FOR ALL, GOOD SPORTS
By Rosi Haugh
Playoff time
again
It doesn't seem like a year ago when hockey
playoffs first started but a full twelve months have
rolled. around and exciting playoff action is available on
many fronts.
Two Exeter clubs are still in the running for
provincial honors and many others are still competing
for honors on lower levels which are just as important to
the competitors.
The junior Hawks are starting their OHA group
finals with the Belmont Sunsets in an attempt to go as
far as they did last year in reaching the Ontario finals
against the Haliburton Huskies.
The Exeter Broncos, last year's division novice
champions are still in the running after having a close
call against Goderich in a first playoff round.
All Exeter clubs are still in the running for
championships in the Shamrock minor hockey league.
The newly formed South Huron hockey league is
nearing the final round. The Hensall Cascadians and
Huron Park are now battling for the right to meet the
Zurich Flyers for the championship.
-Exciting hockey action is assured from the two
area Rec hockey leagues. Playoffs are underway in the
Exeter and district Rec league and in the Ausable Valley
Rec loop.
The four Exeter Rec teams will be in action in
playoff competition for the next three Thursday nights
at least and the teams of the Ausable league see action
at the Exeter arena every Sunday night.
If the first two games of the Ausable semi-final
round are indications of what is to follow, plenty of
spirited action is assured.
Sunday night, Lieury and Brinsley knocked off
Shipka and Ailsa Craig in opening playoff action to
speed up the excitement. Both games went into
overtime before a winner was declared.
Numerous injuries
While all supporters of the Exeter Hawks are
looking for good performances in the playoffs now
underway, the team is seriously hampered by injuries.
Defenceman Shane McKinnon who suffered a
broken ankle several months ago is not expected back
for another two weeks or so.
Forward Peter Kleinstiver out with a broken jaw
since the third game of the semi-final series with Clinton
will not be back for another few games. The injury has
not been healing properly.
To add to the growing list of injuries is speedy
forward Brian Campbell. The Hensall area youngster was
injured at work last week and in an emergency
operation had his spleen removed. He will be lost for the
balance of the season.
With the enlarged sick list, several midgets will
probably see considerable action. Murray Parsons was in
the line-up in two of the Clinton games and certainly
didn't look out of place.
Best of luck, Hawks, as you move along the
playoff trail.
Tournament time
Many Exeter and district minor hockey teams will
be busy during the upcoming spring school break
participating in the numerous tournaments which are
available.
We received a schedule of the Young Canada pee
wee tourney at Goderich this week, listing the 84 games.
The big event opens on Friday night, March 17
and Huron Park will meet Seaforth in a "C" contest.
Saturday will be a busy day for area clubs. Grand
Bend meets Brussels at 8:10 a.m., Zurich faces Tiverton
at 9:20 and Lucan meets Wingham at 3:10 in the
afternoon.
The Exeter pee wees see their first action on
Tuesday March 21 at 8:10 a.m. with Hespeler providing
the opposition in the "B" division.
At 10:30 a.m., Friday March 24, Hensall swings
into action against a club from Six Nations.
Hockey for Bunny Bundle
Area hockey fans are reminded of the exhibition
hockey game scheduled for the Huron Park arena,
Monday night at 7:30.
All proceeds of the game go to the support of
Crippled Children through the Bunny Bundle fund at
CFPL radio in London.
Pitting their hockey skills against each other will
be the Centralia College Saints and the Exeter Rec
league all-stars. Four players from each of the four local
rec clubs will be seen in action.
Taking part from Newby Tire will be Jim Newby,
Craig Davidson, Mike Cushman and Bob McDonald
while Pete Lawson, Ron Cornish, Fred Wells and Scott
Burton will be representing the Bank Boys.
From the Juveniles will be John Bierling, Brian
Murray, Rick McDonald and Gary Parsons with Cliff
Corman, Jim O'Toole, Gary Balsdon and Pete McFalls
from the Vikings.
A real challenge
The way Frank Mahovlich sees it, it's the second
1,000 games of a player's career that really poses a
challenge.
So, the "Big M" playing in his 1,001 st regular
season game on January 27 met the challenge with a hat
trick against the Minnesota North Stars.
It marked the 13th time in his NHL career that
Mahovlich had registered a three goal game and the
second this year. He is now in his 15th season in the
NHL,
Mahovlich who was traded to the Canadiens in
early 1971 started the present campaign with a total of
. 421 career goals.
This ranks him fifth among the all-time goal
scorers in NHL history. Only Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull,
Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau are ahead of him.
Theo nly other active player now is Hull,
The "Big M" is still more than 50 goals away
from equalling the mark of Beliveau, to whom he is the
closest in goals scored,
BeliVeau retired at the end of last season with 507
goals in 18 NHL seasons, Mahovlich with his 32nd goal
of the year Stinday has reached the 453 career mark.
The Exeter Hawks took the
important first game in the
best-of-seven series for the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" western grouping
championship.
The Hawks spotted the
Belmont Sunsets a goal in the
first few seconds of the game at
the Exeter arena Tuesday night
and roared back to chalk up a 6 - 3
victory.
The second game will be played
in Belmont Friday night at 8:30
p.m. with the third slated for the
Exeter arena Sunday afternoon
at two o'clock.
The scene switches back to the
Belmont arena for the fourth
contest, Tuesday night at 8.30. If
further games are necessary
they will be in Exeter, Friday
March 10, Belmont, Sunday
March 12 and Exeter March 14.
The Sunsets who finished a
close second to the league win-
ning Hawks ousted the Mitchell
Hawks three games to one in a
semi-final series. The score of the
final game was 5 - 0 for Belmont.
Rec playoffs
start this week
The regular schedule in the
Exeter and district Rec hockey
league was completed Thursday
night and Newby Tire finished in
first place.
In Thursday's final league
action, Newby Tire downed the
Juveniles 6 - 4 while the second
place Bank Boys were edged 4 - 3
by the Vikings. ,
The first games in set/II-final
playoff action goes tonight,
Thursday at eight o'clock with
Newby Tire taking on the
Juveniles while the Bank Boys
and Vikings meet in the second
contest at 9.30.
-Ron Broderick and Mike Cush-
man each scored two goals to
pace the Newby attack in the win
over the Juveniles. Adding single
scores were Steve Caspec and
Ron Johnson.
Jim McDonald with two goals
was the top scorer for the
Juveniles. Single goals were
scored by Jim Pfaff and Dale
Skinner.
Dennis Passmore with two
goals was best for the Vikings in
their win over the Bank Boys. Bill
Van Bergen and Alex
Leatherland with one goal a piece
completed the scoring for the
winners.
Two goals from the stick of
George Bruneau paced the Bank
Boys attack with the odd counter
being notched by Fred Wells.

