and society has done this to itself.
"A great number of women opt
for secretarial work, Some of the
best minds in this country may be

Mrs. Eleanor Scott, principal of
Huron Hope School for retarded
children was guest speaker at the
South Huron Hospital Auxiliary
meeting Tuesday afternoon.
She stressed that the children
at Huron Hope are people with
individual characteristics who
should not be set apart from
others in the community. Most of
them have some kind of physical
problem, such as, poor eyesight,
poor hearts and poor co-
ordination, etc. She pointed out
life is difficult for them.
Mrs. Scott said that at the
school the teachers try to get the
potential from each child. They
are taught by constant repetition
and with a great deal of love and
patience. Being able to look after
themselves and some of the
social skills was what the
children mainly learn at the
school.
"It is wrong to try to teach
more to the child than he is
of doctors are women.
Mr. Nixon concluded by saying,
"Goirdriiment should not
legislate quotas for employment
of women and it cannot legislate
social attitudes."
"Society must change its own
rules and the impetus must come
from both men and women."
capable of learning," said the
principal. "This leads to
frustration." Mrs. Scott showed
slides and played tape recordings
to show the auxiliary some of the
activities at the school.
She was introduced by Mrs.
Walter Davis and thanked by
Mrs. Thomas MacMillan.
Mrs. Melvin Gaiser, president,
was in charge of the business part

were made for the Spring rum-
mage sale in April.
Mrs. Larry Taylor, who makes
stuffed animal toys for the
hospital cart, asked for donations
of washable material which could
be delivered to her home on

The Social Services Co-
ordinating Committee for Huron
County has been granted funds
for salaries and overhead ex-
penses through the Local
Initiative Program, Dept. of
Manpower and Immigration.
Federal Government, to conduct
a survey throughout the county.
The project began January 31
and will be completed by the end
of May.
The Social Services Co-
ordinating Committee has been
in existence since 1968. It is made
up of Representatives from social
agencies such as Childrens Aid
Society, churches, the Board of
Education, Dept, of Health,
Goderich Psychiatric Hospital,
Probation, Canada Manpower,
The Medical Association and the
Dept, of Social and Family
Services.
The committee formed in the
hopes of improving 6o-ordination
and communication between the
members and the services they
represent. Also, they hope toplan
for future development of new
services to meet unfilled needs in
the county as a community.
The purpose of the survey are
twofold. First to assess the
overall health and social services
already in the county. Second, to
determine whether additional
services, such as family coun-
selling and recreation are
needed,
An extensive questionnaire has
been developed which will be

Robert F. Nixon, leader of the
opposition and leader of the
Liberal partyin Ontario, said at a
Toronto luncheon last week that
despite the legislation brought to
prohibit discrimination in hiring
on the basis of sex, not much has
changed for the working woman
in the past ten years,
Mr. Nixon stated that the
percentage of women presently
in management jobs,
professional jobs, clerical jobs
and other . ob categories has not
changed significantly since 1961.
"At one time, women were
denied access to training in some
professions but this has largely
been overcome. A woman can
now gain the credentials for
almost any job, but society has
decreed that certain jobs are for
women and certain jobs are for
men,"
He said although women
represented 38 percent of the
labour force in Ontario, they hold
only 12 percent of
managerial positions, 75 percent
of elementary school teachers
are women but only 8 percent are
principals.
Only 3 percent of professional
engineers are women, 12 percent
of professors are women, 10
percent of physicians,7 percent of
dentists, 5 percent judges and
magistrates, 4 percent lawyers
and 5 percent of accountants.
On the other side of the coin, 82
percent of librarians are women,
97 percent of nurses, and 100
percent of dental hygienists.
Mr. Nixon said the roles are set
