Help for young farmers
asked by Huron .Federation
Some farmers have applied to
lease land through ARIDA and
after much delay find that
AHDA will not assist them in
procuring land, or will not pay
enough for the land, that the
farmer can enter a contract of
lease without risking con-
siderable additional capital.
Is there not some way that the
farmer could be given this in-
formation at an earlier time in
negotiations.
More clarifications as to who is
qualified to purchase through
A R D A would be helpful, Can a
man who has a viable farm at
present add to his holdings in this
way? Or is this program intended
for those who require land to
bring their operation tip to the
point of viability. It appears that
there are many people who are
not clear on this point and that
specific guidelines should be laid
down.
Also I would like to bring to
your attention the concern of
many farmers as to the length of
time that is taken to process an
ARDA transaction. Some
transactions are known to have
taken as long as a year and a half
to finalize. Could there be some
way of speeding up this
process?"

Better job
in marketing
In a brief address to the
executive members of the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
in Clinton recently, Ontario
Federation president Gordon Hill
of Varna said "it would be much
easier if farmers income came
completely from the market
place rather than help in sub-
sidies,"
During the meeting, all com-
modity groups of the Huron
Federation presented their an-
nual briefs to the area members
of parliament,
Continuing Hill said, "We need
to do a better job in marketing
and in organizing ourselves. The
average income of ' farmers
should be increased by one
thousand dollars per year,' but
this would cost more than 450
million dollars."
On marketing, the Ontario
president said, "We need our
provincial boards to get together
nationally." We have seen a
great achievement in all
provincial agriculture ministers
agreeing to a wide reaching
document."
Hill who was forced to leave the
meeting early due to com-
mitments on the provincial
level, praised the Huron F of A
for originating the meetings with
MP's. He said this is one way to
let the government know what
each committee would like to see
implemented in farm policy.
Other counties are following in
Huron's footsteps,"
Attending the meeting were
Huron-Bruce MPP Murray
Gaunt and Robert McKinley,
Huron's representative in the
federal parliament.
Huron MPP, C. S. Mac-
naughton was unable to attend
due to other commitments,

One problem that appears to be
hampering the farm industry was
brought to light in three different
briefs presented by commodity
groups of the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture in their
annual 4. meeting with area
memberS of parliament.
liurortpresident Mason Bailey,
vice-pre, ident Mervin Smith and
cream committee chairman
Lloyd Stewart emphasized the
lack of opportunities for young
men who wish to work at the
industry of farming.
Bailey in his opening brief said,
"The high cost of establishing a
profitable farm enterprise is
discouraging young people from
entering agriculture. The limited
credit for starting a farming
enterprise is not much use to
most young people. Unless
something significant is done by
government soon to overcome
this difficulty, agriculture can
easily fall into the control of
wealthy corporations."
Mervin Smith on the same
subject said, "With the average
age of farmers around 55 years of
age, it is imperative that there be
a program to assist farmers'sons
to get started, This could mean
many farmers could be assisted
by being able to work with the
same machinery as their sons
and help to keep the high cost of
capital somewhat lower,"
"Under the present plans it
seems that it has to be a part-
nership or corporation of some
sort. Many farmers have sons
ready and willing to farm but are
not in a financial position to set
them up."
The Huron cream committee
brief echoed the same ideas on
the problems encountered by
potential young farmers. .
Chairman Lloyd Stewart said,
"No matter what line of farming
a young man wishes to go into,
whether it be cream, dairy, beef
etc., the government does not
provide help to get started far-
ming. They do offer help to an
established farmer through
loans, but to a young man who
wishes to carry on the family
farm the borrowed amount would
be so great, he could never hope
to rise above it."
Considerable discussion
developed on ways to make the
job of getting started easier for
the young farmer.
Huron-Bruce MP Murray
Gaunt suggested that an ex-
tension of the ARDA program to
allow young people to participate
could be one avenue,
ARDA now has a limit of
$15,000 for purchase of 100 acres
of land without buildings. Gaunt
added, "ARDA doesn't like to buy
land with buildings because of the
problem of maintenance."
During the discussion, one
member who said the Farm
Credit Corporation has a limit of
$40,000 on one farm added, "They
seem to be more interested in
security than the farmers ability
to pay back,"
On the same subject Huron's
director to the OFA Vince Austin
said he welcomed the opportunity
to speak on behalf of faraters
with regard to leasing and pur-
chasing land through ARDA. "I
believe there is some confusion
as to the purpose and intent Of
this program and that
classification on several points
could be beneficial to all con-

How does a pork producer
survive financially in these days
of low prices and rising costs?
Louis Longo, a well known
Connecticut dairy farmer
speaking at the recent Ontario
Silage Conference, says "Far-
mers must work smarter not
harder" under todays conditions.
Planning, cost control and
quality improvement are more
important now than ever before
particularly since more
operations are paying off new
barns, feed storages and
equipment and other fixed
overhead items.
These factors have been taken
into account in planning a two-
day short course for swine far-
mers. Offered by the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food, the course will be held on
Wednesday, January 19 and
Thursday, January 20, 1972 at
Centralia College of Agricultural
Technology, Huron Park,
Ontario. Sessions begin at 9:30
a.m, and end by 4:30 p.m. each
day.
A partial list of the topics to be
discussed include: The pork
industry — what makes it tick?,
What's happening in the market
place?, Swine reproduction, A.I.

ARDA plans
land use study
The Hon. Wm. A. Stewart,
Ontario Minister of Agriculture
and Food, and the Hon. Jean—
Marchand., Canada Minister of e:
Regional Economic Expansion,
announced recently plans by
ARDA for an agricultural land
use study in southern Ontario.
The findings of the study would
provide guidelines for for-
mulating public planning policy
with emphasis on the preser-
vation of suitable agricultural
land for future food
requirements. The specific ob-
jectives of the research are:
1. to assemble the information
available in a form that will be
useful to decide which areas
should be committed to
agriculture,
2. to identify the key factors
affecting agricultural land use
and the directions of change over
the next 20 years,
3. to determine the interactions
between agriculture and the
environment, and
4. to suggest priorities and
identify the policy issues and
their means of implementation.
Although Ontario still has
surplus agricultural land to fill
present food needs, urban and
industrial demands for land are
increasing in parts of southern
Ontario. Since land converted
from agriculture to urban and
industrial uses cannot be
retrieved, plans must be in-
stituted now to preserve
agricultural land required for
future food production,
This study will be undertaken
by a team of researchers from
the University of Guelph and will
be completed in about 6 months.
