In the opening game on Exeter

broke the game wide open with
five goals in the second period,
Four of the goals came within the
first four minutes of play.
The first period score was even
at 1 - 1 although the Simcoe club
missed a lot of good scoring
opportunities, mostly because of
the excellent work of John Hayter
in the Exeter nets. Hayter

fare much better. The first game
of the best-of-five series in
Petrolia Saturday was won by the
home team by a score of 6 - 1.
The second game in the series
is slated for the Exeter arena
Sunday afternoon at 4.30 with the
third in Petrolia Saturday, April
1.
The Broncos will be meeting
Lambeth in a best-of-five series
for the Shamrock league
In last week's column we said the upcoming week
would be a very busy one and mentioned some of the
events that were on tap.
It indeed was and still is. Minor hockey teams are
travelling to all parts of the province to compete in the
some 22 tournaments being played during the spring
break.
As far as the Goderich Young Canada event is
concerned most area teams have already been
eliminated. The only club still in the running is from
Hensall and they see action Friday morning at 10:30,
When listing the Exeter teams last week we
missed the mites. The Exeter mites will be in Listowel
Friday at 11:30 to meet Delhi and the following Friday,
March 31 they travel to Dorchester to play against
London East Optimists in a twelve noon contest.
While in Goderich for a short time Tuesday
morning watching the Exeter pee wees in action we ran
into an old friend Stan Stokes of London. Stan,
connected with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association
for many years is completing his sixteenth year as
referee-in-chief at the Goderich tournament.
As a rule, referees don't get too much praise for
their work. The more than 60 men in the striped shirts
that handle the Young Canada event every year deserve
a lot of credit. They come from all parts of Ontario in
addition to Montreal and Winnipeg.
The referees come to Goderich at their own
expense and offer their services free of charge. The next
time you feel like booing a referee remember he isn't a
bad fellow after all.
Officials of hockey are continually trying to
improve the rules but they won't be able to make
officiating much better until they put the referees in the
crowd. That seems to be the best place to call a game.
Off to a flying start
The Exeter Hawks are off to a flying start in the
Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" playdowns and
should go well the rest of the way, although the
competition is bound to get tougher.
While the Simcoe series is far from over, the
Hawks enjoy a two game lead as this is being written
early in the week. At the moment five other teams are
still in the running for provincial honors.
Southampton, a team from the Western Ontario
Athletic Association is a direct entry to the OHA and is
expected to meet the winner of the Exeter-Simcoe
series. Other sets going on involve Fergus and Alliston
and Lakefield and Bancroft.
Good week for
local minor teams
Three of Exeter's minor
hockey teams competing in
Shamrock playoffs enjoyed a
good week.
The pee wees, thanks to a five
goal splurge in the last period
downed Lambeth 6 - 5, the ban-
tams trounced Dorchester by a 9
2 count while the midgets scored
a double victory over Huron Park
by scores of 4 - 2 and 9 - 0.
In the pee wee contest. Brian
Clarke completed a three-way
passing play with Brad Taylor
and Perry Pooley to score the
winning goal with less than a
minute to go in the game.
Clarke had scored the tying
goal only a minute earlier. Paul
Pooley also scored two goals in
the third period to help the
Exeter cause. The other two
goals for the winners were
chalked up by Eugene Clarke and
Bill Deters.
Captain Brian Taylor and Brad
Roelofson each fired two goals to
lead the Exeter bantam win.
Chipping in with one goal each
were Paul Brooks, Ken Pinder,
Tom Hayter, Larry Clarke and
Marty Martens.
Brian Taylor and Wayne
Regier each scored two goals to
take care of all of the Exeter
midget scoring in the 4 - 2 win
over Huron Park.
Scoring for Huron Park was
taken care of by Brian Price and
Matt Muller.
Lieury reaches finals
with overtime victory
It took two overtime periods'
but Lieury managed to edge Ailsa
Craig 6 - 5 Sunday night to move
into the finals of the Ausable
Valley Rec hockey league.
Bob Robinson's goal at 11,53 of
the second overtime period
allowed Lieury to win the
deciding game of the best-of-five
series and move against Brinsley
for the league championship.
Lieury kept their playoff hopes
alive with a 5 - 2 win Wednesday
night.
Brinsley third place finishers
in the league standings defeated
the defending champion Shipka
Bulldogs in three straight games.
Lieury placed last in the four
team league.
The first game of the best-of-
five finals will be played at the
championship. The first game
goes at the Exeter arena,
Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m.
