While the Exeter Hawks were
resting in third place in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" western grouping,
they have three games in hand on
the league leading Clinton
Mustangs and are actually in
strong contention for the loop
lead.
Clinton now has a total of 19
points, Belmont is in second spot
with 16 and the Hawks are third
with 15 points, but have played
three less games than the Clinton
club.
The Hawks gained an even split
this week picking up three points
of a possible half dozen.
In Lambeth, Wednesday, the
Hawks outscored the Flyers 6-3,
Friday night on home ice they
dropped a 6-3 decision to the
Belmont Sunsets and Sunday
afternoon at the Exeter arena,
the Hawks and Lucan Irish
played to a 4-4 tie.
The Hawks play two games
over the weekend and then get a
good rest for the holidays. They
play host to the Mitchell Hawks
Friday night at 8:30 at the Exeter
arena and travel to Lucan Sun-
day afternoon for a return
engagement with the Irish Six.
Well played contest
Sunday afternoon's tie contest
with the Irish was one of the best
played of the season with both
clubs sticking to hockey. Only
nine penalties were called, all
minors. The Hawks were
assessed five.
The scoring was well spread
around with four different
players on both clubs sharing in
the successful shooting.
Each team counted once in
the first period. Bob Evans
opened the scoring for the Irish at
10.57 on a pass from TomHodgins
and Shane McKinnon squared
the count a little less than five
minutes later converting a pass
from Brian Campbell into a goal.
Scoring came quickly in the
second period. Lucan forced
ahead first with a two goal spurt.
Jeff Craig counted at 2.09 and
captain Jim Hearn was on the
scoreboard in little more than a
minute. The assist was credited
to Dan Calcott.
Suddenly, it was the Hawks
turn to shine. In less than three
minutes the score was all even
again at 3-3, Perry Stover not-
ched the first counter on a pass
from Shane McKinnon and Steve
Murley registered on a three-way
effort with line-mates Larry
Haugh and Ron Lindenfield,
With only three minutes to go in
the middle stanza, the Exeter
club took the lead for the first
time when Brian Campbell put
the puck behind Bruce Maslem in
the Lucan cage on a play started
by Bob Parsons.
Time was running out in the
second period when Jim
Macklem knotted the score on a
play originated by Dave
Revington and Jim Hearn.
Little scoring power
Although the Hawks scored two
quick goals Friday night, they
were unable to sustain much of
an attack and fell to Belmont by a
6-3 score.
The game was only a minute
and forty-five seconds old when
Brian Bestard blinked the red
light on passes from Pete
Kleinstiver and Perry Stover.
At 8.34, Ron Lindenfield scored
on a pass from captain Larry
Haugh to give Hawks a two goal.
margin.
Before the period ended, Dave
Gauthier deposited the puck
behind Exeter goalie John
Hayter.
In the second period, the
Sunsets were able to score three
times without a reply from the
Hawks. Getting the go-ahead
goals were Bob Summers, Ken
Grayson and Gauthier.
Pete Gill fired the final Exeter
goal in the third period while
John Willsey and Doug Hepburn
were the Belmont goal getters.
Three of the Belmont goals
came with a member of the
Exeter team resting in the
penalty box.

A close
race
Hockey fans in the district are in for an exciting
season of junior hockey if the first part of the Ontario
Hockey Association Junior "D" western grouping is any
indication of what is to follow.
As this is being written only six points separate
the first six teams in the league, To add to this, three of
the teams have played three games less than the leading
Clinton Colts. A couple of wins for these teams will
certainly tighten things up considerably.
While Clinton leads the league with 19 points
mainly because they have played more games, the Exeter
Hawks and Belmont Sunsets are in good position as far
as the all important loss column is concerned with only
five defeats each while Clinton has lost six times.
Belmont is actually in second spot with 16 points
while the Hawks and the Lucan Irish are deadlocked for
third place with 15 points apiece. Lambeth and Mitchell
are next in line with 13 points each.
The Hawks, Lambeth and Mitchell each have
three games in hand on the leading Clinton club which
means a possible additional six points for each of these
teams.
This is probably the best balanced the district
league has been in many years. Any of the clubs with
the possible exception of Tavistock can rise to the
occasion and down any other on any given night.
This was demonstrated clearly Sunday night when
the Mitchell Hawks downed Clinton by a score of 6-4.
Sunday afternoon's Exeter Hawks game at the
local arena with the Lucan Irish supplying the
opposition was one of the best seen here this season and
augers well for the friendly rivaly between the area clubs
for the balance of the year.
The feature of the free skating contest was the
lack of penalties as both clubs stayed strictly to the
business at hand, that of trying to put the puck into the
opposition net.
The entire contest produced only nine penalties,
all of the minor variety.
This is the type of hockey that will bring the fans
to the arena. We know all clubs in the league are capable
of producing this type of hockey and hope this recent
trend will continue for the next couple of months.
Get the liniment
The Exeter Kinsmen club have announced they
will sponsor a marathon "skate-a-thon" at the Exeter
arena from noon on Wednesday, December 29 to the
same time the following day.
This means skaters of any age may skate anytime
during this period and will be checked in and out by Kin
officials. Skaters will be expected to get pledges for each
hour they skate.
Skate-a-thon director Gernot Dauber told us the
club will be happy to have entrants for only a few hours
if any one of readers is afraid they might not last the
full twenty-four hours.
Our skates have been in the basement for more
than several years, but they will come out .for a couple
of hours at least. Dauber has promised to remove the
rust from the blades and provide a bottle of liniment for
any aches and pains that could crop up.
Reeve Derry Boyle has promised to skate for
awhile so we will try and match the good Reeve stride
for stride.
Sponsor forms for the skate-a-thon may be
obtained from any Kinsmen member or the following
places of business — Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of
Montreal and McKnig-ht's Men's Wear.
Big tourney
The Exeter Minor HoCkey Association is again
sponsoring a mite hockey tournament during the
Christmas holidays and it is expected to be bigger and
better than ever.
The tournament has been extended to two days
and will be held on Sunday and Monday, December 26
and 27.
The tourney will be split into two divisions, "A"
and "B" and will give a total of sixteen teams an
opportunity to participate.
A regular defenceman
District hockey fans may be interested to know
Joe O'Rourke now playing in the Ontario Hockey
Association southern Junior "A" league with the
Chatham. Maroons is seeing plenty of action.
One of the stalwarts on defence for the Exeter
Hawks as they reached the OHA "D" finals last year,
Joe is taking a regular turn on the Chatham defence.
In the last week or two we have had the pleasure
of listening to parts of four or five of the Maroon games
on a Chatham radio station and hear the Mt. Cannel
area native's name mentioned quite often.
Another regular on the Chatham defence is Steve
English. who played all of his minor hockey in Lucan.
With four individual champions
leading the way, South Huron.

nament staged at South Huron

Jerome's of Kitchener placed
third with 81 points Waterloo
