Groups mark Christmas at GB

Orpha club
Mrs. Roy Flear was hostess for
the Orpha Christmas party last
Tuesday evening when 29 ladies
attended. The home was
decorated for the Christmas
season which set the mood for a
happy evening,
Mrs. J, Allister and Mrs.
Melvin Douglas were responsible
for entertainment, Games and
contests were enjoyed and 20

Two raffles were held; a Santa
Claus seat cover was won by Mrs.
W. Stokes and a net appliqued
Christmas tablecloth was won by
Mrs. M. Luther.
A Christmas lunch was served
convened by Mrs. Roy Flear,
Mrs. V. Burke and Mrs. W,
Thomson.
Several articles were handed in
to complete the Christmas
project for the Children's Aid.

White gift Sunday was well
attended at the United Church,
Primary and junior Sunday
School was in attendance and 30
little girls and boys grouped
themselves at the front of the
church to present their gifts and
sing Christmas carols,
Susan Fisher and Brenda
Desjardine read responsively the
first lesson from Luke. The
second lesson was read by David
Brenner and Robert Couse, also
responsively.
The Jr. Choir introduced two
new Christmas carols; "Take
Time" carol was sung with
triangle and piano ac-
companiment.
Thirty-one members of
Crediton W.I. celebrated 25 years
of reorganization and Christmas
with a smorgasbord dinner
December 8. An anniversary
cake and blue and gold
decorations decked the table.
Crediton W.I. was organized
April 4, 1919. May 31, 1943 it was
disbanded for three years and re-
organized November 21, 1946,
The minutes of the 1946
meeting were read.
Nine members receiving life
memberships were seated at the
front and recollections of service
was given, The President Mrs.
Bruce Shapton presented each
with a life membership cer-
tificate and Mrs. Gerald Dearing
presented their life •membership
badges.
Receiving them were: Mrs.
Wilfred Mack 48 years; Mrs.
Emmery Fahrner, 47 years; Mrs.
Aaron Wein, 41 yrs; Mrs. Clayton
Sims, 40 years; Mrs. Irvine Fink-
beiner, 38 years; Mrs. Gordon
Morlock, 38 years; Mrs. Leonard

The UCW met at the home of
Mrs. W. Baker in Southcott
Pines, Thursday afternoon for
their Christmas meeting,
Mrs. Susie Devine presented a
Christmas worship along with
carol singing.
Mrs, D, Warren of Crediton
was guest speaker her topic was
"Finding peace of mind and
soul",
Mrs. Wm. Love presided over
the business period,
Lunch was served to close the
meeting,
The Friendship and Visiting
Committee of the UCW are busy
these days visiting the shut-ins
and leaving a Christmas
remembrance with them.
Brownies
Monday. morning the Brownie
pack and leaders of Grand Bend
and area visited the nursery
school for retarded and han-
dicapped children,
Wein, 32 years; Mrs. Samuel
King, 25 years and Mrs. Walter
Weber, 25 years.
District president Miss Ruth
Skinner and district secretary-
treasurer, Mrs. Gilbert Johns,
were guests and brought
greetings from the district.
Final plans for the tour of
Dashwood Industries January 11
were made, Motions were passed
for two euchre parties in , 1972,
and for the birthday party at
Bluewater Rest home, November
1972.
Mrs. Charles Browning ac-
cepted a bank book and $1.00 for
her daughter Charlene Marie.
Mrs. Earl Neil was chairlady
for the program and read a poem.
Mrs. E. Lamport commented on
the motto "The past cannot be
changed but the future is in your
hands."
Wedding photos were on
display and unusual wedding day
incidents were recalled.
A play "Silver of Second Best,"
was enjoyed. Taking part was
Mrs. J. Finkbeiner, Mrs, E.
Lamport, Mrs. D. Davey, Mrs. E.
Neil and Mrs. C. Brow: :ng.
Carols were sung and Mrs. E.
Haist gave a reading.
Santa arrived and gave out the
mystery sisters' gifts and new
names were drawn.
Program committee was Mrs.
E. Neil, Mrs. E. Lamport, Mrs. J.
Finkbeiner and Mrs. E. Haist,
The Brownies sang Christmas
carols and played a motion song
game with the nursery pupils
participating.
The Brownies presented the
school with a miniature farm set
to be used at the school; each
pupil also received a chocolate
Santa Claus.
In return the nursery pupils
gave each Brownie a silver bell
which they had made.

December 13 the ladies of the
Catholic Women's League of the
Immaculate Heart Church en-
tertained a group of fifty-five
ladies from the various churches
in Grand Bend.
The group was welcomed by
the president, Mrs. Cornelius
Smeekens, who opened the
program with the group singing a
very appropriate song entitled
"Here We Are."
Program continued with Nancy
Backx and Mary Jean Ross
playing a duet on the piano.
Matilda Van Leeuwen played a
selection on the cord organ and a
humorous reading entitled "Poor
Paw" was given by Maryetta
Smeekens. There were two vocal
solos by Mrs. Philip Walker,
entitled "What Child is This" and
"Oh Holy Night".
The pianist for the evening was
Cathie Srokosz.
Father Boyer was the speaker
and spoke on "Prayer", stating
that there should be nothing
between us and God when we
pray, but that there always
seems to be something getting in
between. The whole life of Christ
involved in prayer, not only for
himself but for others. He cited
various experiences that people
had during his talk.
Several Christmas hymns were
sung during the program, which
closed with the group singing
"Silent Night".
The various church groups met
with their own members and
conducted their business,
Door prizes were won by Mrs,
Charles Srokosz and Miss Nancy
Backx.
The pleasant evening came to
an end with Mrs. E. J. Wattam
voicing the thanks of the group,
after which a lunch of Christmas
goodies was served.
