The day started with regular house league hockey action in the morning for three hours, went to an all-star game at noon, back to two house league games in the afternoon and concluded with seven more all-star contests to round out a full 13-hour program, Results of the house league games will be found in Alvin Willert's Rec News column elsewhere on these pages. Three stars for each of the all- star games were selected by a panel of judges and the top player on each team received a poster of NHL player cards. The first game of the afternoon found the St. Marys mites edging the Exeter Waxers 3 - 2 on a late third period goal by Mike Near. The other St. Marys goal getters were Kevin Mitchell and John Heard. The three stars were Bill Van Bergen and Wayne Regier of the winners and Dwight Jennison of Grand Bend, The battle for first place in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" Western grouping will probably go right down to the wire, which could be Sunday night and the last game of the schedule. As this is being written the Exeter Hawks are in second place, only one point behind the league leading Belmont Sunsets and have one game in hand. The Sunsets were in Exeter Tuesday night and a win for the Hawks would put them one point ahead. If this happens, the Hawks need only one win, either against the Clinton Mustangs in Exeter Friday night or in their last game when they travel to Belmont, Sunday night. The league playoffs with six teams in the running should provide a lot of exciting hockey action. All six clubs have shown the ability throughout the year to knock each other off at any given time, If the Hawks finish in first place, they will likely meet the Clinton Mustangs in the first round. This should make for a good series with very little travel involved for spectators of both teams. Let's get behind the Hawks as they head into the playoffs and aim for another crack at the provincial championship that eluded them so narrowly last year. A real success Saturday's Minor Hockey Day at the Exeter arena has to be deemed a huge success. While the attendance was probably not as high as some of the executive would have liked, other features of the program should be taken into consideration. The enthusiasm shown by the youngsters participating in the full day program was at a high pitch and a large number of parents and relatives were on hand to watch their favorites in action. Probably most important to the boys involved was the fact they were well fed after each game with mothers of the Exeter players helping with sandwich making for both teams. We talked to parents of some of the visiting teams from St. Marys and London and they were well pleased with the reception their boys received here. The usual custom of selecting three stars in each of the all-star games was continued but something new was added. • The top player on each team received a poster of National hockey league player picture cards. The boys were very enthused with their prizes. A lot of people deserve a lot of credit for the success of Saturday's Minor Hockey Day. We won't try to name any people in particular because we would be sure to miss somebody. The list would start with the arena staff, go through the Minor Hockey executive, all coaches, managers and many parents that were involved. Competent referees were on hand for aThgames. In some cases it was managers and coaches of minor teams that doubled up to help with the officiating. Also quite a number of personnel are needed to operate the time clock, keep tab on penalties and the game score. We would like to congratulate everyone that had any part in Saturday's festivities. We're sure any hardships they may have suffered from the extreme cold at the arena would be offset by the enthusiasm shown by the youngsters. The same goes for the people behind Hensall's Minor Hockey Day, also held Saturday. We were able to break away from the local activities for a few minutes Saturday night to see what was going on in Hensall. The hockey beginners were on the ice in Hensall and a large crowd was on hand to see these youngsters in action. Some were trying their hand at hockey for one of the first times. What they lacked in ability, they sure made up with desire. It was a case of up and down throughout the game. Good show for charity Hockey fans in the area with a couple of hours spare time Sunday afternoon could do a lot worse than visit the Hensall arena. The Hensall Kinsmen club is sponsoring an exhibition hockey game between the Hensall all-stars and a team of former stars of St. Michael's College in Toronto. A number of the members of the Hensall junior championship club of a few years ago are expected to be in the Hensall line-up along with stars of the present and recent years. These should include Craig Chapman, Bill Chipchase, Bill Shaddick and Dennis Morrissey to name only a few. The Toronto club is composed of former St. Mike's players interested in communities and service clubs in their projects. The goal tender for the Toronto club will be Gerry Ahearne, formerly with the Leafs for a short time. Close — but not quite DAVE TOM BOGART HAYTER it 31 I
