Finally the teenagers of Exeter are saying it to the older generation instead of to each other. What are they saying? They are saying "We are fed up! We want a place to go at nights?" That's right, The youth of Exeter want a "hang out." For years the teenagers just prowled the streets with nothing to door else Sat around at the pool hall or restaurants becoming "wall flowers." How does one go about getting a coffee shop in a small town of prejudiced people? Well, the only way you can de that is to show these people that the youth of Exeter or the youth in general are not as corrupt as they imagine them to be. Just because a boy has hair that hangs down past his shoulders and wears faded blue jeans and girls run around without bras and wear boys clothes doesn't make them hippies, By ROSS HUNTLEY In the past, there has been fierce competition for summer Ontario Development Corporation FOR SALE BY TENDER ' Sealed tenders will be received until 12:00 o'clock noon, local time on Friday, March 10,1972, for the purchase and removal of Buildings No. 7, 8, 9 and 10 (former barracks of approx. 21,000 sq. ft. :each) at Huron Industrial Park. Further information may be obtained by ,contacting Mr. P. D. Lavier, Maintenance Superintendent, Huron Industrial Park (228-6657). Any or all offers not necessarily acceptable. C. J. Malone, Manager Huron Industrial Park policy. Canning factories are a good example. They give the same wages everyone else does, but they only pay overtime after fifty-five hours instead of forty hours. Also, due to the crops, ripening at odd times, one may work one day until twelve and the next day not at all, There is also the possibility of getting laid off in the middle of the season, which nobody likes. The general policy of the factories concern money more than people. Thirdly, one should try to work well at a job because it insures a position for next year and perhaps even a job after school. Good luck and happy hunting. lobs and this year there will be no exception. There are also a lot of people that are able to work for the first time at jobs that require social insurance and 'like last year many will get underpaid and hard jobs, My first advice is to look for jobs early and try to make- the greatest number of applications possible. One friend of mine was offered five summer jobs just because he sent applications to every place he could think of getting a job at, Secondly, don't just look at the wages per hour or the rumors of what someone else has made instead, look at the employment RACEWAY CYCLE & SPORTS RR 8 PARKHILL PHONE 294.6702 Located at Corbett on Highway 81 Five Miles North of Parkhill • Motorcycles • Snowmobiles Polaris — Kawasaki — Norton — Make Bultaca NOW OPEN DAILY 9 A.M. - 9 P.M. SAT. UNTIL Er P.M. Today there is no ete.h thing as a true hippie. They died out around Q8-69. Now what we have today is "Long Hairs" (like General Custer-- he was a lens hair, folks — not a hippie). Today there is no such thing as fashion. Today people dress to express themselves; express the mood they're in. So next time you see a Long Hair strolling down the streets of Exeter you say to yourself. "Good grief look at (him or her) what's the world coming toll Yet I remember when I was a teenager, my parents said the same thing to me, Heavens some of the clothes I wore and good grief those dances used to drive mom and dad crazy, I suppose they are no worse than I was, there's just more of them this time around. Ha, Ha, Ha." The thing that really drives me crazy is the old "cop out" of the older generation every time the youth wants to start something "they just aren't responsible enough" yet the older generation never gives them a chance to prove that they are responsible enough, So the old cop out con- tinues escaping their parched cynical lips "They just aren't reponsible, I tell you they are responsible. They refuse to ac- cept responsibility." All I can say is "Baby, look at your generation — I mean really, really take a close look at the alcoholics who refuse respon-- sibility, and the people who are on welfare, divorce cases left and right. I say, "Judge yourselves before you attempt to judge other people — eh baby." Once again I'll say this to the older generation "Douse your silly and out motivated prejudices and for once let us prove that we are responsible enough. Is South Huron a school where all the students are just blind, obedient, spokes of the giant wheels called "education?" Is South Huron a school where the teachers' opinions' are shoved, kicked and jammed down the throats of an oppressed student body, and, do the teachers jump up and down and beat you over the head for questioning their opinions? Is it an institution where you march up and down the halls in single file doing the goose step to some off beat marching music while you proceed to the next class? Does Mr. Wooden stand out in the halls with a large "Billy Stick" to clobber some of us over the head for not marching to class in single file, and does Mr. Sanders stand behind him with a tear gas gun to break up any little gathering in the halls in case of riot? I could go on and on about what doesn't happen here. So here's what does happen here in South Huron. Just look around you someday after school or between lunch periods and even the time bet- ween class changes and you'll see 1, Students sitting in the halls. 2, Teachers standing around laughing in hysteria from a joke that was just told to them by a group of students. 3. You sure won't find anybody doing the goose step to the next class unless the person who is doing it is doing it to get some attention from the other students. 4, You sure won't find any uniforms. Instead you'll see every thing from blue jeans to hot pants, from mini skirts to maxi skirts and anywhere from hair dragging on the floor to crew cuts and brush cuts. 5. The class rooms are ,orderly but at times you may hear laughter echoing down the halls. 6. You do not have to stand when you answer a question or ask a question. In general, where else can you sit in the halls or on the steps and not get hassled for it? You can tell that the students (not all mind you, though) enjoy school. You can see it in their eyes or on their faces. Mr. Wooden and Mr. Sanders are doing a swell job of trying to make it a place to learn as well as a place where you can enjoy yourselves. If you don't believe this we suggest that you go to a London school or Mitchell or Clinton, Wingham and so on. Then see which one you prefer. Its South Huron District High School! An old saying — "School is what you make it!" How did you make it? Hinmrn- mm. or a speed freak or even something worse). On the other hand everything the bible says could be true, after all it was only translated . . how many times? Yours sincerely an ATHEIST To our Christian Student: This might clear up a few of your mistakes in your letter a few weeks ago. To Rob Lee: I hope I have my facts straight and clear like you indicated in your last letter. Some people (namely our Christian Student) think that kids who take dope, have parents which aren't strict enough, This isn't so: Parents can also be too strict, causing kids to take dope at home to more or less bring the party or dance that they can't go to, to them. Most people that I know that take dope, have both straight f fiends,' and sPeed, or acid freaks for friends. Gaining friends, or doing it because their friends do it can't be the reason for turning to dope. Acting grown up can't be the reason either, because I don't think that very many grown ups take dope. "For Kicks" could be a reason though, but it could also answer the question why people drink, go to dances, or parties, or what ever else they do in their spare time. I sometimes wonder what getting out of reality really is. It could be going back into your childhood when you were brought up in an imaginary world. Is that really bad.? I don't really think that dope is very easy to get! It is also sup- posed to be very expensive, so who ever buys it must really need or want it. About the part; "there is nothing else to do:" How many times has the older generation praised the younger generation for doing something right? If the younger generation does the least little wrong though they sure give it to the younger generation, Everyone is supposed to be leading their own life, so how could someone be getting even with another person by destroying their own life? About "Jesus" there is no proof that he is the son of "God" or that there even is a "God". There is also no proof that he isn't some sort of mushroom freak (which could be similar to an acid freak TA Copy Cats! That's us. Our photocopier can reproduce your documents and book pages.
