The Zurich club scered five times in the first period with only a single reply from the Ceseadiens in Friday's second game of the series, Glen Overholt, Fred Lamb, Fart Wagner and Kevin McKinnon each scored two goals ta lead. the Zurich scoring attack. Meet Petrolia for championship A lot of boys in the area shouldn't have too much- spare time on their hands next week despite the winter break from school. Most hockey teams have reached playoff rounds and many district teams will be competing in various tournaments, First of all the Exeter junior Hawks will be getting roiling in the Ontario Hockey Association semi-final playoffs. The Hawks will be at home Friday night to either the Caledonia Corvairs or the Simcoe IGA's, As this is being written the two teams are deadlocked at three games apiece and the seventh and deciding game was played Wednesday night in Caledonia. The second game of the series will probably go in Caledonia or Simcoe with the third back here Tuesday night. In tournaments, the Exeter pee wees will be in Goderich, the novice Broncos in Brampton and the midgets in Hespeler. While not entered in a tournament coach Ray Brooks is taking his bantam team to Trent, Michigan for a weekend series, The novice team plays their first game in. Bramp- ton, Sunday, the pee wees go to Goderich for a Tuesday game at 8:10 a.m. and the midgets travel to Hespeler Friday, Also participating in the Young Canada event at Goderich will be area teams from Huron Park, Lucan, Hensall, Zurich and Grand Bend. Tourney at home While most of the action is taking place on foreign fronts, an interesting tournament will be staged at the Exeter arena, Thursday, March 23. It's the annual Lake Huron Zone Recreation Directors bantam and midget tourney. Teams from Goderich, St. Marys, Kincardine, Listowel, Chatsworth, Mount Forest, Owen Sound, Meaford and Kilsyth will be in for the full day of activities. Action gets underway at eight o'clock in the morning with a total of 13 games slated. Spectators are more than welcome. There is no admission charge. The Zurich Flyers won two games during the week to jump into a. lead in the Senth Huron hockey league finals over the EIensall .Cascadians. After Rensall won the first game by an impressive 14-7 seem-, Zurich bounced back to gain a 11.-4 victory, Friday night and eked out a .5-4 decision.. Sunday afternoon, The fourth game was played at Hensall last night, Wednesday with the fifth game slated for the Zurich arena. Friday night at 8130. Overcome deficit Four unanswered goals in the last half of the game allowed Zurich to pick up the 5-4 Sunday win. Rensall jumped into a 3-1 lead after the first period of play and scored another goal before the midway mark of the second was reached. Chuck Dalrymple, Craig Chapman and Bill Chipchase Broncos in zone final The Exeter Broncos have moved into the final round of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Novice "B" grouping, After disposing of St. Marys and Stoneybrook in a round-robin series, the Broncos will meet Petrolia for the provincial zone championship. Shortly before press time Wednesday, Exeter coach Ron Bogart said arrangements for only the first game had been completed, The Broncos will travel to Petrolia for the first game at four o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Exeter club is involved in the Brampton novice tournament next week and the second game of the Petrolia series may not be played until Sunday March 26. To reach the zone finals, the Broncos defeated St, Marys twice and split a pair of games with Stoneybrook. The locals won Brinsley in Ausable final the series when St. Marys defeated Stoneybrook to give Exeter the best record with three wins. Wednesday night the Broncos blanked Stoneybrook 3-0, they trounced St. Marys 9-1 Thursday and dropped a 5-2 decision to Stoneybrook, Friday night. Dave Bogart, Brian Mercer and Steve Skinner scored one goal each to lead the Exeter 3-0 win over St. Marys. Steve Wells turned in a strong performance in goal to gain the shut-out, Against Stoneybrook, Bogart and Mercer each picked up a hat trick. Dan Bell was next in line with two goals while Doug Brooks fired a single successful shot. This time it was Doug Hoffman with an excellent effort in the nets holding St. Marys to a single goal. In Shamrock Saturday afternoon in Lucan, the Broncos scored a decisive 12-2 win over Dorchester in the second last game of the regular schedule of the Shamrock league. This Saturday, the Exeter club meets Lambeth in the final regular game to decide the league championship. Dave Bogart was again the scoring star for the Broncos, this time with a four goal effort, Steve Skinner was next in line with a hat trick performance while Dan Bell, Preston Dearing, Wayne Parsons, Doug Brooks and Dave Atthill notched single goals. Off to Brampton The Broncos travel to Bramp- ton Sunday to participate in the opening round of the annual tournament. The first opposition in a two game total goals series will be Meaford. The games are scheduled for four o'clock in the afternoon and nine in the evening. Brinsley blanked Shipka 6-0 Sunday night to advance to the championship series, In the other half of the semi-finals, Ailsa Craig downed