Every Christmas we get a few of those breezy family newsletters which, I confess always make me a little nauseous, The nauseousness is caused by jealousy of the purest and greenest variety. With gusto our friends herald us with accomplishments of kids who get, their ATCM at the age of 16, or who win goldmedals for dancing, public speaking or drama, at the same time passing their school work at the top of the class. These people usually have a daughter who's been campus queen for her good looks, talent and popularity or a son who has just entered the ministry. They assail us with justified pride about the husband who has been made vice president of his firm, been elected to the board of governors and been voted Father of the Year. Meanwhile, the wife is taking two university courses toward her BA, working full time and still continues to head up a list of committees as long as your Christmas stocking. Now, I'm proud of my family, too, and this year I suggested to the boys and my husband, that in place of our usual card, we send out a Christmas newsletter. They all looked blank, "You know what I mean," I coached them. "You could each write a few lines about what you've done this past year," "Like what?" they asked, "Well, for heaven's sake, you must have done something." Silence. "Good, Grief, surely you ac- complished some kind of achievement in the past year," I implored. "Oh yeah," said elder son brightly, "I passed my driver's test. "And I passed my eye examination," piped little brother, "You're catching on, " I en- couraged them, "but perhaps you could try to think of something a little more exciting." The littlest guy's face lit up. "We could tell them about the neat time Dad and me spun the car around twice before it landed up in the ditch and we had to get a tow truck to pull usout.Boy,that was exciting." "Don't think our friends would be interested in that," interjected Father. "Well, what about the time Mom went through the stop light and the police siren . ." "Forget it," I hissed back as I kicked him under the table. (Even his dad hadn't heard about that one, yet.) "Come on," I pleaded"Think. This is no time for modesty. Spill out all your awards, promotions, prize winnings . . . anything at all that you're proud of." "OK," said the youngest, "I quit biting my fingernails and I scored at volleyball practice the other day, "And I'm among the top players at the pool hall," boasted his older brother. I reached for the Christmas cards and just signed our names. No need to make friends jealous of all our accomplishments. Work in enough Easy to make Christmas angels Every woman likes to be creative . . . especially at this season. But if the days have galloped by you and you haven't found the time to make some of the more difficult decorations, here's an idea that's simple to make, pretty to look at and best of all, requires items that can be acquired readily. Tall, stately, serene and the very essence of the Christmas spirit are graceful angels for table, buffet or mantle. They are made with aluminum foil, yarn, foam balls, some scraps of felt, a tall, tapered bottle, a small drinking glass and a cereal dish. 'Start with the tapered bottle. Cover it completely with foil, smoothing the foil against •the sides of the bottle. Punch a hole in the foam ball and cover it with foil. Cut eye and mouth shapes from felt, and glue to the foil- covered ball, This is the angel head. Next glue strands of yarn (red is nice) to the top of the head to make hair. A piece of foil about six inches long can be crushed into a circle for the halo, This can be pinned to the balk of the head. Place the cereal bowl on top of the glass and cover both with foil, Set the bottle into the bowl. Place a number of real or artificial holly leaves around the base of the bottle for added color. Candleholders can be plastic foam balls with bottoms sliced off so they will stand, Place thin dark green candles in the holders. Three of these angels make an effective Christmas decoration which says "happy holidays." pa* Hearty greetings are sent your way for the Merriest Christmas!
