The South Huron junior Pan-
thers will be in action this af-
ternoon, Wednesday in the.
Huron-Perth Conference football
final in an attempt to bring the
championship to the school for
the third consecutive year,
The Goderich Vikings will be
providing the opposition to the
Panthers this afternoon, The
game goes on the South Huron
high school field at two o'clock.
Doug Ellison's Panthers are
going after their 27th straight
win, They are undefeated in three
seasons.
The senior Panthers at South
Huron District High School made
a valiant effort to also gain the
Conference final but lost Friday
afternoon to Stratford Central by
only three points.
came into the game late in the
second and fourth quarters,
Stover hit Pius Deitrich with a
pass good for 23 yards,
In plays from scrimmage, the
Panthers ran 63 play's as com-
pared to 51 by their opposition
from Stratford.
Despite disappointment in the
loss to Stratford, coach Ron
Bogart said he is already looking
forward to next year.
Bogart added, "We could have
17 players back again this year
and this should give us the
nucleus of a good team, We had a
good year, We lost only three
games, one of those was to
Strathroy in exhibition play and
the other in addition to the semi-
final was to the tough Goderich
club by a score of 15-2 in a game
we could have quite easily won,"
Miss good chances.

Central by a 7.4 score, the senior

Panthers missed .a lot of good
scoring opportunities.
In the fourth and final quarter,
trailing 7.2, the Panthers had the
ball on the Stratford 15 yard line
on two occasions but in each
instance lost ground on two plays.
It was the fine kicking ,of Peter
Kleinstiver that kept the Pan-
thers in contention right to the
final whistle.
Kleinstiver accounted for all
South Huron points with four
single points, two coming on long
kicks of 50 and 60 yards.
His longest kick of the day
came in the last period when
kicking from his own end zone he
lofted the ball high into the wind
and with a good bounce it went
into the Stratford end zone.
From the line of scrimmage to
where the ball was retrieved by a
Stratford player was a distance
of 107 yards.
The first half score was 2-0 for
South Huron on two of Klein-
stiver's single points.
Late in the third quarter after
being held on two other chances
from in close, Stratford scored on
a one yard pass play and the
convert was good to make the
score 7-2.
The Panthers kept the play in
the Stratford end for most of the
final quarter but were unable to
get much of an offence going.
The total yardage gain for the
Panthers in the entire game was
only 152 yards, with 129 yards
coming along the ground.
Larry Bourne was the top
ground gainer with 74 yards
picked up in nine carries, Dave
Cyr was next in line with 48 yards
in 13 tries at the line.
The only South Huron pass
completed was from junior
quarterback, Perry Stover who
Exeter Arena
This area can certainly be proud of the parks and
recreation area that we have so close at hand.
We are referring to Exeter's Riverview Park and
the Morrison Dam area, just a mile east in Usborne
township.
Every year many visitors to town comment on
the beauty of the surroundings at Riverview Park. They
certainly match or surpass any park or recreation area in
a similar sized community.
Thanks to the co-operation of a. lot of people the
beauty of the park continues to grow each year. The
RAP committee that governs all recreation, arena and
park activities in Exeter is responsible for the upkeep of
the park and is doing a tremendous job.
In addition, the Ausable River Conservation
Authority has been stabilizing the banks of the Ausable
River through the park and this also adds to the beauty.
East of the main park and picnic area, the Exeter
Lions club has been doing a lot of work in cleaning up
the banks and adjoining ground for additional park and
picnic area.
If present plans are successful, visitors to
Riverview Park may see a couple of white swans
swimming around.
Recreation director Alvin Willert who was
instrumental in getting a goodly number of ducks and
geese for Morrison Dam is trying to get a pair of swans.
This would add a lot to the already fine facilities.
The cost of a pair of swans is in the neighbourhood of
$200. If anyone is interested in helping in financing this
venture Willert would be glad to hear from you.
Thanks to Willert and a large group of
enthusiastic sportsmen in the area, the ducks and geese
were placed at Morrison last spring. At that time more
than $175 was raised to finance the project.
While the goose population growth at Morrison
was fairly slow, the ducks multiplied very well.
Five adult geese were originally brought to the
site in the spring and only a few weeks ago, a total of
eight were taken to the Arnold Desjardine game
sanctuary at Grand Bend for the winter.
Willert estimates .that the duck population has
grown by at least fifty.
While wild ducks along with the ones raised at
Morrison this summer are flying in and out, Willert was
able to catch a goodly number this week and they are
being pinioned and will be taken to the Frank Hicks
farm at Centralia for the winter.
Flocks of more than one hundred have been seen
on any given night this fall. Willert has been providing a
feeding area for the visitors.
Four nesting floats, obtained from the
Department of Lands and Forests will be placed in the
lake at Morrison next spring to aid in the hatching of
more ducks and geese.
Next spring Willert hopes to keep some of the
ducks at his home for a while until they lay eggs and he
can have them hatched by incubator.
In this year's experiment he found that of 13
duck eggs hatched at home, the same number survived,
while hatching at the Dam only three ducks survived
from ten eggs.

