It has been another year of harmony, generally speaking, I. I have enjoyed working with this year's council and their conscientious duty to their responsibilities has been commendable. So has the work of the planning board, committee of adjustment, RAP, the cemetery board and the industrial development commission. Special mention must certainly be made of the clerk and his assistant, as well as the staff members of the police, fire and works departments, arena, recreation, parks and cemetery. On behalf of the ratepayers I also extend appreciation to the many individuals who represent us on various groups and associations, as well as to the service clubs, lodges and other groups which assist the community in so many ways. To everyone in the community my Christmas wish is that each and every one of you experience the fullest joy of this yuletide season. CLERK HARRY STRANG ROAD SUPERINTENDENT BILL ROUTLY Exeter council this week shelved a request from Garr Rice Enterprises Ltd, to close to vehicular traffic the laneway which exists between his building (former Huxtable building) and the grocery store of Aljoe San- ders. In a letter to council, Garr Rice requested a hearing at council's meeting, but lie failed to show up. One person was in attendance to discuss the matter, Mrs. Ken Davidson, who managed G&G Discount, which operates out of the Rice building. She explained most of the trucks making deliveries at the store, as well as the other two stores in the building, use the laneway. "There are a lot of big trucks, every day," she told council, pointing out the problem that would be incurred if they could not use the lane. Council members weren't certain who owned the lane, The municipality apparently owns a small portion and Sanders also owns some. John Prescott, manager of Canadian Tire is going to Hollywood, California for the holiday season. Mrs. Beth Batten is visiting friends in Texas over the holidays. Mr. & Mrs, Charles Gifford and Hanna of Denver, Colorado, are visiting with Mr. & Mrs. Alf Wuerth for a few days, Council okay resolution Exeter council okayed a new year's resolution this week. They'll take action to crack down on people — particularly builders and contractors — who start building projects without securing building permits. Councillor Ken Ottewell said this week some builders are still not getting permits before they start. "They're people who should know better," Ottewell added, He suggested in the future council approve the building inspector immediately putting a "stop work" order on the projects, Council agreed this action should be taken. Ottewell later said there ap- peared to be some people who thought building permits were a means of controlling them. Actually, he said, they're only designed to protect people.
