Contributions given by the people and churches in Western Ontario in 1971 amounted to the highest ever total of $100,880.78. An appeal has been going forward for a new building for the Society's District offices and Scripture Distribution Centre in London, but this is not included in the above figures, "It is most gratifying to us to know that people are supporting both the general work and the new building fund," said Kenneth A. The responsibility of ad- ministering welfare in all Huron County municipalities was taken over by John MacKinnon, director of Huron County Social Services on January 2, Under the new system the known method of handling welfare is removed from the municipal level where formerly clerks were usually the local welfare officers. It actually replaces 26 local offices. Working with Mr, MacKinnon will be two field workers, Howard Hackwell at Walton and Charles Hay at Hensel Those seeking assistance should now contact any of these three. A personal call, a letter or telephone call will generally suffice. In the event of an emergency case, the former local welfare officer may issue temporary assistance, but any action taken must have the approval of head office at Goderich. Mr. MacKinnon said that under Plan cards at Elimville By MRS. ROSS SKINNER EL1MVILLE The January meeting of the Elimville Women's Institute was held Wednesday afternoon at the Elitnville hall. The president, Mrs. Elson Lynn, conducted the opening and business, It was decided to have euchre parties this winter every two weeks beginning January 24 at 8:15. Mrs, Lynn was appointed to be delegate to attend 75th an- niversary celebration in Toronto later in February. A committee of Mrs, Howard Pym & Mrs. Emerson Penhale were appointed to look after the Exeter Fair display. The Institute will cater to the "Bill Routly Home Night" at Usborne Central School this Week. The program, Home Economics and Health, was convened by Mrs. Ross Skinner. Several humorous poems were read on Dieting and a skit was presented on Self-Pity. Mrs, Howard Pym showed slides of the trip through Western Provinces her family had en- joyed last summer. Physical exercises were to be done following the meeting, but it was decided to have them Monday evenings beginning at 8 p,m., January 17, every other week through the winter months. The second the county system, the issuing of assistance will prove more equitable to all recipients. He said that a few of the counties in Ontario have adopted this system and found it very satisfactory. The change in the system will not have any affect on the basis of assistance available. Under the General Welfare Assistance Act, the amounts remain the same regardless of how and from where the applications come.
