Busy time
ahead
The next couple of months should be very busy
and interesting as far as sporting and outdoor events are
concerned.
The parade of events will be started a week from
this coming weekend when students at South Huron
District High School will participate in their annual
Winter Carnival.
The following week, the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association will be presenting their annual Minor
Hockey Day on Saturday, January 29 at the Exeter
arena.
The weekend of February 12 and 13 will be a big
one at the Pineridge Chalet, near Hensall. The Chalet a
popular snowmobiling spot will again present their
annual Crippled Kids program,
During this time, crippled children from all parts
of Western Ontario along with London's Timmy are in
attendance and are the honored guests. The feature of
this event will again be barbecued moose and venison
that has been donated by district sportsmen and
hunters.
The high school carnival will get underway Friday
night January 21 with a dance in the school gymnasium.
Following the dance a midnite movie will be presented.
A coffee house atmosphere will be created in some of
the hall areas of the school.
Saturday morning things get off to a brisk start
with another movie at seven o'clock. Breakfast will
follow in the school cafeteria.
The balance of the daylight hours will be filled
with snowmobile, snowshoe, skiing races along with
other novelty events.
Late Saturday afternoon, a popular contest at
previous events of this nature will be repeated. This is
the pancake eating contest and is sure to find a new
bunch of hungry students ready to try their appetites to
the fullest.
In Friday's activities we forgot to mention that a
Snow Queen and King will be crowned at the dance.
Using the same procedure as last year, the King and
Queen will be selected by a lucky draw. The names of
each couple attending the dance will be put into a draw
and the first names pulled out will preside over the
balance of the carnival.
Saturday night students will be able to hear a
concert presented by the Cream Cheese Good Time
Band. Student Council president Doug Mock tells us this
is a top notch musical group.
If anyone has any energy left by ten o'clock
Saturday night they will be able to participate in a
skating party at the Exeter arena that will continue until
two o'clock Sunday morning.
The fun-filled weekend will conclude with a third
movie, Sunday afternoon. Sounds like an exciting
weekend. See you there.
Full hockey program
The local observance of Minor Hockey Day will
provide a lot of hockey action with a total of thirteen
games on tap with boys of all ages taking part.
Activities will start at nine in the morning and
will conclude thirteen hours later with the completion
of the midget all-star game.
The full day program includes mites, squirts,
novice and pee wee in house league action with two
Exeter clubs in each of the novice, pee wee, bantam and
midget ranks meeting outside competitors,
The annual carnival presented by members of the
Exeter figure skating club has been scheduled for
Saturday, February 26 with another good program lined
up.
Club president Jack Underwood tells us the guest
skater will be Julie Bowerman, a native of WoodStock,
now skating out of the Cricket Club in Toronto.
While a title for the carnival hasn't been decided
on yet, Underwood said it would have a Canadian theme
with numbers depicting scenes across Canada and into
the North.
Several mystery comedy acts are again being lined
up. This part of the program was very entertaining last
year.
While on the subject of figure skating, there is still
time to get tickets for the last couple days of the
Canadian Figure Skating championships being held in
London at the Gardens.
Of interest to local figure skating enthusiasts, at
least five skaters that have participated in previous
carnivals here are competing in the Canadian trials.
They include Ron Shaver, Cheri and Dennis
Pinner and Judy Curraugh and Keith Caughell.
Canadians on U.S. TV
The Columbia Broadcasting System has again
started their Sunday afternoon Game of the Week
hockey telecasts.
Doing the play by play is Canadian sportscaster
Dan Kelly. Rumours have CBS trying to lure Howie
Meeker across the border to do the colour commentary.
Well travelled
A goodly number of professional hockey players
get to play with at least two or three different clubs
during their career but for veteran defenceman Larry
Hillman travelling from team to team is becoming a
habit.
Hillman was recently traded from Los Angeles to
the Buffalo Sabres and made his eleventh stop with an
NHL club.
The big defenceman has been a professional for
18 seasons. He has been traded or sold, nine times. This
along with demotions and promotions he has changed
uniforms 25 times.
Hillman was originally owned by Detroit. Chicago
drafted him, but waived him to Boston. Toronto then
drafted him and kept him for eight years, Next came a
claim from New York and then a Minnesota draft,
In quick succession it was a claim from
Pittsburgh, a trade to Montreal, a Philadelphia draft and
trade to the Los Angeles Kings before the latest trade to
Buffalo.
In between NHL stops, Hillman has played with
minor league clubs in Buffalo, Edmonton, Springfield,
Rochester and Providence.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets have
seen very little hockey action in
the past couple of weeks but this
situation will be remedied this
week.
The Jets who are playing an
exhibition schedule will be on the
ice four times in the next six
nights,
Tonight, Thursday the L-I club
will be in Point Edward to meet
Novice Broncos
get even break
The Exeter Broncos broke even
in two Shamrock and Intercounty
games this week and only one
goal separated the two teams in
each game.
Friday night at the Exeter
arena it was Belmont edging the
Exeter youngsters in an Inter-
county novice contest first defeat
of the Shamrock season by a 5-4
count.
In season play to date, the
Broncos have won 13 games, lost
eight and tied one in 22 league,
exhibition and tournament
games.
They will be at home to Lucan
tonight, Thursday will also host
St. Marys Friday night and meet
Huron Park in Lucan Saturday
afternoon.
The Broncos came from behind
with a rush Saturday as they
scored two goals in the last
minute and a half of play to edge
Lambeth by a single goal.
Dave Bogart scored the win-
ning goal on a slap shot from the
blueline with two Lambeth
players in the penalty box at
14,45.
Only 59 seconds earlier, Brian
Mercer had scored the tying goal,
his third of the afternoon with the
assist going to David Cann. The
other Exeter goal was registered
by Dan Bell with Cann again
helping out.
In the 4-3 loss to Belmont, the
second of the season by the same
score, the Broncos scoredonce• in
each period. Dan Bell scored in
each of the first and second
sessions with Dave Bogart
marking the final score.

trip to Paris and Tuesday night
the Jets will be in Aylmer.
In their latest play, the Jets
disposed of the Simcoe County
Kings by an 11-1 count at the
Huron Park arena, Friday night.
Defencemen score
The last six goals in the Jets
romp over Simcoe were scored
by defencemen with former
Exeter Hawksdoing most of the
damage. With the Jets leading 5-1
late in the second period, the
rearguards swung into action.
Barry Baynham was the first
blueliner to hit the mark at 17.25.
In rapid succession in the final
frame Baynham, hit with his
second, Bill Bourne fired in two
shots and Larry Willert and team
manager Don Urbshott notched
singles.
Most of the goals scored by the
defencemen came on slap shots
from the blueline as the Simcoe
club was unable to get the puck
out of their own end.
The final goal of the game
came on a reverse situation with
forward Jamie Robb letting a log
shot go and Urbshott was near
the net to tip the puck in. •
The Jets top scorer of the night
Jack Nairn and Ken Loft.
While he failed to score any
goals, Terry Bourne had a
productive night with no less than
six assists.
