Don't send your boy to the arena. Take him.
That's a slogan that we hope will be practiced by
hundreds of parents in this area Saturday of this week.
This is the conclusion of Minor Hockey Week in Canada
and in three district centres Minor Hockey Day will be
featured.
Saturday, full day activities are being staged by
the Minor Hockey Associations in Exeter, Hensall and
Zurich.
At the Exeter arena, parents, relatives, neighbors
and friends of the more than 200 youngsters enrolled in
the local minor hockey program will be able to witness
thirteen full hours of hockey action with every boy
getting a chance to display his ice skills.
The action gets underway with Boston and
Montreal meeting in regular novice house league play at
nine o'clock. At ten it's New York and Vancouver in
another novice contest.
At eleven o'clock, the squirts, youngest of the
boys participating will be playing a game of their own.
Twelve o'clock noon has the Exeter mites taking
on St. Marys. The one and two o'clock time slots are set
aside for pee wee house league with the Bruins and
Mustangs• meeting in the first game and the Black Hawks
taking on the Barracudas in the second.

Hensall program
The program arranged for the Hensall arena by
the Hensall Minor Hockey Association gets going at ten
o'clock in the morning and will conclude about twelve
hours later.
The first two hours are devoted to house league
play with Boston and New York and Toronto and
Montreal meeting in regular schedule play.
The exhibition games with outside opposition
starts at 1:30 with the Hensall and Exeter bantams
meeting.
At 2:30, the spotlight is on the pee wees with
Huron Park supplying the opposition. The 3:30 time
slot has the Seaforth midgets in against the Hensall
boys.
The evening program starts at 6:30 with Ilderton
coming in for a novice game. At 7:30, the youngest
boys in the Hensall ice program, the beginners will put
on a half-hour show in their own way.
At eight o'clock, members of the Hensall figure
skating club will put on an exhibition of their artistic
skills.
The final game of the night will put the Hensall
and Goderich juveniles against each other at 8:30.
Admission for the full day will be one dollar for
adults, fifty cents for students and twenty-five cents for
children.
Minor Hockey Day in Zurich will also feature all
of the Zurich hocl-ey teams and all boys registered in
the hockey program.
We would like to urge all hockey fans in the three
areas to get out to their arenas for at least a few hours
Saturday.
Your presence will not only help the sponsoring
groups with their finances but give the boys much
needed moral support as they continue with their
hockey careers.
The Exeter Hawks take to the
ice six times in the next ten days
to wind up the regular schedule in
the Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" Western grouping
and the league champion may not
be declared until the final game
is played.
At the moment, the Belmont
Sunsets lead the local Hawks by a
single point, but the Belmont
team has only four games left as
compared to the six remaining on
the Hawks schedule.
The Hawks were in Lambeth
last night, Wednesday to meet the
fifth place Flyers, Lambeth will
be back at the Exeter arena
Friday night, the Hawks travel to
Tavistock for a Sunday contest
and will be at home at the Exeter
arena, Tuesday night for an
important meeting with the
Belmont Sunsets.
In their fifth game in quick
succession, the Hawks are at
home to the Clinton Mustangs on
Friday, February 4 and travel to
Belmont for the final game the
following Sunday.
In this week's play, the Hawks
downed the Clinton Mustangs 8-5
Friday night and edged the
Lucan Irish 4- 1 in Lucan,
Sunday afternoon.
Get more shots
The Hawks were full value for
their 4-1 win in Lucan Sunday
afternoon as they outshot the
Irish by a count of 43-33 in a fast
moving contest that was well
handled by referees John Slota
and Bill Shaddick.
The Exeterclub displayed a well
rounded out performance with
four players sharing in the
scoring.
The first period ended in a 1-1
tie. Ron Lindenfield put the
Hawks ahead at the 11.52 mark on
a play started by captain Larry
Haugh. Less than two minutes
later the score was all tied up
when Dennis Carty blinked the
light behind the Exeter net on an
unassisted effort.
The actual winning goal came
from the stick of Bob Parsons
midway through the second
period with help coming from
Ron Janke and Brian Campbell.
Only 18 seconds later, the
were held to a 4-4 tie by the Erie,
Pennsylvania Lions.
The Erie Lions and Lima
Chargers play in the same
American league.
Good second period
A four goal spurt in the second
period allowed the Jets to post
Friday's 5.1 win over Aylmer.
The Jets took a 1-0 lead in the
first period as Doug Galloway
scored on a three-way com-
bination with Jack Nairn and Ran
Cauduro.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets with
an undefeated record of 22 games
face tough opposition in their only
start this week.
The Jets travel to Lima, Ohio
Saturday to face the Lima
Chargers, a semi-pro club.
The win total of the Jets rose to
21 as they dumped Point Edward
Easy Movers 8-2 Thursday and
edged the Aylmer Blues 5-1 at
Huron Park, Friday night.
The only blemish on an
otherwise perfect record came
early in the season when the Jets
Wrestlers win again,
pin all oppositi on Craig ahead
in Ausable on February 11 and the WOSSA
championships slated for
Saturday, February 19 at the
South Huron gymns.
Close to 300 wrestlers from 50
schools from London, Huron,
Perth, Lambton, Oxford, Elgin
and Middlesex will be par-
ticipating in the WOSSA meet
here.
Three of the four L-I second
period scores came on passing
plays involving three players in
less than four minutes of play.
The first came from the stick of
Bill Dunnell with Bill Bourne and
Doug Galloway providing the
passes.
Next came a successful shot by
Pete Loveless with assists going
to Ron Cauduro and Bill White.
Jack Nairn finished the three
goal spurt on a play started by
Steve Proctor and Bill Dunnell.
The final Jet goal of the game
came from Steve Storey with help
from Nairn. The only Aylmer
goal was notched by John Grif-
fith.
Speedsters lead
The Jets 8-2 win in Point
Edward, Thursday was led by the
speedy forward line of Jamie
Robb, Jacques Cousineau and
Steve Proctor.
Proctor and Robb each scored
on two occasions while Cousineau
fired one goal and added three
'assists to account for a good
portion of the scoring.
The other L-I goals were fired
by Jack Nairn, Dick Doughty and
Larry Willert.
The rough contest produced a
total of 30 penalties with the Point
Edward club being assessed 19.
Lorne Daer was in goal for both
games by the Jets.

