'Patience is growing into
a fun-packed performance
QUESTION: What makes
Patience' grow in beauty and
enchantment?
ANSWER: Patience.
Sound crazy? Well, when
'Patience is an ambitous Gilbert
and Sullivan operetta comprising
the voices of over 40 people, it not
only takes the patience of Job to
carry it off but it also demands
tong hours of hard work, per-
severance and an over abun-
dance of enthusiasm,
The Huronia Singers, under the
spirited direction of Mrs. Roland
McCaffrey, have all these in-
gredients and more. If the show
they plan to produce at the
Exeter District High School,
April 6, 7 arid 8, isn't a smash it's
not because they haven't thrown
themselves into it lock, stock and
barrel.
Practising commenced last
October; it's been two times a
week since February. And the
funny thing about it is the per-
formers say they've enjoyed the
long rehearsals and the steady
grind of learning lines and music
that makes 'Patience' one of
Gilbert and Sullivan's most
brilliant operettas.
As a matter of fact they've
sometimes enjoyed it too much.
Their director has more than
once had to rap them on the
knuckles for breaking up over the
many zany situations that occur
in the production.
Vivacious, bouncy, Marion
McCaffrey says, "I had to let the
cast know right from the start
how nasty and snarly I can be. In
producing a show of this kind
there had to be
discipline . lines must be
learned and deadlines must be
set,"
"No, no," she's apt to thunder
from the sidelines, "You missed
your cue. Start again. Louder.
Sing out. Pick it up. Look
miserable. Too slow, Come on,
come on, move into U.!"
Despite her sergeant-major
approach and her demands for
better and better performance
Marion says she's happy with the
way the production is moving.
"It's growing well and flowing
together with ever increasing
sureness,-
She's positive the Huronia
Singers will have a hit on their
hands opening night.
"At one time I may have
wondered if I'd bitten off more
than we could chew," she laughs,
"But not anymore! They (the
singers) are a tremendous group
of people and they're giving this
operetta everything they've got,"
Not only the singers are
working hard. There's Mrs.
Dorothy Wildfong, the pianist,
who's been on deck for every
rehearsal;there's also the people
who work quietly behind the
scenes building and painting sets
and properties, selling tickets
and the hundred and one other
odd jobs that make for a suc-
cessful production.
Rather than try to make
costumes it was decided to rent
them from a Toronto company
for the nights of the performance.
The plot of this Gilbert and
Sullivan fantasy is as jam-packed
with fun and catchy tunes as any
of the other operettas these two
geniuses wrote. It's all about
love and poets, soldiers and love
sick maidens . . well, no need to
tell you.
See it for yourself.