Lieury 9-4 to take a two game to one lead in a similar series. The fourth game was played last night, Wednesday at the Exeter arena. Jim Thompson's two goal performance was best for the Brinsley club. Checking in with single goals were Jack Glavin, Wes Hodgson, Bob Hodgson and Jack Conlin. A three goal effort by Dave Collins led Ailsa Craig to their 9-4 win over Lieury. Next in line with two goals each were Larry Dobbinson and Bob Donaldson while Charlie Eedy and Gwyn Griffiths added singles. The Hawks will be at home to either the Cale- donia Corvairs or Simcoe IGA's in the first game of a best-of-seven series, Caledonia and Simcoe were tied at three games apiece and the seventh and deciding game was played in Caledonia, Wednesday night. The second game of the series is expected to be play- ed in Caledonia or Simcoe Sunday with the third back in Exeter Tuesday night. Inch 261) 2 Well done, fellows Our congratulations go out to the members of the Exeter curling club who turned in fine performances at the weekend Tartan curling bonspiel at the Highland club in London. Jim Hewitt of the local curling club led his rink to the final round losing the championship game by a close 6-4 count to Bob Anderson of the host Highland club. The Hewitt foursome eliminated some top notch competition on their way to the finals. Falling to the Exeter curlers were Bob Johnston of Highland, the Ostrander rink of Tillsonburg, Jim Fleet of Sarnia and Hank Bysinski of London. Completing the Hewitt rink were fellow Exeter curling club members Jerry Finnen, Jerry Smith and Neil Hemmingway. Another Exeter rink went to the finals of the second event of the three-day bonspiel. Pres Levier was the skip along with Doug Parsons, Gord McTavish and Gerry Prout. One of the biggest events at the Exeter curling club this year will be held here Saturday. It's the first Exeter men's invitational bonspiel with top notch curlers from Western Ontario in attendance. In action from London will be rinks skipped by Doug Grant, Bill Young and Kai Stub. The following local businesses and curling enthu- siasts will be assisting the club in operation of the bonspiel: Bank of Nova Scotia, Mather's Garage, Conklin Lumber, The Derby Dip and Chuckwagon, C.A. McDowell, Seldon Fuels, Don Taylor Motors, Dashwood Industries, John Burke Insurance, Gerald Prout, Jack Urquhart and Lee Webber. Win for former Seaforth star For the third time since he took over as hockey coach at Lake Superior State College in Northern Michigan, Ron Mason has guided his club to a college championship. Mason, a former junior star at Seaforth assumed the coaching duties of the Lakers in 1967-68. The Sharpshooters tied with the leaders a week ago have fallen into second spot. They have 79 points to their credit. The Dark Angels follow in third place with 78 points while the Doublers have 77 points, good for fourth position. No change took place in the individual statistics. Duff Roth- bauer has amassed 39 wins to lead the men while Barb Hearn has 22, best for the ladies. First name of best-of:seven SerieS Dart tourney The 9th annual mixed dart tournament sponsored by the Exeter Legion will be staged Saturday of this week at the local Legion Hall. A total of $500 in prizes will be up for grabs along with trophies from Carling Breweries. The tourney which is expected to draw entrants from all parts of Western Ontario will get underway at eleven o'clock in the morning and • is expected to run well into the evening. The cash prizes for the winners are quite substantial. For mixed doubles the top prize is $70 while the team award is $100. Norm Ferguson is tournament chairman and entries can be sent to him at Box 242, Exeter. Spectators are welcome to watch the darters in action and an open dance will follow the tournament. Hockey history on record This may sound like free advertising but we would like to tell our readers about two new records which are available and cover most of the memorable moments in the National Hockey league over the years. The two long playing records, running close to two hours begin with Foster Hewitt and the world's first hockey broadcast in 1923, Also on record are opening night at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931, the first NHL penalty shot in 1935, the first all-star game and the scoring of famous goals by numerous players. 'These records sell for $6.98 and can be obtained from the Hockey News at 1434 St. Catherine Street West in Montreal, Two of the three Exeter minor clubs in Shamrock hockey league playoffs saw action during the week. The bantams scored a 9-2 win over Dorchester while the Exeter midgets dropped an 8-3 decision to Lucan. Brad Roelofson and Brian Taylor each scored twice to pace the Exeter bantam victory against Dorchester. Adding one goal apiece were Paul Brooks, Ken Pinder, Randy Regier, Larry Clarke and Marty Martens. In an exhibition game, the same Exeter bantam club edged Zurich 3-1. Brian Taylor's two goal effort was Exeter's best while John Van Gerwen added the third counter. Paul Robinson was the lone Zurich marksmen. Another exhibition tilt saw the Exeter mites defeat Zurich 4-3. David Bell with a hat trick led the locals with Rick Lindenfield scoring once.
