One of the most poignant stories to come out of World War I happened on part of the Western Front on Christmas Eve, 1915. Men on both sides of the line were in their trenches trying to keep warm against the bitter cold of the frosty, moonlit Christmas poem By LANDAVISSCHER Grade 6 - Huron Centennial C is for Christ who was born in a manger H is for Herod who tried to kill baby Jesus R is for Rejoice when the baby was born is for I who like Christmas S is for Sin that Jesus took away T is for a Tree we put up at Christmas M is for Mary the mother of Jesus A is for Angels who sang in the sky S is for Shepherds abiding in the field. night. Shells leaped across the trenches and guns muttered and rumbled, up and down the line. Along toward the mystical hour of midnight an incredible thing occurred. Gradually the noise of the guns grew loss until a deep silence lay over the battlefield, It was mystic. The noise of battle gave way to infinite peace. In the silence there came from the German trenches the sound of singing. Softly at first but growing in volume until it swelled up and down the line. It was the old song of Christmas, "Sidle Nacht! Heihge Nacht!" As it died away there came from the British trenches, the sound of English voices singing the same song "Silent Night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright." Next, the German voices took up the song, "Oh little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!" and the British boys sang it right back. Season's Greetings ETHEL'S Beauty Salon Grand Bend 238-2412 OPEN ALL YEAR • o Spicy Meatballs in Sweet and Sour Sauce Meatballs may not sound like party fare but it all depends on the meatballs. The meatball has been much abused, its ad- vantages rarely cited. "Spicy meatballs in sweet and sour sauce" can be served in minutes if friends drop in after a party, for a family dinner if your schedule is tight, or for a cocktail or evening party you are giving. With such possibilities, meatballs take on a new look. Served as appetizers, the meatballs should be small, placed in a chafing dish with the sauce, ready for the guests to help themselves. Spicy Meatballs in Sweet and Sour Sauce, Serves about 8 2 pounds ground round steak 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 small potato, grated 2 teaspoons salt 12 teaspoon pepper 1 2 teaspoon thyme 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup 1 egg, slightly beaten 3 tablespoons Peanut Oil 1 (10 ounce) can tomato soup, undiluted 1 (14 ounce) can tomato sauce 2 tablespoons lemon juice 6 tablespoons brown sugar salt and pepper to taste Combine ground round, onion, potato, salt, thyme, ketchup, and slightly beaten egg and blend thoroughly; shape into small meatballs, Brown in hot peanut oil in a skillet, remove and set aside to add to prepared sauce. To prepare sauce, combine soup, sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, salt and pepper to taste in an electric frypan or deep skillet, Bring to a boil, stirring con- stantly, and immediately reduce heat to simmer. Taste for seasonings. Add meatballs, cover and cook for approximately 11.2 hours basting occasionally. Serve with rice and a green salad. Spicy meatballs can be frozen up to two weeks. Sonic of the German boys grew so excited they burst out of their trenches and ran across no man's land with hands outreached to the British. They were no longer soldiers. They were homesick German boys and lonely British boys who, in this great event, showed how the mystical power of Christmas can turn feelings of hate and despair into sublime feelings of' love and compassion. There is a mood about Christmas that sets men above the C0111177011, groser things. It is tied in with the deepest emotions of our lives. It is love, and hope anti faith. It's universal and comes to all colors of the human race. That first Christmas God laid a little baby on the doorstep of the world and when the baby cried, Humanity opened up its arms and took Him in. Each Christmas we still respond to this most awesome, wondrous act of God . . . His giving of His son to us. Hearts become softer, minds more reflective and emotions purer. When friends ask if I'm holding Christmas I usually answer "I hope I can." If only we could hold it, tie clown this marvellous spirit of Christmas and keep it forever, no power on earth could ever defeat its. To you all: readers, friends and relatives 1 make a sincere wish for a Very Merry Christmas. May God Bless Us Every One." qautfeweeett 71e60.1 Sunday afternoon, the residents were favoured with a religious concert given by the Salvation Army Band of Wingham and Goderich.
