Hawks get game lead over Clinton,
thanks to four goal performances
with Larry Haugh assisting on
both.
Early in the third period,
Murley finished off his produc-
tive night as he scored from in
'close. Haugh and Lindenfield
again assisted.
At 8.16 of the third, Larry
Haugh scored on a three-way
effort with Ron Lindenfield and
Perry Stover for his fifth point of
the night.
Late in the game, Stover made
the final period got underway.
Ron Lindenfield notched the
first Hawk counter on a three-
way passing play with Larry
Haugh and Pete Glover. The
' second was shot by Steve Murley
with Haugh again assisting.
The final goal of the game
came near the halfway mark of
the third period with Paul
Johnston scoring for the
Mustangs.
The Hawks had a wide edge in
Four goal performances from a
couple of players have put the
Exeter Hawks into the lead in
their best-of-seven Ontario
Hockey Association Junior "D"
semi-final series with the Clinton
Mustangs.
In the opening game of the
series Friday night on Exeter ice,
Brian Bestard fired four suc-
cessful shots to lead the Hawks to
a 9-6 win.
After dropping a 4-2 decision in
Clinton, Sunday, the Exeter club
bounced back Tuesday, winning
6-1 on the strength of Steve
Murley's four goal effort.
The two teams meet in Clinton
Friday in the fourth game and
will be back in Exeter Sunday
afternoon for the fifth contest. If
a sixth game is necessary it goes
in Clinton, Tuesday night.
In other league playoff action,
the Belmont Sunsets disposed of
the Lambeth Flyers in three
straight games and are waiting
for the winner of the Mitchell-
Lucan series.
Mitchell had eliminated Lucan
in three games, but a successful
protest by the Irish wiped the
series out.
The two clubs met in Lucan last
night, Wednesday and will be
back in Mitchell, Friday for the
second game in a total goals
series.
Murley leads
Steve Murley's four goal
performance was more than
enough as the Hawks downed the
Mustangs 6-1 Tuesday.
The speedy left winger opened
the game scoring at 9.40 of the
opening period as he converted
passes from Larry Haugh and
Ron Lindenfield.
John McKinley counted the
lone Clinton goal of the night late
in the first session to create a tie
at the end of the opening twenty
minutes.
The only scoring of the second
period was taken care of by Steve
Murley as he registered two goals
bunches, getting the first two in
the opening period and the next
pair in quick order late in the
third period.
Perry Stover assisted on both
goals fired by Brian Bestard in
the first period, Bill Stirling was
the lone marksman for the
Mustangs in the first period as
the Hawks took a 2-1 lead.
The biggest Hawk margin,
until late in the game came in the
second period when they were
able to go ahead by a 5-2 score,
Steve Murley took a pass from
Larry Haugh to notch the third
Hawk score of the night at 1,57 of
the middle frame, Pete Glover
was on the scoreboard less than
two minutes later on a play
started by Ron Lindenfield and
Lindenfield tallied from -Murley
and Haugh. The second period
Clinton goals were registered by
Stu Mustard and Ron Graham.
The Mustangs rallied in the
early minutes of the third period
and scored two quick goals to tie
the score temporarily. Stu
Mustard scored both goals, the
second at 4.27.
The Hawks bounced back
quickly with Larry Haugh
scoring from Ron Lindenfield 50
seconds later and Brian Bestard
picking up his hat trick with help
coming from Perry Stover and
Rob Lindenfield near the halfway
mark.
The last Mustang marker was
chalked up by Stu Mustard at
10.57 as he completed a four goal
effort.
Brian Bestard was back at
16.33 to equal Mustard's per-
formance and Steve Murley
completed the game scoring less
than a minute later.
Assists on the final two Exeter
goals were picked up by Peter
Kleinstiver and Larry Haugh.
The penalty parade was fairly
light with the Hawks getting
tagged 10 of the 16' called by
referees Mel Huctwith and Bill,
Shaddick.
The halls of South Huron District High School
usually quiet on a Saturday will come to life this
Saturday when an invasion of all sizes of athletes will
take place,
The two gyms at South Huron will be the scene
of the annual Western Ontario Secondary Schools.
Association wrestling tournament.
More than 250 boys from some 50 schools in five
district conferences will be competing for WOSSA
championships.
When we say all sizes will be competing, that's
exactly what we mean. There will be a total of 14
weight divisions ranging from the lightest at 90 pounds
up to the 194 pound class and the unlimited division for
extremely big boys. •
The highlight of the tournament besides the fact
it is being held in Exeter for the first time is the
inclusion of the entire South Huron wrestling team.
Goderich, Friday, the local wrestlers under the
guidance of coach Doug Ellison won the Huron-Perth
championship for the third consecutive time.
Probably more exciting than the team champion-
ship was the nine individual titles won by the South
Huron youngsters. This is an all-time high for the local
school.
