Students in next year's secondary
school enrolment, the Middlesex
County Board of Education has
approved plans to hire seventeen
more teachers — one for every
17.9 students.
The staff increase was ap-
proved at this week's regular
board meeting when total
enrolment in the County's five
secondary schools was prediOed
to rise to 4,242 in the 1972-73
school year.
The board also approved in
principle an experimental course
in Year 2 French at Medway High
School. The course will be an
extension of an earlier ex-
perimental program that started
with grade 7 pupils at Centennial
elementary school in 1969.
Plan program
for small farms
Agriculture Minister H.A.
(Bud ) Olson has announced that
the federal government is
prepared to proceed to im-
plement a Small Farms
Development Program on a
national basis,
The national program will
include a farm listing service, a
land transfer program,
assistance to farmers who choose
to leave agriculture and special
credit facilities to promote the
development of profitable family
farms,
"We were hopeful that the
provinces would see fit to join us
in a federal-provincial program,
but agreement has not been
possible to attain despite a year
of negotiations and meetings,"
Mr. Olson said.
"We have offered to meet with
the provinces on an individual
basis to negotiate im-
plementation of expanded
programs which will take into
account the concerns of each
province," Mr. Olson said.

County okays
travel boost
Although Clerk-treasurer for
the County of Huron, John Berry,
could not say exactly what it
would mean in total dollars,
members of council voted
themselves an increase in
mileage from 10 cents to 12 cents
per mile effective March 1.
The executive committee
chaired by McKillop Reeve Allan
Campbell, said that the raise
would put county councillors in
line with all other county per-
sonnel as far as mileage is
concerned.
It was Anson McKinley,
deputy-reeve of Stanley, who
wondered how much the increase
would cost the county taxpayers.
"How large an item is this?"
asked McKinley.
"There is no way to tell,"
answered Clerk Berry.
Derry Boyle, Reeve of Exeter,
was the first councillor to oppose
increase for mileage.
"We hassle over the services to
our people but there's no dif-
ficulty approving something for
ourselves," observed Boyle. "We
just raised our annual stipend a
while ago. I see no reason to raise
the mileage rates."
Several councillors agreed with
Boyle but the vote carried easily
to approve the increase,
WHAT'S DOING?
