Worthy Of My Friends
If I could have but just one plea,
I think that that one prayer would
be,
With all that such a prayer
portends- -
"Lord, make me worthy of my
friends.
Barleycorn boots
Shoe sizes were originally
based on barleycorns. In 1324,
King Edward II decreed that
three barleycorns from the
centre of the ear of corn equalled
one inch. It was found that 39 of
them equalled the longest normal
foot length, This is how size 13
shoes were born,

There is an uncle and a young
gaffer in our family who always
greet each other at family get-to-
gethers with a poke on the chest
saying, "you know, you can't
ehoose your relatives, but you
can 'always pick' your friends."
This bit of torn-foolery came
about as the result of a camping
trip they took some time ago. It
was then they discovered they
were more than uncle and
nephew , they were something
even more special, friends.
There's another saying, "God
makes brothers but man makes
friends". In family relationships
there are inequalities and dif-
ferences: a younger child is
spared, an older brother has
special privileges, a mother
overlooks faults, and a father
may pretend to lose a wrestling
match. But with friends, all is
fair and equal.
Friendship gives us a sense of
individuality , . . not as a
mother's son, not as a husband's
wife, not as the youngest or the
oldest sister, nor the tallest or
shortest brother . , . but as a
'chosen' companion, taken for
what we are, with all our
weaknesses and strengths.
In friendship we find the
jubilance of having someone who
shares our special capacities and
interest, be it digging side by side
in the sandbox, hiking through
the woods, sharing the same
hobby or playing a game of
checkers.
in each of es is born the need
for someone to meet and accept
us on equal terms. Someone with
whom there are no barriers
wha is not shocked by our
down-fallings, who truly sustains
us through our trials, whose
laughter breaks out joyously at
our glad times and
achievements. Someone who can
share our most craven fears and
our wildest hopes „ . and yes,
even our blazing fury and in-
dignation.
A wonderful thing about
friendship is that we can continue
to make friends all our lives, I
remember one lady, well over 80,
who went to live in a home for the
aged and who met another
woman there of 90 years. In the
span of life that was left to them
they built a friendship that was
beautiful to see,
Of course, with friendship there
comes, as someone has said, "an
awful responsibility". For, to our
friends we owe a mighty
allegiance, Since they are among
our choicest possessions we must
use the greatest possible care in
preserving them.
The man or woman who has no
friends has made a terrible
mistake somewhere along life's
road.
Give me the courage under stress
That they expect me to possess;
And when they smile and look at
me,
Oh, let me be, Lord, what they
see!
Help me to be the kind of man
That loyal friends believe I am.
Help me to be true and fine
As they believe- -these friends of
mine,
This week we're featuring
favorite recipe of Howie Wright
who heads up the Art department
at the Times-Advocate.
Before he was married Howie
says he had to learn to cook or
starve; he chose the former.
"I made Beef Stew Bour-
bonnais on Sunday, when I had
the time, and ate it the rest of
the week, What wine I had left
'over I drank with the stew . . , a
good way to turn ordinary,
bachelor fare into a banquet."

MINCED HAM
Monday night, the Marching
Mothers of Exeter will again blitz
the town for the Ability Fund,
The Ability Fund, or the March
or Dimes as it used to be called,
was founded in Ontario in 1951 to
fight polio. With the discovery of
the Salk vaccine the organization
has since devoted itself to
assisting physically handicapped
adults. It does this by assessing
the handicapped person's
capabilites, by providing therapy
and medical attention, and by
purchasing wheelchairs, braces,
crutches, etc,
The Fund has given a "second
start" to thousands of persons,
among them is Dorothy Clark, a
native of this area, now living in
Stratford.
Miss Clark, who was left
almost totally paralyzed for 28

years after a severe bout of polio
at the age of 11, appealed to the
Ability Fund for assistance in
1951.
The road to self independence
started at Lyndhurst Lodge and
Toronto General Hospital where
she underwent intensive
physiotherapy and corrective
surgery • all financed by the
Ability Fund.
Dorothy returned to Stratford
where she now successfully
operates as a Publisher's Agent,
out of her apartment. In 1960, she
became secretary for the Ability
Fund's Central Western Ontario
campaigns.
Commenting on the Ability
Fund, Dorothy says, "It laid the
groundwork for my independence
in living and for pride and
fulfillment in work. I hope we can