the Clinton Mustangs in five
games in a best-of-seven series.
Score shorthanded
Playing short handed or having
a man advantage didn't seem to
make much difference to the
Hawks Tuesday night as they
scored goals under both cir-
cumstances.
Doug Hepburn was quick to put
Belmont on the scoreboard with a
goal only 34 seconds after the
game started.
At 5.25 John Willsey of the
Sunsets was sent off for tripping
and it took the Hawks only three
seconds to even the score.
Captain Larry Haugh got the
draw in the Belmont end zone and
flipped the puck back to winger
Steve Murley who fired a quick
shot past Jim Weaver in the
Belmont net.
Near the halfway mark of the
first period, the Hawks ran into
penalty trouble and Jim Guen-
ther and Ron Janke were waved
off in short order.
The two man shortage didn't
seem to bother the Hawks any as
Murley was able to find the
scoring range for the second
time. This time defenceman Rob
Lindenfield provided the passing
help. Only seconds earlier
Murley had been thwarted by
Weaver with a good stop.
With less than two minutes left
in the opening session, Paul
Vanderspank tallied for the
Sunsets to even the count at 2- 2
with both teams at full strength.
Early in the second frame,
John Logan of Belmont was sent
off for tripping and it took the
Exeter club only 35 seconds to
take advantage of the situation.
Bob Rowe was alert to pick up a
loose puck. in the corner back of
the Belmont net. Unable to find a
team-mate to pass to he moved
toward the net from the side and
fired a shot that deflected off a
Belmont defender and into the
net.
The Hawks moved ahead with
the teams playing five aside.
Janke's goal turned out to be the
eventual winner.
The Sunsets were able to cut
the Exeter lead to a single goal in
the early minutes of the third
period on a goal from the stick of
Bob Summers.
Only 13 seconds later the
Hawks were able to regain their
two goal margin. This time it was
Pete Gill firing the successful
shot with passing help from Bob
Rowe.
The final score of the game
came with less than two minutes
remaining and assured the
Exeter victory. Ron Lindenfield
was on the firing end of the shot
on an unassisted effort.
The Sunsets picked up 15 of the
27 penalties assessed by referees
Jim Shurrie and Jim Byatt. The
only major penalties went to
Brian Bestard of the Hawks and
Sunset Bob Summers for fighting
in the second period.
The attendance was 656.
Upsets hit
Ausable loop

contest while Brinsleydowned the

Bulldogs 5-3, also in overtime.
Louis Slater's fourth goal of the
night at 2.04 of the overtime
period gave Lieury the upset win.

scoring performance, John
Bridgette fired two successful
shots for Lieury while Paul
Glavin, Stan Harwood and Bob
Robinson notched singles.

effort was best for Ailsa Craig.

Griffiths, Charles Eedy, Paul
Rollings and Larry Dobbinson.
