Medway wins
first crown
Middlesex Conference football
title by defeating the Strathroy
Saints 15-14 at J. W. Little
Memorial Stadium Thursday
November 4.
When Strathroy took the. lead
14-0 it looked as if they Would
upset the undefeated Cowboys
for the second consecutive year.
However, just after Medway
recovered a Strathroy fumble,
quarterback Bill Wilson hit
running back Owen Gidley on a
swing pass for a 25 yard touch-
down to end the scoring in the
first half. Gidley got the game's
only other touchdown on a one
yard dive in the fourth quarter.
Regulation time ended with the
score tied 14-14, Two exciting but
scorless overtime periods
followed. Finally in the third
overtime Medway's Bill Wilson
punted 26 yards for a single point,

girls was held in Church parlours
last week with 18 girls and three
leaders present to host the
lingerie party scheduled for the
evening.
The party was disappointing
not only to the girls but to the
McLaughlin family in charge of
display. It appeared that
parental disinterest and bad
weather was the major factor for
this disappointment.
A scavenger hunt was
organized for the girls.
Next meeting is November 16.

SID DALEY
On November 11 comrades of
Branch 540 journeyed to Granton
for further remembrance ob-
servances. The services at
Granton have a very interesting
background. Several years ago
the Comrades of Branch 540
heard of a Silver Cross Mother of
Granton, who each November 11
proceeded to the Granton
cenotaph - alone - and observed a
two minute silent tribute to her
son 'killed in action.'
Now, for the past seven years,
each November 11 the comrades
of Branch 540 attend at the
Granton cenotaph and maintain a
silent vigil along with the Silver
Cross Mother - who didn't
forget.
Tuesday night mixed sports
opened with a bang November 9
which saw 14 couples in action.
Sports Officer Gord Elson sure
had things laid on and a most
enjoyable evening was had by all.
Comrades take advantage of
your Membership - enjoy it -
Branch 540 is where all the action
is. Tuesday mixed sports is held
every second Tuesday - next
battle of the champs will be
Tuesday November 23. See you
there - sure wish we could get
some competition in Crib, ahem.
As you may know, Branch 540's
building fund has started, ad-
mittedly it's not very large as yet
- but 540's comrades are op-
timistic and have a couple of
projects under way which should
boost the coffers.
Ways and means chairman
Ross Needham has a dance laid
on for Saturday, December 4 -
Come on over and dance to the
'London Duo.' Everyone
welcome. Another project is the
draw December 18 on a $300.00
Cellarette - get your tickets from
Smilin Carl or comrade Harvey
Hillman. Total proceeds from
both projects are to boost our
building fund, How about it
Comrades? Get behind good old
540 and put these projects 'over
the top.'
540's own comrade Bill Smith,
Zone A5 Commander advises he
will convene a zone meeting at
the Strathroy Branch of the
Royal Canadian Legion at 8.30
p.m. Friday, November 26. Let us
all surprise Comrade Bill with a
good attendance and show him
that 540 supports him all the way.
A Peek Into The Future - What
are you doing New Years Eve - 71
- Here's the flash branch 540 will
again host a New Years Eve Ball
- and in all fairness to its mem-
bership ticket sales will be
restricted to members only - up
until December 11.
After December 11 the re-
maining tickets will go on sale to
the general public on a first come
- first served basis. As policy -
there will be NO 'hold me a
couple 'til Tuesday' bit -
you want tickets - you pick them
up. The committee are not trying
to drive a hard bargain - they just
want to be fair with everyone.
Interested!! For tickets see
Smilin' Carl in the Sea Land and
Air Lounge,
Comrades our 'early bird'
campaign is progressing
favourably, 25 percent of our
membership have something to
crow about. How about you,

Saturday November 20 sees the

for 170.1'00t0.
When passing over Regina they
were told they would arrive in
Sea Land and Air Lounge - come
early - stay late and enjoy
yourself. Smilin' Carl our Newfie
Steward says he has no respect
for age - unless its bottled.
And that's 30 for this week -
remember - in the old days, men
rode chargers - now they marry
them.
Toronto in an hour and a half and
were served supper.
Mr, Revington said they heard
a bang and the plane cut down on
motor speed, Inquiry was made
of a stewardess and she went to
investigate, returning to tell
them every thipg was all right but
they would be making an
emergency landing at Down-
sview to refuel because of an
accident at Melton.
After flying and circling for a
couple of hours they finally
landed to refuel and were then
told they had been hi jacked by a
man with gun and dynamite and
they were in Montana,
Afterwards they realized this
was where the ransom money
was picked up. They started to
return to Regina only to have the
hi-jacker change his mind and
returned to Montana to disem-
bark passengers, who were
bussed into Great Falls city
airport,
They were interviewed but told
to be cautious as the plane crew
were still being held as hostages
and were in danger. They were
picked up at 3 a.m. by a relief
plane and landed in Toronto at
7:30 a.m.
. Mr. Revington said the
stewardess and crew were to be
commended on their coolness,
There was no panic among either
crew or passengers, even the
children kept their cool.
When asked what his thoughts
were he said he often wondered
the same questions in reading of
other instances but there was just
nothing to do or say but sit and
hope for the hest., He said it was
very tense night and he had no.
wish to repeat such a journey
again.
The passengers did not Own
until one hour after take off that
the crew and plane were safe and
that the hijacker had been over
powered in Calgary,
Prayer should never be taken

the only way a lot of us get
