Dear Editor,
I have just received a letter of
protest from a group of local
individuals and have been asked
to forward it to you. It is as
follows:
It has come to our attention
that certain allegations have
been made in your newspaper as
to the nature of our arrival in
your community,
First of all, let me state that we
relocated in Exeter through the
donations of a few sportsmen,
hunters, and conservationists in
your area, and not, as has been
stated in the letters by Miss Kirk
and Miss Edwards, by any
monies unjustly taken from the
teenagers of the town. This was
non-public money used solely for a
public purpose.
Secondly, to he called
"needless," to say that we are
"non-profit," and to say that we
were brought here "simply
24 Tenders Wanted
because they look nice" is a
severe blow to one's ego, I assure
you!
In the good weather we stay at
your local resorts known as
Morrison Dam and Riverview
Park. We are fed there, at no cost
to the public, by Al-Vin. He comes
very early in the morning and
also late at night to see that we
are cared for and protected.
Not to be forgotten are the
students at your S.H.D.H.S. who
built nesting boxes for our
cousins, the wood duCks. A
belated thank you to them,
It has been suggested that our
presence at these places might
attract some of our brethren to
relocate here and stay. That
would please us greatly.
However, if we continue to be
harangued,mightthe.yget the idea
that Exeter is a great place to
visit but a poor place to live, to
coin as phrase.
9tfnc
We are boarded for the winter,
at considerable expense and
bother we are sure, by two local
families, one from Centralia and
the other from Grand Bend. This
is, we know, a burden to them,
but they seem to enjoy having us
around and we certainly thank
them, for their hospitality. This
again does not cost the taxpayer
anything. It does get cold in this
area in the winter and we all
must have some place to stay,
ladies,
In conclusion, I must say that
on the whole we enjoy being a
part of your community and we
particularly like to meet the
school children when they visit
with us. Come and see us in the
spring.
Yours always,
A. Mallard Duck
P.S. Our brethren, the royal and
regal Canada Geese, are
disgruntled at not having been
mentioned at all. They have
called a meeting (known to the
trade as a gaggle) to strike for
equal recognition.
Their demands are few. Just
three. Clean air, clean water, and
a place on this planet.
Their threat is this. Just one.
No more to hear the call of the
Canada Goose, No more. Think
about it,
Submitted by our friend Dave
Dale.
Lest we forget . . .

Soon once again with joy, we
await the return of those sunlit
days of Spring
But also with a touch of sadness,
as to our memory ,
tragedies of war they bring
We can see the "Fields • of
Flanders" and the poppies,
that sad scarlet symbol of
sacrifice waving in the sun
Keeping their vigil over the
crosses, that mark the graves
of many a brave Canadian
soldier son
Col. John Macrae immortalized
forever, with his poignant
poem, "In Flanders Fields."

With its message from the
departed heroes, placing into
our hands the "Torch of
Freedom," then into our heart
this steals
They ask that we keep faith with
them, who gave their lives,
that we be made no foreigners
slave"
Hearken well as they send their
message of trust to us, from
their,. never to be forgotten
grave
Into the pages of Canadian
history, with their life's blood,
they wrote the story of their
love for their native land
We must never forget that we
owe them a big debt of
gratitude, for the sacrifices of
that heroic band
To children yet unborn in the
years to come, will their
bravery and courage be in-
stilled into their childish
receptive minds
And when grown to maturity,
they will understand and feel
proud, that their fathers
fashioned the tie, that in unity
our Nation so solidly binds
We must to the mothers and those
orphans, now widowed and
fatherless our protection daily
give, should we fail we will
have cause to regret
At a time like this, Rudyard
Kiplings immortal
"Recessional" vividly comes
to mind, I can hear it yet
"Oh Lord God of Hosts be with us
still," with its warning coming
so clear. "Lest we Forget."
