The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1972-01-06, Page 6The Exeter Hawks proved on two occasions over the holidays they are a third period hockey club as they chalked up a pair of victories in come-from-behind fashion. The Hawks edged Clinton 7-5 after being behind 4-1 early in the second period, Tuesday night and used the same method Sunday afternoon to dispose of the Mit- chell Hawks by a 9-6 score. Sunday's win accomplished with six consecutive third period goals pulled the Hawks into second place tie with the clinton Mustangs in the Ontario Hockey Association Western Junior "D" grouping. Each club has 23 points. The Belmont Sunsets are in first place with a 24 point total. The Hawks have played two fewer games than the Clinton club. The Hawks will be at home to the Lambeth Flyers at the Exeter arena Friday night at 8:30 and travel to Belmont for an im- portant Sunday engagement with the Sunsets. Lambeth and Mitchell are tied for fourth place in the league standings with 19 points each while the Lucan Irish winless in their last three starts are sixth with 17 points. The Tavistock Braves trail in the cellar with a total of only nine points. Campbell leads It took the Hawks only eleven minutes to wipe out a three goal deficit Sunday afternoon and post the 9-6 win over their namesakes from Mitchell. Brian Campbell scored three times to account for half the late game Exeter scoring. Mitchell who scored four of their six goals while an Exeter performer was in the penalty box scored the only goal of the first period with Don Hislop the Juniorliff HOCKEYEXETER ARENA Lambeth Flyers vs Exeter Hawks Friday, Jan, 7 }8:30 p.m. January Clearance 2 1972 COMPANY DEMONSTRATORS 1 IMPALA SPORT COUPE 1 BEL AIR 4 DOOR SEDAN SAVE HUNDREDS NOW OK USED CARS 1969 OLDS DELTA CUSTOM SEDAN power equipped, low mileage, License K32131 1969 DODGE POLARA 2-door hardtop, power equipped, vinyl roof, License K35508 1969 CHEVROLET BISCAYNE 8 cyl. sedan, vinyl roof, low mileage, License K34108 1968 CHEVROLET IMPALA SPORT COUPE power equipped, vinyl interior, License K62613 1968 FORD FAIRLANE 2-door hardtop, 6 cyl. automatic, License K45685 1967 CH EVELL E MALIBU SPORT COUPE buckets and console, License J89733 1966 PONTIAC PAR ISIENNE SEDAN power steering, License K60987 1965 VALIANT DELUXE 4-DOOR SEDAN automatic, radio, License K31661 SNELL BROS. By Boos Haugh Novice busy during holidays compete in two tourneys Same formula Last year's Exeter Hawks hockey club that went to the Ontario "D" finals before bowing to the Haliburton Huskies in a seven game series were well known for their come-from-behind wins, The current Hawk edition under the capable coaching of Bob White has inherited the same feature from the 1970-71 team and possibly added a little bit, In most of their eleven wins this year and particularly in the last two, the Hawks have come roaring back from large-sized deficits to post victories. Sunday afternoon on home ice against the Mitchell Hawks, the local juniors found themselves behind 6-3 early in the third period. All of a sudden they caught fire and before the final bell rang, the score was 9-6 for the home club, It was pretty well the same story in Clinton on the Tuesday between Christmas and New Years. They let the Mustangs gain a good lead and then started to produce goals in bunches to win going away. This ability to overcome deficits is one that is hard to come by and many hockey clubs would like to copy the successful formula devised by Bob White and his charges. Credit must go not only to the coach but every member of the club. The youngsters never give up despite any position they may find themselves in. Report on deer hunt A recent communique from the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests gives the results of the recently concluded deer seasons in Huron and other neighbouring counties. During the three day deer season held in Huron from November 1 to 3 inclusive, a total of 325 hunters reported a harvest of 20 deer during 585 man days. This was a success rate- of 6.15 percent with an effort of 29.2 man days for each deer. There was no open season for deer in Huron in 1970. In Grey county during the same three day period, a total of 645 hunters were checked who had harvested 69 deer for a success rate of 9.15 percent. These hunters had hunted for 995 days, an effort of 14.4 man days per deer. In six townships in Bruce county the success race was higher with a percentage of 11.53. A success rate from 5 to 10 percent is usual for agricultural portions of Southern Ontario. Higher success rates are experienced in the more heavily wooded areas of the province. A good rule The rules committee of the National Hockey league certainly hit a good formula when they put teeth into their new rule pertaining to players entering a fight. :Most of the recent NHL games on television have been -very interesting and entertaining, due mostly to the lack of fights, especially the drawn-out ones. -We hope fights will continue to be an important part of our national pastime, but we can certainly do without the brawls that have been known to last for fifteen minutes or more. The new rule that assesses game misconduct penalties and automatic fines to players that become the third, fourth or more combatant in a fight has had a lot to do with the speeding up of most professional games. In Saturday night's game on