Full classes
While minor hockey and figure skating activities
get more publicity, there are other recreational
programs in town that are gaining a lot of popularity.
A visit to the South Huron District High School
gyms each Saturday morning will prove this.
The ballet classes started by Debi Wooden two
years ago now have 50 young aspirants while a
gymnastics program for youngsters has drawn 49
members. Susan Wooden is the gymnastics instructor.
For the youth and adults wishing to get a bit of
exercise and flex their muscles, a badminton club has
been organized.
At the moment, thirty-five district men and ladies
are playing badminton at South Huron each Monday
and Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
Anyone interested will be more than welcome to
join in with the badminton activities. A newcomer to
town, Mike Ball is in charge.
Hensall, CCAT
win in hockey
Two games were played in the
district intermediate hockey
league over the past week,
Wednesday night at the Hensall
arena, the Hensall Cascadians
edged Huron Park 5-4 while the
following night, Centralia College
downed Dashwoocl 4-1.
Two goals by Bob Carlisle
paced the Hensall scoring attack
in the win over Huron Park.
Carlisle notched the final two
goals of the game to give his club
the margin of variety. He scored
from Ken Smale and Mel Wurm
with only 30 seconds left in the
second period and took a pass
from Charlie Schwalm to score
late in the third period`
Hensall scored the only goal of
the first period with Gary Kyle
firing the successful shot on a
pass from Craig Chapman.
Bill Chipchase and Chapman
scored for Hensall in the middle
frame along with Carlisle to go
four goals up.
Huron Park were held off the
score sheet until the 12.05 mark of
the third period, but when they
started fired three goals in only
20 seconds.
Dale Skinner netted the first on
a threeway effort with Terry
Millman and Bob Lammie. Bob
Pinter scored the next two, one
unassisted and the other with
help from Rick Funston.
Each team was assessed six
penalties. Murray Bell of Hensall
received a match penalty for
charging the referee.
Score early
Centralia College scored three
times in the first period as they
downed Dashwood 4-1, Thursday.
Defenceman Bruce Corrigan
with a two goal performance was
best for Centralia. Adding single
scores were Doug Harding and
Bob Bowman.
The lone Dashwood goal was
registered by Randy Becker with
John Becker and Richard
Grenier assisting.
After losing their first start in
the Ontario Hockey Association
Western Junior "D" schedule
more than two weeks ago, the
Exeter Hawks got back on
winning ways during the past
week.
Wednesday night in Lucan, the
Hawks downed the Lucan Irish 6-
3 and Friday night on home ice,
they blanked the Tavistock
Braves by a 4-0 count.
The Hawks are in Lambeth
tonight, Wednesday for a game
with the Flyers and will be home
Friday night to the Belmont
Sunsets.

