon at five o'clock.
The first game of the Shamrock
playoffs in Lucan Tuesday night
saw Lambeth down the Exeter
club by a score of 6 -2. The second

The Exeter Hawks continue
with a very impressive playoff
record and are in a good position
in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" semi-
finals.
After losing only their second
game since the playoffs got
underway more than a month
ago, the Hawks bounced back at
the Exeter arena, Tuesday night
to score an impressive 6 - 3 win
over the Fergus Green Machine.
The series is now tied at one
game each as the Fergus club
scored an 8 - 2 victory on their
home ice, Sunday afternoon. The
third game is slated for the
Fergus arena, Friday night at
8.30 with the fourth back in
Exeter Sunday afternoon at two
dclock. The fifth goes to Fergus
Tuesday night with the sixth in
Exeter Thursday, April 6, if
necessary. The seventh game is
scheduled for Fergus the
following night,
The Hawks reached the semi-
final round by disposing of the
Simcoe IGA's in four straight
games. The fourth win was
achieved in Simcoe Wednesday
night by a 5 - 4 count with a rally
in the third period,
The Hawks playoff record now
reads 13 victories in 15 starts. The
only defeats suffered so far in
playoffs by the local juniors were
to Clinton in the first round of
league playoffs and Sunday's loss
in Fergus.
Fergus reached the semi-final
round with two very lopsided wins
over Southampton by scores of 20
- 1 and 21 - 3. After the second
game, OHA officials ended the
series which was originally
slated for a four-out-of-seven set
and sent Fergus against Exeter.
Good effort
Tuesday night's win over
Fergus was achieved by a good
solid team effort by every
member of the Hawks. After a
momentary lapse in the first
couple of minutes of the game,
the Hawks stayed with the fast
skating Fergus club and kept
their high scorers well in hand.
The Hawk forwards turned in
an excellent forechecking and
backchecking game keeping the
Green Machine fairly well
disorganized throughout most of
the game.
Fergus started out quickly and
would have scored two or three
times in the early minutes except
for the sensational saves by John
Hayter in the Exeter nets.
Male curlers
in playoffs
Playoffs are underway this
week in the final draw of the
season of the Exeter men's
curling club.
Gord McCarter guided his rink
to first place in the Monday
division with 561/2 points and
received a bye into the cham-
pionship final.
In semi-final action, Dick
Roelofson's rink winners of
Tuesday play edged, Thursday
winner Mac Hodgert in a sudden
death playoff by an 8 - 7 score
Monday night.
Other members of the
McCarter rink are Ed Miller, Bill
Lamport and Murray Dawson.
Joining Roelofson in the final are
his team-mates Bill Dougall,
Jack Underwood and Grafton
Squire.
Making up the balance of the
Mac Hodgert rink were Jack
Switzer, Harold Foster and Hans
Gerstenkorn.
The only goal of the first period
came when Bob Rowe completed
a three-way passing effort with
Pete Glover and Rob Linclenfield,
The Hawks actually broke the
game wide open with four goals
in the second period while
Fergus were able to score on only
two occasions.
Pete Glover was johnny-on-the-
spot at the .32 mark of the second
period to fire a shot into the
Fergus net from fairly close in,
Assists went to Bob Parsons and
Rob Lindenfield.
Randy Fleming, one of the top
Fergus performers was able to
break clear behind the Exeter
defence and made the score 2 - 1
at 5,35 of the second.
It took the Hawks less than a
minute to get the two goal lead,
back again. This time it was
Brian Bestard with his first of two
successful shots on a play started
by Pete Kleinstiver and Perry
Stover,
The second and last goal of the
second session for the Green
Machine came from the stick of
Steve Schwint near the halfway
mark,
Brian Bestard was back on the
scoreboard at 14.45 firing in a
hard shot on a very sharp angle
from the left side. Perry Stover
carried the puck over the Fergus
blueline and hit Bestard with a
good pass as he was flying down
the left side.
The score went to 5 - 2 in favour
of the Hawks at 18.02. This time
Shane McKinnon blasted a shot
from the point and Ron Lin-
denfield was able to deflect the
puck into the net. Larry Haugh
also assisted.
The two clubs each scored once
in the third period. Bob Parsons
was the Exeter marksman on a
combination effort with Jim.
Guenther and Pete Glover, The
final Fergus goal was shot by
Randy Fleming,
Referee Bill Shaddick called a
total of 29 penalties, all minors
with the Hawks being assessed
14. The attendance was 924.
Good Start
In Fergus Sunday, the Hawks
started off in good style and held
a 2 - 1 lead well past the halfway
mark of the second period,
Pete Glover registered the only
goal of the first period on a play
originated by Bob Rowe. Randy
Fleming with his first of three
goals put the home team on the
board at 2.07 of the second before
Jim Guenther fired in a hard slap
shot on a pass from Bob Parsons
at 7.40.
The Exeter lead held up until
13.07 when Randy Fleming tallied
again. Before the period was over
Bruce Boyd and Sandy Fleming
had upped the Fergus lead to 4 - 2.