Ailsa Craig downed Shipka 3-1
Sunday night to take over first
place in the Ausable Valley Rec
hockey league.
The Craig club has a total of 17
points, two more than the runner-
up Shipka club. Brinsley follows
in third place with seven points
while Lieury trails in the cellar
with a five point record,
In Sunday's other game, Lieury
outscored Brinsley 6-4.
Bob Donaldson, Joe Regier and
Dave Collins scored . in single
fashion to pace the Ailsa Craig
win. The only Shipka score came
from the stick of Ron Mason.
Sonny Slater with a hat trick
performance was the top scorer
for Lieury. Louis Slater was next
in line with two goals to his credit
while John Butterfield added a
single.
Notching one goal each for
Brinsley were Bob Hodgins, Paul
Hodgson, George Tryon and Wes
Hodgson.
Aged goal tenders
Saturday's telecast hockey game from
Bloomington, Minnesota probably set a record for the
oldest goal tenders in action in one National Hockey
League game.
At one end of the rink in goal for the Toronto
Maple Leafs was Jacques Plante who celebrated his 43rd
birthday only recently.
Handling the net chores at the other end was
42-year-old Gump Worsley. This makes a combined age
of 85 and the way they both handled themselves, next
year at this time the same situation could occur and we
will up that age record to 87.

school boys basketball teams

The wrestling team at South
Huron District high school
continued its winning ways this
week and in doing so disposed of
some top notch competition.

ference play, the defeated
Central Huron of Clinton and
Stratford Central by respective
scores of 73-6 and 75-6,

Canucks fly high
Despite the recent airlines strike, the Vancouver
Can-ticks will fly more miles this season than any other
NHL team. The Canucks are expected to travel 70,128
miles in the air this season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to travel
only 38,200 miles, the least of any of the big league
teams. The average mileage for each NHL team this
season is expected to be 46,869 miles.
Football rule change
We read with interest a recent story from the
Middlesex County football high school conference
regarding some rule changes that will go into effect for
the 1972 season.
The five team league which includes North
Middlesex of Parkhill will adopt the four down system
which is used in the OM and in American football.
They will also eliminate the one yard neutral zone
between the opposing lines.
We contacted Ron Bogart, physical education
director and senior football coach at South Huron
regarding the changes,
Bogart said he was not in favour of the four down
system as it would put more pressure on the defence,
Instead he would welcome some changes in our kicking
rules, especially unlimited blocking on punts.
This would allow blocking as soon as the ball is
kicked. Now blocking may only begin when the ball is
touched by the receiver.