Ausable loop
gets started
The Ausable Valley rec hockey
league got underway at the
Exeter arena Sunday night with
a couple of close contests.
Ailsa Craig downed Lieury by a
score of 5-2 while last year's
champion Shipka Bulldogs were
held to a 4-4 draw by Brinsley.
Dave Collins and Jim Shipway
each scored two goals to pace the
Ailsa Craig scoring attack. The
odd goal was added by Larry
Dobson.
Scoring in single fashion for
Lieury were Paul Glavin and
John Butterfield.
Philip Conlin's two goal per-
formance was best for Brinsley in
the 4-4 deadlock with Shipka.
Jack Conlin and Jim Thompson
each netted one goal to complete
the Brinsley scoring.
Barry Clarke's goal with only
27 seconds remaining in the game
gave Shipka the tie, Other Shipka
goals were fired by Ken Lovie,
Randy Becker and Rene
Boogemans, '

red light on a pass provided by
captain Larry Haugh at 16.33.
Before the first period was
completed, Pete Glover shot the
hawks into a three goal lead with
an unassisted score.
The Irish came out quickly in
the second period and it looked as
if they might be back in con-
tention.
Jim Hearn registered at 1.51
with Dennis Carty providing
passing assistance, Only 45
seconds later, the Lucan deficit
was only a single goal as Pete
lvlcGuiness converted a pass
from Ron Funston into a score.
Near the eight minute mark,
the Exeter lead was back to two
goals with Brian Bestard taking a
pass from Robbie Lindenfield
and firing the puck into the Lucan
net.
Again in the third period, the
Irish were quick to get on the
scoreboard. This time it was Bob
Evans beating John Hayter in the
Exeter nets after picking up a
pass from Dennis Carty.
Steve Murley completed his hat
trick for the night just past the
three minute mark with Pete
Clover getting credit for an
assist.
The final goal of the game was
fired by Glover with less than
eight minutes to go. It was his
second of the game and again
unassisted.
The Irish were ahead in the
penalty parade with 16 assessed
against them while the Hawks
were penalized on only 11 oc-
casions.
Hawk netminder John Hayter
turned in a good steady per-
formance Friday night as he
chalked up his first shut-out of the
season.
Hay ter was called on to hold
the fort on many occasions as his
mates visited the penalty box 19
limes while only eight visiting
players were assessed penalties.
The only scoring of the first
period came when Peter
Kleinstiver scored on an
unassisted effort near the twelve
minute mark.
In the second period, a three-
way passing play was responsible
for the second Exeter goal of the
night. Steve Murley was on the
firing end with line-mates Ron
Lindenfield and Larry Haugh
providing the assists,
The balance of the scoring for
the Exeter club was taken care
of by Brian Campbell. He took a
pass from Bob Rowe before the
first minute had elapsed in the
third period and deposited the
puck in the Tavistock nets.
Less than seven minutes later,
Campbell was back with his
second successful shot, this time
the pass was provided by Shane
McKinnon.

Olden times
- Over the weekend we came across a part of .a
copy of the London Free Press dated April 5, 1939 that
had been wrapped around an old Hallowe'en costume.
Fortunately for us it contained the sports and
comic sections. Several items on the sports pages are
interesting.
One article on that year's Stanley Cup final which
was about to start between the Boston Bruins and
Toronto Maple Leafs had officials of the two teams
bickering.
Conn Smythe of the Leafs complained that the
Bruin sticks were too long and Art Ross had them
chopped down to the 53 inch liMit. Ross countered
with a demand that the width of the Leaf sticks and the
width of the goaler pads be checked.
In Allan Cup semi-finals, the Montreal Royals
dealt Toronto their first loss in 32 league and playoff
games. Members of the Toronto club which went on to
make the NHL Leafs were Don Metz, Hank Goldup and
Peanuts O'Flaherty, Buddy O'Connor was on the
Montreal roster.
At that time, the major league baseball exhibition
season had started. The Detroit Tigers lost 5-3 to the
Brooklyn Dodgers. Pitching for Detroit were Schoolboy
Rowe and George Eisenstat while Rudy York and Birdie
Tebbetts were the catchers, •
Old-time baseball buffs will remember some of
the other pitchers listed in games played on April 4,
1939.
They include Paul "Daffy" Dean, Cy Blanton, Al
Muncrief, Monte Pearson and Bucky Walters, Among
the catchers were Bill Dickey, Rollie Hemsley, Mickey
Owen and Ray Hayworth,
