"Ontario farmers should take
advantage of the newly ac-
celerated depreciation rates for
grain storage and drying
equipment," Gordon Hill,
President of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture said in
Toronto Monday. "We need more
corn storage by next fall to avoid
the problems we encountered last
year."
A large corn crop and a
shortage of storage space
combined last fall to force corn
prices to unprofitable levels.
The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture asked the federal
government at that time to ac-
celerate depreciation rates on
grain storage and drying
equipment to encourage farmers
to build more storage. Last week
Agriculture Minister H. A. (Bud)
Olson announced new rates for
on-farm grain storage and drying
equipment (maximum of $15,000
write off a year), as well as
storage and drying facilities at
primary elevators and process
elevators in eastern Canada,
"These new rates will allow
farmers tq write off the capital
costs of new equipment in four
years," Hill said. "They apply
