FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Help the
kids V
The emphasis will be on helping crippled children
at the Pineridge Chalet, near Hensall this weekend.
Crippled children from all parts of Western
Ontario including London's Timmy John Fitzgerald will
be guests of the energetic folks at the Chalet.
Radio station personnel from London and.
Wingham will be participating in a challenge event,
Sunday. The nature of the sporting challenge is still a
mystery but knowing Bill Brady and his gang from
CFPL, it could be almost anything,
Sunday is the big day when the visiting children
will be given free snowmobile rides and the disc jockeys
will have their fun in the afternoon.
The highlight on the Sunday menu at the
Pineridge will be barbecued moose and venison along
with burgers made from the meat of the two types of
animals.
Pancakes will be on the menu for Sunday
morning with Brady, who is famous for his recipes of all
countries handling the griddle chores with regulars Bob
Baker and Russ Tiernan.
Sandy Munn and Lloyd Mousseau will be in
charge of batter mixing with Gloria Mousseau looking
after the sausages. Also helping along with many other
area snowmobiling enthusiasts will be Don and Shirley
Mousseau and George .and Lucille Beer.
Let's hope for a boost from the weatherman as
the Pineridge and all their colleagues do their bit for
crippled kids.
Howe on TV
Sunday afternoon's public affairs program on
Channel 10 London will feature former Detroit Red
Wing star Gordie Howe.
The recently retired Howe will appear with
moderator Jack Burghart on "3 p.m. Inquiry". The.
show is being taped this morning at 11 o'clock in the
CFPL-TV studios.
Also appearing on the show will be OHA
president Tubby Schmalz, Greater London Minor
Hockey president Bob Crampton, Guy Emmerson of
Goderich past chairman of the Goderich Lions pee wee
tournament, Ernie Miller of the London Free Press and
Pete James of CFPL.
A studio audience of interested hockey parents
will be given an opportunity to question the guests.
Jack Burghart said, "We intend to examine some
of minor hockey's problems including its increased
professionalism. What happens once a boy or his parents
agree to play for a team in a certain league? Does he
become a pawn in the middle of an adult power
struggle? What hold does the Ontario Hockey
Association have over him?
A real invasion
Saturday, February 19 will be a busy day at
South Huron District High School when close to 300
athletes come to town.
It's the occasion of the Western Ontario
Secondary Schools Association wrestling tournament.
About 50 schools from all parts of Western
Ontario will be represented including those participating
in the Huron-Perth Conference.
It is hoped South Huron will have a full 14-man
squad entered in the tournament. As defending
Huron-Perth Conference champs, the local grapplers are
expected to bring back the same honors from the H-P
meet in Goderich, Friday of this week.
Under the direction of coach Doug Ellison the
local wrestlers are unbeaten in Huron-Perth and
exhibition play against some top schools in the
province.
The top three wrestlers in each weight category in
the H-P championships this week will compete in the
WOSSA trials along with all members of the winning
team.
For example, if one member of the championship
team places fourth, he will still qualify for WOSSA on
the strength of his team's overall showing along with the
top three contestants.
The London area Conference with 15 schools will
be allowed to send the first four in each division to
compete here.
The WOSSA meet on the 19th of February gets
underway at 10:30 in the morning with the finals slated
for 6:30 in the evening. Spectators are welcome at the
day-long event with a nominal admission fee being
charged.
South Huron coach Doug Ellison is convener of
the WOSSA championships.
Best of luck to the South Huron wrestlers in the
Huron-Perth and WOSSA competitions.
Separate school leagues
Under the direction of physical education
consultant John McCarron, teams from all schools in the
Huron-Perth separate school board jurisdiction will be
competing in junior and senior hockey leagues.
In preliminary junior division, Mount Carmel will
be meeting Goderich. In senior play, Mount Carmel
meets Ecole St. Marie and Exeter Precious Blood while
the other game for the Exeter separate school has
opposition from Zurich.
Bill Regier and Sandy McQuillan are the coaches
at Mount Carmel while Mike Morrison handles the
Precious Blood team.
Pacing the Rangers
Most people probably have never heard of Frank
Paice, but he has been in the National Hockey League
for more than 26 years.
Paice is the trainer of the New York Rangers and
is in his 27th year of sharpening skates, packing
equipment and the various important jobs looked after
by a trainer,
It took them all season
but the Exeter Hawks completed
the upward climb by winning the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" Western group
championship on home ice,
Tuesday night.
The battle for first place went
right down to the wire and the
Hawks were forced to down the
Clinton Mustangs 6 - 2 Tuesday
night to take the league title for
the second straight time.
The game was rescheduled
after being postponed Friday
because of stormy weather.
The Hawks finished up with a
41 point total, only one more than
the second place Belmont Sunsets
who had held top spot most of the
season, The Exeter club lost a
good opportunity to wrap up the
title Sunday night when they lost
in Belmont 5 - 3,

a best-of-seven affair, the Hawks
and Mustangs go right back at it
with the first game at the Exeter
arena, Friday night at 8,30.
The second game goes in
Clinton Sunday night at eight
with the third contest back in
Exeter Tuesday night at 8.30.

set has the Belmont Sunsets
taking on the Lambeth Flyers.
After Tuesday's win over
Clinton, Hawk captain Larry
Haugh and assistant captains
Pete Glover and Bob Rowe
received the league trophy,
donated by Gord Kirk of Exeter.
Brian Bestard was the top
Exeter scorer in the final league
game. With the Hawks leading 2 -
1 after the first period of play,
Bestard scored the only two goals
of the second session to put his
club well out in front.
The Hawks wasted little time
getting on the score 'sheet and on
the way to victory in the first

from Larry Haugh at the 3.08
A five point performance
Friday night enabled the BJ's to
move into first place in the
Exeter Legion mixed dart
league.
The BJ's now have a season
point total of 66, two more then
the runner-up Sharpshooters who
had been leading the league for
some time.
In third place are three teams,
the Doublers, Late Niters and
Dark Angels with identical point

mark to put the Exeter club
ahead and only two minutes later
Bob Rowe completed a successful
three-way ping play with
Brian Campbell and Pete Glover.
The only goal of the opening
session for Clinton came with less
than two minutes to go from the
stick of Ron Graham.
Perry Stover assisted on both,
of Brian Bestard's scores in the
second period while Keven
Bestard and Bob Parsons picked
up single assists.
Two quick goals in less than a
minute early in the third period
salted away the Hawks victory.
Pete Glover combined with
Brian Campbell and Bob Rowe
to notch the first at 6.28 and 58
seconds later it was Brian
Bestard on a solo effort com-
pleting his hat trick performance
for the night.
The penalty parade was fairly
even with the Mustangs taking 14
of the 27 assessed by referees
John Slota and Fred Kelso of St
Thomas.
Force fina I Game.
The Hawks came up with a,
lacklustre performance as they
lost 5-3 to the Sunsets in Belmont
Sunday night, forcing
rescheduling of Friday's post-
poned game with Clinton.
Each team scored two goals in
the first period, Belmont out-
scored the Hawks 2-1 in the
middle frame and added an in-
surance counter late in the third
period.
Defenceman Rob Lindenfield
opened the game scoring for the
Hawks at 4.57 as he converted a
pass from Brian Bestard,
Less than four minutes later
the game was all tied up with
Paul Vanderspank blinking the
light for Belmont.
At 10.05, Perry Stover on an
unassisted effort put the Hawks
in front for the last time.
With time running out in the
first period, Vanderspank not-
ched his second goal of the game
to again square the score.
