"What I read in the pre-
sentence report doesn't suggest a
probation term," the Judge said,
adding that the information
suggested to him that Lee would
possibly only waste the probation
officer's time.
He finally decided to set Lee's
case over until February 4,
asking the probation officer to
keep in touch with the situation,
The terms of probation for the
other four were that they are to
report to a probation officer once
every two weeks or as often as
the officer requires and that they
are not to associate with each
other.
In the case of Brock, whose car
was used for the escapade, Judge
Hays added the stipulation that
residents
hospitals
Shiela Willert received a tea
pot for having achieved advanced
honors in 4-H.

Suspended sentence, probation

Four of five youths who had

year-old Robin Lee, Exeter,
Judge Hays, who had given a
pre-sentence report on all five,
told Lee, "I haven't made up my

he was riot to drive a car except
for farming operations, or at
times when either his father or
mother were with him, or with
the permission of the probation
officer,
Judge Hays warned the four
that a breach of the terms of their
probation would land them back
in court and sentences could be
passed on the charges of van-
dalism and wilful damage laid
against them.
He also ordered that
Jories,Elliott and Phillips visit
the persons who owned property
damaged by them and make
apologies.
It was learned that Brock and
Lee had already made apologies
and had made restitution for the
damages caused by them.
The five youths had been
charged following police in-
vestigation into a number of
incidents on November 6 and 7
when stones and mail boxes were
tossed through windows; doors,
mail boxes and road signs were
chopped down with axes; and a
Bell Telephone repeater main-
tenance cabinet was entered and
one wire cut, resulting in the loss
of service for Dashwood area
residents.
Brock had 18 convictions for
damage under $50 and five over
$50; Lee had 16 and five; Jones
had seven and two and Elliott and
Phillips had two under $50 each.
"Rarely in my years have I run
across a person--or group of
persons--who have committed as
many offences," Judge Hays said
in his address to the youths,
"It's a very disturbing thing,"
he added, noting he was par-
ticularly bothered about the fact
occupants of dwelling houses
were "almost terrorized" in their
own homes.
"It is reprehensible and above
comprehension how there could
be such contempt for other
people," he stated,
Duty Counsel P.L. Raymond
agreed it was beyond being a
prank or lark and said he could
not explain the youths' actions,
and in fact they could not either.
Crown Attorney W.G. Cochrane
urged Judge Hays to consider a
penalty that was severe noting
the deterrent aspect must be
given prime consideration,
Three others
There were only three other
cases on the docket.
One of the youths, Elliott,
appeared and pleaded guilty to
charge of creating unnecessary
noise in Exeter on October 5. He
was fined $40 and costs of $3.
Wayne Douglas Eden, London,
was fined $15 and costs $3 on a
charge of speeding at a rate of 75
in a 60 zone,
Irvin B. Freeman, who pleaded
not guilty to moving his vehicle
when it was unsafe to do so, was
found guilty and fined $20,
