Several farmers in this part of
Western Ontario are taking
advantage of a new type of
machinery available to install
farm drainage tile.
During the past week, Ralph
Bettridge Farm Drainage of St.
Marys ha; installed a large
amount of plastic tile on the
Kippen area farms of Ross
Corbett and Keith. Lovell.
Using equipment purchased
less than three months ago, the
St. Marys firm uses a boring type
machine drawn by a large
caterpillar with laser beam at-
tachments.
Doing away with the con-
ventional excavation, the new
machinery drills the plastic tile
into the land with very little
disturbance of the top soil
The laser beam is used to
maintain an even level of in-
stallation and the machine can be
moved, along at a good speed
without stopping to adjust levels.
With the ditches for the tile not
actually being dug up, one
menace of most farms, uprooted
stones do not appear.
Keith Lovell said he was very
pleased with the tile installation,
especially the lack of stones.
The machine moves at a good
speed and installed 23,000 feet of
tile on the Corbett farm in six
hours,
Mr. Bettridge, owner of the
machine said in addition to the
speed of installing the cost is also
less than conventional draining
operations.

NEW DRAINAGE TECHNIQUES -- A new system for installing drainage tile is being introduced to
Ontario farms. The machine shown above, operating on the Keith Lovell farm at Kippen is capable of
laying 4,000 feet of plastic tile per hour without uprooting stones and disturbing much top soil. The
machinery that sets levels by way of a laser beam is owned by Ralph Bettridge Drainage of St. Marys.

F of A annual meeting
to consider industry state
rebate on their property taxes.
Last year farmers got about $15
million. This year about $16
million,
Now the Ontario government
has proposed to scrap the whole
rebate system. Instead it intends
to introduce a tax credit scheme.
Under this program a farmer
would apply for tax credits on
both property and sales tax
when he completes his income

it doesn't really answer the

Farmers from across Ontario
will gather in Hamilton in two
weeks time to consider the state
of their industry. They'll discuss
the problems facing farmers, and
then develop recommendations
for their solution.
The farmers will be attending
the annual convention of the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture to be held at the
Sheraton Connaught Hotel in
Hamilton on Monday, November
22 through Wednesday,
November 24.
One of the big issues on their
agenda will be taxation, property
taxation in particular.
Last year members of the
Federation withheld the
education portion of their
property taxes to protest what
they considered to be an unfair
method of financing education.
They wanted the provincial
government to pick up the whole
tab for education, raising the
funds on the fair ability-to-pay
basis.
As a result of the protest, the
Ontario government introduced a
rebate to farmers. Farmers with
11 acres or more, or sales of more
than $2,000 received a 25 percent

On November 13, the delegates
will come to Toronto for the
second half of the Conference,
where they will see the Toronto
Maple Leafs in action. A tour of
Niagara Falls, the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair, and the
Ontario Science Centre are also
on the agenda. Mayor William
Dennison will attend a banquet
Saturday evening.
On the last evening of the
Conference, the delegates, under
the leadership of the President of
the Canadian Council on 4-H
clubs, Walter V. Grant, will host
a reception for the Canadian
Council directors and friends of 4-
H. A banquet that evening will
close the Conference,
The club conference is
organized and sponsored by the
Canadian Council on 4-H clubs,
the secretary of State Depart-
