No, he is not a travelling' salesman. He is a country and western singer, composer and Promoter. He entertains in clubs from Sarnia to Thunder Bay. Nor is this the full extent of his travels. He just returned from a nine week tour of the Far East, during which time he travelled 10,000 miles and entertained American troops in Okinawa, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan and the Philip- pines. He met and played to all ranks, from privates to Generals ProMotions, lasted from December 20to February zo, Had things gone as planned, it would have been five weeks longer, but because of President Nixon's, visit to China, Slim was unable to get a visa into Guam. The im- migration offices were so busy with details of the President's trip and so far behind with their regular work that they ceased operations in that department. and he talked to. a great many servicemen. Tie said to a man, they believe that they are doing a necessary and worthwhile job, but they also have their departure dates down to the number of months, days, hours and minutes. He performed at at least 20 different clubs in Okinawa alone, some as many as three times, so his itinerary was full, Because he was moving .front place to place so quickly only two out of the 17 letters written by his wife ever reached him. To. complicate things, there were five postal strikes while he was there. The tour, arranged by Far East Little old timer Slim was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and came to Ontario in 1947, when the company for which he worked transferred him to Hamilton. Ile started entertaining much earlier than this, Develop own curriculum preferred by local teachers SLIM GORDON, country singer entertainer, spends most of his time on the road touring the various clubs in the country. He sees many places in his travels but says Exeter is his favorite town, Mr. Gordon has just returned from entertaining U.S. troops in the Far East. T-A photo a friend painted a picture of his impression of the preacher,. which ndw hangs in the Gordon's living room. Slim has played clubs in London, Stratford, Sarnia and Seaforth, In fact, he met his wife, the former Lydia Roelof of Exeter, when he was playing the Queen's Hotel in Seaforth in 1964. They were married in 1966, and now have a son Raymond, who is four. Mrs. Gordon travelled with her husband for five years after they were married, but Raymond got tired of being on the road, so they now live permanently in Exeter. "It takes a special kind of woman to be married to an en- tertainer", said Slim, "because to make it pay, you have to travel so much." I'm one of the only entertainers I know who has a happy marriage," What next? Slim has no immediate plans for the future. "I'd like to get off the road", he said, "so I could spend more time with my family", But the job situation is such that he doesn't know if it is possible, Many clubs that used to have entertainment all week now have it only two or three nights a week, he explained. "That's why you have to go on the road to make a living, It would be a lot more in- teresting if you could take your family," lie said. Slim would like to get into promotion again, an "interesting and challenging job, something you can get your teeth into", but instead he said he would probably be on the road again in a few weeks. When asked if he had any favorite towns or clubs in which he has performed, Slim un- derstandably said not really; "Exeter's my favorite town," "standing invitation" to return. He has performed in another country music capital, Wheeling, West Virginia, and also did a television show with Pee Wee King and his 18 piece country swing band in Louisville, Ken- tucky. Singing is not the only life Slim Gordon has known. For six years he was a radio announcer at CKLB in Oshawa, both reading the news and hosting a country and western music show, He had had no previous ex- perience when he approached CKL,B, but as the result of his en- deavor he was awarded the Mr, D,J., U,S,A, title in 1962. This is an honor given to the top country and western disc jockey of the year. He was originally recommended for the award by country star Skeeter Davis, who heard his show in Oshawa, Only four Canadians have everwon this award. In addition to the promotions he did in Oshawa, he also writes and records his own songs and has made three albums. The last one, recorded with Allied Records of Toronto, and called "The Ungrateful Son", sold 24,000 copies which is good for Canada. There are five original compositions on this album, including the title song. One of them is called "Pistol Packin Preacher". In honor of it, He got his first "break" from a "Raleigh Man". The salemen heard Slim sing and told his wife, who was the staff pianist at the local radio station, CJLS in Yarmouth, The disc jockey subsequently auditioned him and thus, Slim Gordon had his first radio show when he was only seven years old. lie was billed as the "Little Old-Timer" arid had to sit on the announcer's lap so he could sing into the desk microphone, Slim had his first band when he was 15. They used to rent country halls, sponsor their own dances and make six or seven dollars each for the night. Albums and award Things have changed con- siderably since that time, Slim has been on the road for about 10 years and has travelled thousands of miles. He had a back-up group until 1968, but during the beer strike, clubs couldn't afford to pay bands. So on the advice of Ms agent he temporarily became a single act, He found, however, that he en- joyed working alone. Besides, " a single can make as much as a duo because he is doing the same job", said Slim. Mr. Gordon has made several guest appearances to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and has a 03' Wooden. "It allows much broader development and permits the teacher to utilize the special skills he or she possesses," Murphy, however, noted that could be the "great weakness" in the system, He said in grade 9, for instance, students came from a variety of "feeder schools" to a central high school with a variety of skills and special interests. Murphy stressed the need for the "core" which would be common to all, Mrs. Gordon Pullman of Seaforth Public School aed Ken Scott, Brussels Public School, summarized some of the present work being done in the county toward curriculum development. Others on the committee were Superintendent Jim Coulter and Trustee Don McDonald. There were 13 recom- mendations set down by the committee for study and possible implementation by the board' of education in Huron, They are: 1. That departments within each secondary school increase their efforts in the direction of curriculum development with special emphasis on relating techniques of teaching to content and upon other aspects of curriculum other than content; 2. That teaching staffs spend more time in curriculum evaluation, This should include some attempt to determine the degree of success of secondary school graduates from Huron in post secondary education, in business and in industry; 3. That subject council be formed and operate as suggested. 