Taking part in the service will be Theological and Arts students from Huron College, University of Western Ontario. The singing, accompanied by guitars, will be led by Paul Taylor, BA, of Cleveland, who is presently studying theology at Huron. Ken Anderson, MA, of Exeter, also a theology student at Huron, will conduct the service. Another student, Peter Wickerson, BA, will give the address, He is a former high school teacher and a man who stresses the practical side of Christianity. His direct approach should appeal to all young people. Surprise guest at Exeter United Church Fellowship group, Sunday night, was Bob Okine, an anglican clergyman from Ghana, who is presently doing post graduate work at Huron College. The program, patterned after TV's Front Page Challenge had a panel consisting of Arnold Ma thers, Pat Down, Gerry Godbolt and Alice McLean. They were askedto identify the country from which the unseen guest came and something he had brought with him to show them. They identified the continent of Africa but had some difficulty in guessing the name of the country, Ghana, and the Kenta, the native . costume, Mr, Okine had brought to show them. Later, in an informal and engaging manner, Bob told the members of some of the triumphs and trials of his country. He said, "The church in Ghana has grown_ in enthusiasm and interest in the last two or three years. "For a few years the people took as their examples the intellectuals who went to the continent to be educated and came back with no use for the churches,However, they soon found out these people didn't have all the answers and interest in things religious began to in- crease," Mr. Okine pointed out to his listeners that when the country of Ghana was created 50 languages were spoken in the area which was given its geographic bound- aries by the British. "It was a collection of many tribes and English was made the official language," Ghana was granted her in- dependence in 1957 but through mismanagement of government is now heavily in debt. The lack of money causes many hardships. For instance, 40 percent of all children die within the first years of their lives. The speaker said superstition has always run rife in Ghana and even to-day many well educated people check with their witch doctors before entering a hospital. Many of the old customs remain, A husband still has to buy his wife. What he pays for her depends largely on how much her parents have invested in her. It is not unusual for a girl to work and save the money to give her fiance her cost from her parents. "Extended families have always been the thing in my country," Mr. Okine stated, "and in most instances the grand- parents still raise the children." Hopes to bring wife over This was not the first visit to Exeter by Bob Okine. Gideons to blitz north with Bibles Has the Canadian North been ignored for too long by Canadians The Gideons think so and are now in the midst of a "Bible the North" campaign aimed at placing copies of the Bible and New Testament in northern sehools, hotels, hospitals and prisons. The Northwest Territories thrust will be headed by a newly- formed Camp, or local group of the Gideons, based in Yellowknife, N.W.T, Entering their first year as an official Camp - the first in the Canadian North - the 10-man team plans to place copies of the Scriptures wherever a multiple readership is possible. The Gideons are already known for such work in other parts of Canada and the United States, They distribute 225,000 copies of the New Testament to children in the Grade V classes of Canadian schools each year alone! And, of course, the familiar Gideon Bible which is placed in thousands of hotels and motels, is a companion to many travellers all over North America. The Gideons are an in- ternational, non-denominational body of men who believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. As active Christian laymen, they act as an extension of the Christian Church and number nearly 2,500 in Canadaand more than 33,000 world-wide. graduate course at Huron under the auspices of the missionary project of the Huron diocese. He is married and has two children, one of whom he has never seen. Bob hopes to bring his wife to Canada during his last year here so she may take a course to improve her em- ployment skills, One thing Ghana seems to have in common with Canada is that it often takes two pay cheques to keep a family going these days.