In 1970, five wrestlers from SHDHS won Huron-
Perth crowns while last year only two were successful.
With the competitions taking place within the
friendly confines of their own school and plenty of
vocal support to assist, we would hope for some WOSSA
champions from South Huron.
If dedication to their sport and the job at hand is
any indication of their success on Saturday, our local
school wrestlers should be right in the thick of things,
The boys on the team have been practicing every
night of the school week and participating in numerous
meets on the weekends for the last couple of months.
When school classes were cancelled on Friday,
February 4 for most SH students because of the
weather, the wrestlers were in to practice Sunday
afternoon to make up for lost time.
Saturday will be a good opportunity for local
residents whether wrestling fans or not to get a good
look at this exciting sport.
The amateur type of wrestling that goes on in
high schools is a far cry from the version seen on
television. We have talked to a few people that said, "we
would like to watch the meet but we don't know
any thing about wrestling."
Knowledge is not necessary to enjoy this sport.
It's simply a case of two well conditioned athletes trying
to pin each other to the floor in the shortest amount of
time with not only strength but a variety of holds, very
few of which are ever seen on television.
Aetion in the WOSSA meet will be continuous in
both gyms from about 10:30 a.m. to well into the
evening when the finals will be staged.
While the chief meet officials will be stationed in
the new gym at the east end of the school, a closed
circuit television camera will be used to send all action
from the old gym back to the main action centre. -
While South Huron represents the Huron-Perth
Conference, the Beck Spartans will be here from
London, Regina Mundi from the Middlesex conference,
Sarnia Central from Lambton and Huron Park of
Woodstock from Oxford-Elgin.
In addition to the five championship schools,
wrestlers from other schools in the five conferences that
finished in the top three or four in each division will
also be competing.
Two of the larger conferences,/ London and
Oxford-Elgin with more schools in the fold are allowed
the first four in each class while the other three may
send the first three in addition to the championship
team.
Best of luck to the South Huron boys as they try
to bring more laurels to the local school.
Will it materialize'
The newest professional hockey league hopes to
be in action about a year from the time first announce-
ments were made of its establishment.
A hockey game in Miami, Florida on October 12
sounds like a strange happening, but that's when the
first game in the new World Hockey Association has
been scheduled.
If the new league becomes a reality and the
founders say it definitely will, big league hockey will no
longer be isolated and identified solely with specific
areas but bring the four corners of North America
together.
Three of the men behind the new league are
quite experienced in getting a new league going against
established loops. Gary Davidson, Michael O'Hara and
Dennis Murphy were instrumental in getting the Ameri-
can Basketball Association on its feet.
The new twelve team league is expected to have
at least five teams in Canada which is a better
percentage than the National Hockey League can boast,
Most people are concerned about where all the
necessary players will come from, but the big problem
we envision would be suitable arenas.
Winnipeg is the only Canadian city with an arena
that comes close to seating enough people to support a
top professional club. New arenas are apparently in the
offing in Edmonton and Hamilton while Calgary and
Quebec City plan on enlarging their seating capacities.
Each of the new clubs is going to attempt to
come up with seven present NHL players to provide the
nucleus of their rosters for the 19/1-72 season.
The only players presently performing in the
NHL that could legally play for the new clubs would be
those on the last year of their contracts.
The new teams appear to have lots of capita]
available to entice top stars away from their present
employers.
If any of the new proposed teams had joined the
NHL as expansion teams the franchise Cost would be six
million dollars.
Even with inflated salaries we imagine they could
take care of a couple of years with the money that
would have gone for franchises in, Clarence Campbell's
loop.
If the new league comes up with a reasonable
brand of hockey getting fan support shouldn't pose any
great problems. Fans in the prairie provinces will then
have access to three big league arenas.

Brian Bestard and Ron Janke.
Sink early
In Clinton Sunday night, the
Hawks fell behind in the early
minutes of the game and were
never able to catch up.
The game was only a minute
old when Stu Mustard blinked the
red light for the Mustangs.
In the balance of the first
session, Ron Graham scored
twice to give Clinton a 3-0 lead as
the team headed for the first rest.
The only Exeter scoring came
in the second period and the
Clinton lead was pared to 3-2 as
BRIAN BESTARD STEVE MURLEY
each score four goals in one game'
the-shat-on-goal department but
Fred German in the Clinton nets
came up with many sensational
stops.
The Mustangs also were ahead
in the penalty parade taking 1:4 of
the 26 infractions called.
Go ahead gradually
The' Exeter Hawks scored one
more goal than the Clinton
Mustangs in each period Friday
night as they won the first game
of the best-of-seven league semi-
final by a 9-6 score.
Brian Bestard was far and
away the top Hawk goal producer
with a four goal performance.