In Brampton Sunday, the
Exeter club scored three goals in
the third period to post their
opening series 4 - 1 win over
Acton, The Acton team was
replacing Meaford which
dropped out of the tournament.
Brian Mercer was the big gun
for the Broncos coming up with a
three goal performance. Mercer
scored unassisted goals in the
first and third period and also
counfed on a three-way passing
play with Dan Bell and Larry
Dawson.
The other Exeter goal was fired
by 13ell with Mercer and Steve
Skinner assisting.
The only Exeter goal in the 5 -1
loss to Acton came from the stick
of Dave Bogart on a pass from
Larry Dawson late in the third
period,
Miss many chances
The first championship game
against Petrolia saw the Exeter
youngsters miss a lot of good
scoring opportunities, especially
in the early minutes of the game.
Dave Bogart was the only
Exeter marksman with a suc-
cessful shot in the last minute of
play in the game,
Big moves
in dart loop
A couple of teams in the Exeter
Legion mixed dart league have
made big moves up in the stan-
ding in the last couple of weeks.
The BJ's who moved into first
place a week ago have not ex-
tended their first place lead to
four points with a season total of
86.
The Dark Angels with a big
four point night have moved into
the runner-up spot with 82 points,
one more than the Sharpshooters,
league leaders for most of the
season. The Doublers follow in
fourth place with 80 points to
their credit.
In the most games won
department, Duff Rothbaeur
continues to lead the male dar-
ters with 41. wins while Barb

The Exeter Hawks with their
tenth consecutive win in playoffs
at the Exeter arena Tuesday
night have taken a big three
games to nothing lead over the
Simcoe IGA's in the first Ontario
Hockey Association Junior "I)"
playoff round.
The Hawks edged the IQA'S 3 -2
Tuesday night on Ron Lin-
denfield's goal at 5.54 of overtime
to give the local club a
stranglehold on the series.
Exeter took the first game on
home ice Friday night by a 9 - 3
count and won 8 - 4 back in
Simcoe Sunday night,
The fourth game was played in
Simcoe last night, Wednesday. If
a fifth is necessary it will be
played back in Exeter Friday
night at 8.30.
Come to life late
After a slow start Tuesday
night, the Hawks came to life in
the third period and completely
dominated play in the overtime
session.
The Simcoe club only managed
three shots on the Exeter net in
the extra period and all came in
the latter stages with the Hawks
playing a man short.
The winning goal came directly
from a face-off in the Simcoe
zone. Centre Larry Haugh got the
puck after a scramble on the
draw and slid it to Lindenfield
waiting in front of the net com-
pletely uncovered and the big
right winger took plenty of time
and flipped the puck into the net
to send most of the crowd of 949
into a roar.
The first period was scoreless
as both teams had trouble getting
a sustained attack going and
when they did both goalies were
on their toes to keep their nets
clean,
The second session was only 16
seconds old when Pete Klein-
stiver scored from almost behind
the net, He flipped the puck out in
front and it hit Simcoe defen-
ceman Don Dobie and bounced
into the net.
It took Simcoe only about a
minute to tie the score as Barry
Laplante broke loose at the
blueline and moved in alone to
score a neat goal.
A good passing play provided
the second Exeter goal of the
game at 6.46 of the third period
with Larry Haugh mo, ing in
front of the net to convert a long
pass from the right side from Ron
Lindenfield.
The tying goal for Simcoe to
send the game into overtime also
came on a good passing com-
bination. Don Kendrick was on
the firing end of the tying shot.
Goalie Gary Robinson of
Simcoe turned in an excellent
performance in goid particularly
in the overtime period as the
HawksTA,s swarmed all over the G
At the other c nd of the rink,
John Hayter of the Hawks,
although not called on to make as
many stops as his Simcoe
counterpart did make the big
stops when necessary.
Referee Don Clarke of London
called 17 penalties with the
Hawks drawing down nine.
One Big Period
In the first two games of the
Simcoe series, the Hawks used
one big period to gain enough
victory.
sryto pick up the margin of
Sunday night in Simcoe with a
capacity crowd of over 1,400 fans
looking on, the Hawks took an
early lead, faltered a bit and
came on with three quick goals in
the last five minutes of play to
gain the 8 - 4 decision.
The only two goals of the first
period were notched by the
Hawks. Bob Rowe fired the first
on a pass from Pete Glover with
the game little more than a
minute old. With three minutes
remaining Steve Murley scored
with Larry Haugh assisting and
the Hawks were out in front 2 - 0.

The five district hockey teams
that saw early action in the an-
nual Young Canada pee wee
tournament at Goderich failed to
get past their first day at the
lakeport town.