Fergus dominated the third
period and scored four unan-
swered goals. Kim Beirnes
scored twice while Randy
Fleming and Steve Schwintadded
singles.
The doctor told him to slow
down, so now he's chasing older
women.
To hockey fans in the area that are not rabid fans
of the Exeter junior Hawks, we would suggest a good
place to spend a couple of hours this Sunday afternoon,
The Hawks currently in the thick of the battle for
the Ontario Junior "D" championship will be meeting
the strong Fergus Green Machine in the fourth game of
a best-of-seven series at the Exeter arena at two o'clock.
This portion of the column was written after the
Hawks gained an impressive 6-3 win over Fergus,
Tuesday night, After suffering an 8-2 beating in Fergus
Sunday, the Hawks showed their typical fortitude in
never giving up and their ability to come from behind,
This year's version of the Hawks is one of the best
junior clubs seen here in quite awhile and the boys need
the full support of the sporting community.
The Fergus team nicknamed, "The Green
Machine" will have a lot to say yet about the Hawks
going all the way to the Ontario title.
The big machine from Fergus is a fast skating
aggregation and three or four of their faster skaters have
a real knack of slipping in behind the opposition
defence.
All we can say is, "If Fergus eliminates the
Hawks, they will certainly know they have been in a real
series."
Best of luck to manager Bob Baynham, coach
Bob White and all the Hawks as they attempt to bring
the Ontario title to Exeter.
GO HAWKS GO.
Figure skating season ending
A very successful year for the Exeter figure
skating club comes to a close within the next week. The
actual skating ends Tuesday,. April 4 with the final test
day when most of the youthful members of the club try
tests of varying degrees.
Saturday night of this week, the club is
sponsoring a fund-raising dance at the Exeter Legion
hall. Music is being supplied by the Bluetones.
Area hockey school
Of interest to many young hockey players in the
area is the recent announcement that a hockey school
will again be held at the Huron Park arena this summer.
This year's project is being called the Huron
Summer Hockey School and the staff includes five top
notch hockey and physical education instructors.
Ron Mason, who was on the staff at the hockey
school for the past two summers will be in charge this
year and will be bringing back Bill Mahoney and Brian
Gilmour, who were also here in previous years.
Mason, a former junior hockey star in Seaforth is
now head coach at Lake Superior State College in Sault
Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Bill Mahoney is head coach at McMaster
University in Hamilton and has done extensive research
into hockey testing and is a past president of the
Canadian Hockey Coaches Association.
Coaching experience at McMaster and McGill
Universities gives Brian Gilmour all the qualifications
necessary to be invaluable to a hockey school of this
nature.
We ran into Ron Mason at the Young Canada
tournament in Goderich last week and he told about his
plans for the upcoming hockey school.
Each boy will receive three hours of ice
instruction daily with an additional hour and a half in
specialized conditioning exercises for hockey.
Mason said his school will be putting special
emphasis on shooting ability and each boy will receive
personalized skating instruction.
Four weekly sessions will be operating at the
Huron Park arena from July 17 to August 12.
Correction
On these sports pages in last week's issue a picture
of the winning rink in the ladies' curling club bonspiel
was shown. The accompanying information said all
proceeds would go to Bunny Bundle.
That was incorrect. The South Huron Association
for the Mentally Retarded will be receiving the complete
proceeds.
While talking about the Mentally Retarded, we
would like to tell our readers about a very important
sporting event slated for Exeter Community Park on
Saturday, June 3.
A summer Olympics with all track and field
events included will bring retarded children from many
parts in Ontario. We will bring further information on
this event as time progresses.
Broncos break even
in novice playoffs
minutes remaining in the game
on a pass from Brian Mercer.
The two teams traded first
period goals with Dan Bell
registering for Exeter on a pass
from Bogart. In the second
session, Bogart scored the only
goal on an unassisted effort.
Petrolia tied the score at 2 - 2 at
the 6.15 mark of the third period.
Doug Hoffman was in goal for
the Broncos and turned in an
outstanding performance.
The only Exeter goals in the 6 -
2 loss to Lambeth were notched in
the first and third periods. Jeff
Fuller was the goal getter in the
initial period with Dave Bogart
assisting.
The third period score came on
a three-way passing combination
with Steve trail finishing off a
play started by Preston Dearing
and Jeff Puller.
The Zurich Flyers won the
South Huron intermediate hockey
league championship Friday
night in Zurich by downing the
Hensall Cascadians 7 - 4 in the
seventh and deciding game.
Hensall had forced the seventh
game by pulling out an 8 - 6 win on
their home ice, Wednesday night.
The game was close from start
to finish. Zurich took a 2 - 0 lead
after the first period only to have
Hensall come back with three
unanswered goals in the second
period.
The Flyers tied the count at the
2.41 mark of the third period and
then took advantage of a five
minute Hensall penalty to score
four times and salt the game
away.
Paul Corriveau and Dick
Bedard were the Zurich goal
getters in the first period while
Charlie Schwalm, Bill Taylor and
Ken Smale scored in the middle
frame for the Cascadians,
Fred Lamb scored for the
Flyers on an unassisted effort at
2.41 of the third period to tie the
score at 3 - 3.