TV, two players started a small scrap, but all other players on the ice at the time just stood by and watched. This also makes the job of the referee and linesmen much easier as they only have one battle to watch or try to contain at any one given moment. Minor hockey day The annual observance of Minor Hockey Day in Exeter will be held on Saturday, January 29. Arena manager Alvin Willert will be making quick preparations for a full day's schedule of games. Information from the Canadian. Amateur Hockey Association on the proposed dates was only received this week. It is expected regular house league games will be played along with exhibition games for all of the town's all-star teams. Separate school clinic Boys attending all separate schools under the jurisdiction of the Huron-Perth board will get the benefit of improved coaching skills. Wednesday, a clinic for coaches and physical education instructors of all separate schools in the area is being held at the Stratford arena. Included in the group is Bill Regier of Mount Carmel and Mike Morrison, a teacher at Precious Blood school in Exeter. Morrison will be taking an active part in the clinic by conducting a seminar on refereeing. The clinic under the supervision of John McCarroll will cover all aspects of hockey fundamentals in addition to selection of proper equipment and first aid. Hawks 4-3 in the second period and added another early in the final session, The Exeter goals in the middle frame were fired by Steve Murley, Pete Glover and Peter Kleinstiver. Hislop fired two more successful shots in the second to bring his game total to a hat trick and Art Strohm and Jim Avery added single goals. Avery scored again for Mit- chell at 3.36 of the third to put the local Hawks three goals behind. At 5.05 Brian Campbell started the ball rolling on a passing play with Bob Rowe and Ron Janke. Then in quick order it was Ron Lindenfield from Murley and Jim Guenther and Campbell with his second goal with Rowe and Shane McKinnon helping out to tie the score. The actual winning goal came from the stick of Perry Stover on a play started by Peter Klein- stiver at 9.42. Less than two minutes later, Steve Murley registered the insurance marker with Pete Glover and Ron Lindenfield providing the necessary passes._ Campbell put the icing on the cake with a shot past Dan Campbelton in the Mitchell nets at 16.43 to complete his three goal effort. Exeter defenceman Shane McKinnon suffered a fractured ankle during the third period action and will be lost to the club for six or seven weeks. Same story In Clinton Tuesday, December 28 it was the same story with the Hawks to hit the scoring column with any regularity until the Mustangs were ahead 4-1. The Lucan-Ilderton Jets made their only appearance during the holiday season a winning one by downing the Langton-Delhi Leafs 4-1 in Langton, Friday night. A week earlier, the Jets ran roughshod over the Point Edward Easy Movers by a score of 16-0. The Jets will be back in action tomorrow night, Friday at the Huron Park arena when they take on the Simcoe Country Kings. During the Lucan-Ilderton win over Langton all scoring was confined to the first two periods with the Jets running up a three goal lead in the first twenty minutes of play. The game was only a minute old when Jack Nairn took a pass from Doug Galloway and found an opening in the Langton net. At the halfway mark, defen- The only Exeter goal of the first period came from the stick of Steve Murley after Stu Mustard, Bill Stirling and John McKinley had scored for the Mustnags. The two clubs traded single goals early in the second period to keep Clinton in front by two goals. Captain Cook registered for the Mustangs and Peter Kleinstiver completed a suc- cessful three-way passing effort with Brian Bestard and Ron Janke. TheHawksthen caught fire and scored four consecutive goals in less than six minutes to go ahead to stay. Steve Murley notched the first of four Hawk scores with Ron Lindenfield and Jim Guenther assisting. Ron Lindenfield was on the scoreboard quickly with two shots that found the mark. Larry Haugh assisted on the first score and Pete Glover helped on the second. Brian Campbell wound up the second period Exeter scoring with a goal at 13.10. Bob Rowe and Shane McKinnon originated the scoring play. With time running out in the second period, Stu Mustard scored for the Mustangs to cut the Hawks lead to a single goal. Third period scoring was confined to lone Exeter goal fired by Perry Stover with the assist going to McKinnon. The game produced only 19 penalties, all of the minor variety with the Hawks tal-ing ten calls. The last two Clinton goals came with the Hawks short-handed while the Hawks were able to score once on a power play. ceman Don Urbshott blasted in a slap shot from the blue line on a play started by his defence partner Barry Baynham and Dick Doughty. With only six seconds left to play in the initial session, Dick Doughty put the Jets three goals up on an unassisted effort with a quick wrist shot from about thirty feet out. The only Langton goal of the game came early in the second period when Mark Boughner put the puck past Don Stewart in the L-I net on a slap shot. The final score of the contest to give the Jets their 4.1 win was engineered on a three-way passing effort, Steve Proctor was the goal getter, flipping the puck over the Langton goalie from in close.