The first team to see action,
Huron Park was blanked 7 - 0 by
Seaforth. The next club, Grand
Bend fared a little better. The
Bend club downed Brussels 6 - 1
in the first game but were edged 7
- 4 by Tiverton in their second
start.
The Wingham pee wees scored
a 5 - 1 win over Lucan and the
Exeter Legion Auxilary pee wees
were blanked 6 - 0 Tuesday
morning by the defending
champs from Hespeler.
The only other club from the
area in the running is from
Hensall and they will see action
Friday morning at 10.30 when
they meet Six Nations,
In the first Grand Bend contest,
Jim Venner scored three times to
lead the win, Chipping in with
single goals were Cameron Haist,
Ted Stanlake and Tom Thomas,
Cameron Heist with a hat trick
was best for Grand Bend in the
loss to Tiverton. Ted Stanlake
registered the fourth counter.
Gary Love was the line goal
getter for Zurich in the 2 - 1 loss to
Tiverton.
Exeter arena, Sunday night at
eight o'clock,
Sunday's deciding Lieury -
Ailsa Craig game was close from
the opening whistle with never
more than one goal separating
the two clubs.
The score was tied 2 - 2 after the
first period with Jim Shipway
and Joe Regier counting for Ailsa
Craig and Murray Dixon and
Paul Glavin replying for Lieury.
Shipway was back with the only
goal of the second period to put
Ailsa Craig in front 3 - 2. The
procedure was reversed in the
third session with Dave Collins
scoring for Craig and Sonny
Slater and Stan Harwood
counting for Lieury.
In the first overtime period,
Lewis Slater fired what appeared
for a long time to be the winning
goal in the early minutes but
Wayne Griffith scored for Ailsa
Craig with only four seconds
remaining to even the score at 5 -
5 and set the stage for Robinson's
sudden-death overtime counter.
Good third period
Three unanswered goals in the
third period allowed Lieury to
post Wednesday's 5 - 2 win over
Ailsa Craig to square the series at
two games apiece.
Stan Harwood, Murray Dixon
and Wayne Ropp were the Lieury
marksmen in the third period.
Scoring earlier were Sonny Slater
and Paul Hodgins.
Both Ailsa Craig goals were
picked up by Charlie Eedy.
Ladies to take over
Two of Lucan's minor hockey clubs will see
action in what should turn out to be an interesting
exhibition doubleheader at the Lucan arena next
Monday night, March 27..
While the two teams will actually be participating
in a pair of games with their fathers, the mothers will be
in the limelight.
Mothers will be undertaking the duties of
handling all the coaching and in charge of refereeing.
In the pee wee contest, Donna Freeman who
should have gained some coaching knowledge from her
husband Jim will be in the boys players box shouting
directions.
On the other side of the ice surface, Lois Stanley
vti'." nave a much tougher chore in trying to organize the
lather*: a winning combination. How about that,
Clare'
i he pee wee game which will get underway at
seven o'clock will be refereed by Marion l3enn and
Helen Lewis,
For the bantam game, scheduled an hour later,
referees are still needed and volunteers will be more
than welcome. All you need to qualify is be a mother of
one of the Lucan bantams and have reasonable eyesight.
Here's a chance for some of the ladies to get even
with either their sons or husbands. Incidentally, get even
in a legal way.
The bantams will be coached by Marie Nickles
with help from Jack Tutty who will not be in action on
the ice because of a shoulder injury. You guessed it.
Coaching for the fathers will be Jean Tutty.
Here is a good opportunity for Lucan and area
residents to have an enjoyable couple of hours and help
a good cause, All proceeds go to Bunny Bundle.
Plenty of skill
Two events we attended in Exeter Saturday
certainly attracted plenty of talented sportsmen, We're
referring to the Exeter Legion dart tournament and the
open men's cash bonspiel at the Exeter curling club.
Congratulations go to Paul Coates and his local
rink in winning the bonspiel against top notch
competition. The calibre of curling was high throughout
the day.
The winner of the second draw, but With a lower
point total than the Coates rink was Doug Grant of
London. Grant showed his skill on the final shot with a
perfect double take-out.
At the Exeter Legion, the dart throwing was also
of excellent calibre and a team from London won the
championship for the third straight time.
Another tourney
When talking earlier of hockey tournaments we
forgot about the seventh annual Knights of Columbus
event slated for the Seaforth arena, Saturday and
Sunday of this week, With junior and senior divisions,
the tournament is open to all separate schools within
the Father Stephen Eckert Council district.
Teams from Mount Cannel coached by Bill Regier
will be competing in the junior and senior classes,