4. That Secondary School department heads of each subject hold regular meetings for curriculum development pur- poses; 5. That all teachers of a subject at the secondary level meet occasionally for curriculum development purposes; 6, That a curriculum Development Committee be formed in each school in the county; 7. That curriculum guidelines for Kindergarten to Grade 6 be completed. K. to 6 curriculum should emphasize the basic skills — reading, writing, arithmetical skills, spelling, etc. B.That county-wide meetings for teachers in special areas continue. 9. That teachers of each grade K to 6 meet regularly to evaluate and develop curriculum as noted in section 8. 10, That more preparatory work be done before special courses, such as music and art, prior to offering such courses. For example, we should do more than simply place the name of a subject on a subject selection sheet. Curriculum and facilities need to be considered as well as staff, 11. That some of the time recommended by the Professional Development Committee be spent in curriculum development; 12. That consideration be,given to freeing for limited periods of time certain members of the county teaching staff to review curriculum in a defined area arid then hold sessions with the teachers concerned. Such sessions should concentrate on curriculum improvement. 13. That nothing in our report suggests that we should aim at a uniformity of curriculum among the schools of the county, Some agreement on general areas and objective and upon some core material is desirable but con- siderable freedom to interpret Department guidelines and to develop cow Ses should remain with the local school, must be done in this direction, it was shown. Murphy said that when curriculum development is considered, there area series of steps which must be followed. Teachers must consider the rationale of the course, the aims and objectives of the course, the content, the textbooks available, reference materials, the costs involved, the methodology and techniques of instruction, the qualities of the teacher who will give the course and the steps involved in obtaining approval for the course. Murphy also talked about the need for evaluation of courses. He spoke about almost daily evaluation where the teacher would assess whether or not the part of the course taught that day had met the aims and objectives set down. "Every day should be evaluation day in the classroom," said Murphy, "but once a year or possibly once a term or semester, there should be an overview of the work to date, A department could profitably set aside a whole week, either in June or spread out through the year,' to evaluate its total program, possibly on the basis of one day per grade level. In some instances, members of another department, or parents, or outside consultants might be invited to attend." Joe Wooden, principal of South Huron DHS, chairman of the committee, told the board it was possible for courses to develop in one school which were not being taught in any other school in the same county. "Yet all courses would be under the department's guidelines because the guidelines are so broad," Wooden said. "Teachers approve of the present system," observed USED CARS A group of Huron ,County elementary and secondary school teachers who have been studying curriculum development for presentation to the board of education, told trustees Monday afternoon in Clinton that every teacher is free to develop his or her own curriculum — and prefers it that way. Although the Ontario Depart- ment of Education came under criticism by the committee because of its lack of direction in some courses of study for some grades, it was evident from the presentation made by the Huron teachers that most modern educators enjoyed the freedom they enjoyed within the broad guidelines set down by the department. Ralph Smith, Principal of Robertson Memorial School in Goderich, compared the detailed courses of study of former years to the very loosely structured guidelines provided by the department of education these days. He noted his belief that more definite courses are valuable especially in the kin- dergarten to grade 6 area, because it is important that certain skills be taught to all children. Herb Murphy, science department head at Goderich DCI, spoke of the need to co- ordinate the courses taught in the intermediate grades -- seven, eight, nine and ten — so that the transition from elementary school to secondary school can be as smooth as possible, causing the least amount of upset to the fewest number of students. It was pointed out that each department in the secondary school must function as a curriculum committee. Departments at the present time do develop courses and work on curriculum, but more local work Ask improvement of beef transportation Resolutions were passed at the Annual Meeting of the Ontario Beef Improvement Association to improve transportation facilities for cattle coming to Ontario from the West; to ask the Ontario Government for financial help with expanding and establishing cow-calf operations in Ontario; to form a communications com- mittee; to educate and police the use of drugs. The resolutions on tran- sportation give OBIA Directors authority to: - 1. Press for in- creased feed and water limits during the final destination period and elimination of some stopovers such as White River; 2. Ask for a change in the Criminal Code to allow a 42 hour period rather than a 36 hour period between feeding so that the final destination can be reached earlier by eliminating some hold- overs; 3. Seek better freight rates and conditions; 4. Hire practical cattlemen as inspectors to watch over feeding, watering and health of cattle at feeding yards. A vote of 70 to 36 carried a motion to urge the Ontario government to institute a program of subsidization for the cow-calf operator by providing guaranteed credit at prime in- terest rates with 20 percent of the loan being made forgiveable after seven years. The purpose of the com- munications committee is to help solve a communication problem. Delegates at the meeting felt a better system of reaching grass roots feelings on contentious issues must be sought by this committee in co-operation with the Directors. The recommendation to police drugs came from a motion that expressed concern over the future use of drugs in agriculture. 1969 SPITFIRE III, yellow with black top, Michelin tires, radio. 9111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111(11111111111111U11111111111111111116111111111=1101111111611111111111L4 Steer This Way GIFTS FROM THE EAST are shown by Mrs. Gordon who wears a beautiful blue kimona, and by four-year old Raymond who holds a Japanese doll.
